Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
I am just about to get an ipad2, what do you recommend as the best software to use for recording on them?
Cheers man, I should really get a baby quasar again or a quasar deluxe since I can see where it would go if I dropped the Chili boost off the board and move the noise box to it's place. I've got another picture with this all wired up and my Kimbara wah, I should really send it you to try it so cool probably not your thing due to the subtley well that and that fact the switch is near knackered on it. I just need to find a way to directly upload my recordings from the Ipad onto the web and then I'll get into full on soundclip mode again.
-
DR Neon strings. Anyone tried them?
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
Can anyone advise a good supplier in the States for all brands of strings and not just DR's? I normally use Elixir's. Cheers -

Very, very nice - would match my fretted '77 perfectly!!
1980 Stingray fretless with factory ebony board. All original, including teardop case. I'm the second owner, and it's in very nice shape for a 30 year old bass...
-
Ha ha ha!!!! Love it.
Also, on a side note:
Wow that looks the business. Any idea yet on the pricing for such a beast!
Absolutely. Here are pics of the face: As you can see, it has the Pro Series interface that allows for up to 6 saveable presets. In terms of sound, what will really knock your pants off is the LFO sequencer settings. You can see all of the available wave shapes on the right side of the graphic EQ. Some of these settings create a sequencer-like sound in the overtones of your playing. So, as you hold down a low G, for example, you can hear it arpeggiating in the harmonics of the note. To help nail down the proper tempo for the LFO settings, we've given you the option of converting the right-most footswitch to a tap-tempo switch. There is quite a bit more to it than that. That list that you see on in between the footswitches is a quick guide to all of the selectable functions for an expression pedal. We can get deeper into that and some other features if people are interested.
Not true! I use some for more synthy based sounds and some for down right funk. To achieve these you need the filters set differently and in particular the sweep up or down and re-setting that all the time on just one pedal would be a big pain in the arse!
You need one tasteful filter sound. Bin the rest. I may be biased though as I don't like filters, or indeed most modulation pedals.
-
Can you give a sneaky preview of what will be in it? The main reason that I did not buy a BEF in the end was because you cannot save different sounds and without that it just can't replace my other filters.
We expect the BEF Pro to be available in Europe in late summer or early fall. There is QUITE a lot going in the pedal, so please feel free to send any questions about it my way! Working on the demo clips/videos of it right now! Will
Fair point but Queen managed that 16 years into their career and I am not sure the same could be said of Blur or Oasis? I think the longevity of Queen has shocked most people in the music business. Watching the footage of them flying into Wembley in their own Kind of Magic branded helicopters always brings a smile to my face. Can any of us imagine just for a second what a sense of achievement that must be to look down at 80,000 people who have piled into a stadium to hear you perform songs that you have written it must blow your mind!! The annoying thing is that for most of us that might turn into the biggest ego-tistical asshole in the world but listen to Brian and Roger they are the most down to earth guys you could ever meet!
Not that it's a competition or anything but Oasis and Blur, maybe even Radiohead could sell out Wembley. Oasis sold out Knebworth quite a few times over at the height of their careers. The other two aren't as likely to play stadium gigs, although Blur have sold out Hyde Park before for example. That's 65,000 people.
-
Looking at the list of bands below - I rest my case! I wouldn't put any of them in the same league as Queen. Don't ever recall The Smiths selling out Wembley!!
The Smiths, The Cult, Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Nazareth, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, the Kinks, Free, Yes, the Clash, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Robin Trower, AC/DC(though the BBC like to pretend they don't really exist!), New Order, Buzzcocks and Depeche Mode.
-
To be fair to the Beeb this had plenty of bits and pieces that were new and unseen and I have seen them all! Trouble is there are very few bands about since those that you mention that you could make a documentary about - apart from Metallica of course.
Good show last night, though hardly different from every other BBC documentary focusing on Queen/Freddie Mercury/Live Aid/rock music in general. I think at 25 I can do without seeing another BBC 'rock' documentary focusing on any one of: Live Aid, Queen, Led Zep, the Who, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Rolling Stones or anything involving Eric Clapton. Its not that I'm not a fan, its just that I am fed up of the BBC essentially making the same documentaries over and over, when they could just repeat the one they made before. Its not like they are going to get any new information, or that the subject matter is focusing on anything new, (the Paul Rogers/Queen thing was pretty much glossed over entirely).
Agree - I don't think I have ever heard John Deacon talk much about his bass playing and would love to know more about it. He is a great player and I particularly enjoyed watching his sunburst Stingray on the Another One Bites The Dust clip! I don't think he plays at all these days.
