Coming from a metal, prog and grunge background, I joined a rock and roll band 5 years ago. Did 3 stints with them over 2 years, I quite enjoyed it and learned some stuff. However, the whole 12 bar thing started to annoy me after a while so I moved on.

The first bass played was a Kay bass owned by a friend of mine. You could've fitted a ham sandwich between the strings and fretboard... nearly cured me of wanting to play bass for the