Really enjoying watching these on iplayer, thanks for the heads up bassace. A shame John Deacon is quite so reclusive, I'd love to hear him talk about his approach to bass playing. But I suppose the documentary was more about the biog than the music anyway! I wonder if he ever plays for fun these days, I can't imagine walking away from it so completely.
I doubt that Deacon, Taylor and May really needed the money! It was interesting to see that they did not make any money at all off the first three albums because of a bad record deal.
Money/Finance/Business. At the end of the day the brand name 'Queen' was still very financially viable. And of course it all led to the stage show 'We will Rock you' which is a huge world wide hit, which in turn still helps shift shed loads of Queen albums. Weather or not that was their intention, or being urged by their record company - who knows? But it sure worked. A very good viewing i thought. Garry
-
Yeah that was kind of my point - Deacon went out with style at the top of his game. Queen without Mercury is like a car without an engine IMHO!!
Brian May commented that once you've experienced the 'rockstar thing' it's hard to give it up, though Deacon obviously didn't feel the same way. I tend to agree about the Queen name though; Mercury was such a dominant part of the band that it really can't be Queen without him. Still, tribute bands are quite popular these days.
Watched them and loved them both - I have loved Queen since my brother lent me their Greatest Hits vinyl album when I was 10! Of course at that age I did not understand a lot of Freddie's image and what it meant!! I still love their music as much today as I always did although do not listen to it as much as I used to years ago. I found the last 15 mins very sad and brought a tear to my eye. In some ways it is fitting that Freddie died the way he did, I could never have seen him still pumping out mediocre rock ballads in his 50's or 60's simply not his style. I think that John Deacon had the right idea and bowed out after the Freddie tribute gig I never understood why Brian and Roger tried to carry on with the name Queen what was the point?
Anybody see them? The last 15 mins were very moving - an excellent documentary about a great band and much loved charismatic singer.
Who are the heavy discounters in the states and will they ship to the UK?
Two quick points from me: I've used a TC RH head purchased in the US and it was absolutely fine over here, no problems with power whatsoever. Prices on RH450's are way down in the States now - you can pick up a new one for $569 if you shop around. The heavy discounters don't have the RH750 yet but I'd guess they will come in closer to $800 than $1,000.
Going through exactly the same myself right now! We do have free rehearsal space which helps but that is in Bristol and so an 80 mile round trip for me to go to rehearsals and then the same again if gigs are in Bristol too. Not sure that it is worth playing gigs when effectively you are paying to play. Seems to be the perpetual problem when choosing to play originals over covers though.
As the title says; Is being in a band now so expensive that you can't afford to play live and not get paid for it? When you factor in the costs of Fuel (to gigs and to rehearsals) Food Drink Rehearsal space costs (ok, none if you can find a way to do it for free, but I've never been in a band that has!) I enjoy being in bands and playing live, I don't even care about not being paid to "work" (Ars Gratia Artis and all that), but the costs of simply keeping a band up and running are becoming ruinous if you're not getting paid. I'm finding that not (currently) being in a band is saving me about £40/£50 a week... And I do begrudge paying out the thick end of £2.5k a year for no return. Most of the outlay is in petrol costs to and from rehearsal and gigs. The rest is rehearsal cost itself. I'm assuming that this will apply primarily to originals bands, for I'd want to be paid the going rate to play anyone else's music (covers/functions etc.), and that's really not my scene at all... What say you, BassChatters?
The point here though is that when you look at the pics it is obvious that the bass has done some work, which is to be expected, but did that guy really have to bother to e-mail the seller to complain?? Some people must have more time on their hands than me!!!
If it's described as "mint" then I expect it to be "mint" - the age is irrelevant. You do get basses which have been forgotten in a shop stock room, or bought for someone who had no interest in bass then mothballed for years. Rare, but it can happen. But in short, I expect a 32 year old "mint condition" bass to be in "mint condition". I'm quite the pedant that way.
-
Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
Pedaltrain 2 with hard case = pain in the arse, Pedaltrain 2 with the soft case works really well, sling it over your shoulder and walk to the stage job done!
Yeah I have indeed considered the M9, but for it's even relatively small footprint, if it were only to replace my delay, reverb and chorus, it would take the same space on my board. The possibilities of the extra sounds in the unit though are very tempting, I could ditch most of my set up for one, that I am sure but even so my seperate stomps nag me to stay faithful. cheddatom - Yeah, I used a Korg AX3000B for years. Really, the only solution, if I want to keep my large set up is to put up with a large board or if I want to downsize a little but retain the same sounds, to buy an M9 and quit whining! I just don't really know what to do though. I'm gonna put everything on my new Pedal Train Jnr and see how much space I have to spare and then go from there. I'll probably end up getting a pedaltrain 2 or 3 as they look like more reasonable and manageable sizes than my Tourman.
-

Yeah I guess so! I mean really who expects a 32 year old bass to be in mint condition?
MB1. So basically "Mint" now means Roadworn?
-
This Stingray has just come on and looks pretty good for the money if anyone is looking for one. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123

I seem to be losing the bottom end when I slap!!

How much?
Flea uses an MXR Micro Amp to boost his signal for slapping. I could build you one if you like
-

Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
Yes - now feeling the problems with opting for the outboard pre-amp as with my jazz I have both pickups on full so no real option to adjust anything on the bass! With my Rumour for example I never have the bass boost on full so I can always increase as you suggest or flick the slap switch if needs be!! Maybe a J-Retro might be a better idea here?
Yep, switching from finger style to slap can produced a more pronounced top end and less perceived bass - I usually just reach for the bass control on my instrument and notch it up a little bit for slap then back down for fingers. The same goes for my picking technique that has an attacking tone.
-

Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
The MXR M80 looks a handy bit of kit but a little overkill for my needs I think. I used to have a Catalinbread Serrano Picosso which was a nice little boost but I sold it to Higgie when I bought the other pre-amps as I didn't think I needed it anymore - wrong!! Will check out the Silentfly and Boss GEB7 and see if they would be worth buying, will also try the suggestion of trying to play lighter with the fingers but not sure if I can do that! Also got me thinking how Flea manages live as he has a really heavy finger style but I never noticed any drop out when he changed to the thumb?
I have to use a boost for slap parts as i play quite heavily fingerstyle. I have a little signal boost box made by Silentfly but most of the time i use the MXR M80 which has a switchable preamp with a 3 band eq. Any decent boost/preamp/eq pedal should get the job done.
-

Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
Yeah you could be right - I think that I tend to have quite a heavy touch and that could be causing the problems but it is weird that I have only noticed it recently. I did change my outboard pre-amp from the Sadowsky to the Aguilar but surely that should not have made too much difference? I should get my Rumour and Stingray back soon so it will be interesting to see whether I get the same using those guys as obviously there will no pre-amp in the chain then. Like Deepbass5 says a two channel amp could really cure the problem but that would mean a new amp again and not sure that I really want to do that unless absolutely necessary. I am also in the process of moving to an In Ear Monitor system so that should also help with perceived volume and what I can actually hear when I play.
I find that a lot of perceived volume loss when it comes to switching to slap isn't due to the slap technique or effects, it could be down to your fingerstyle technique! The heavier your touch is fingerstyle, the more volume loss you perceive when you come to slap. I've found the best thing to do is to try and play a bit lighter when playing fingerstyle, and let the amp do most of the work volume-wise, so when you change to slap, if anything, there will be a boost! Of course it could also be your EQ settings, but I find the above to be the case a lot of the time.
-
Recently I find that when I move to my thumb for certain sections of our tunes I seem to lose all of the bottom end out of my sound and to my ears it sounds really empty. My EBS Multi-Comp has a gain boost on it and I am trying that to solve the problem but without much success. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what can I use to cure the problem?
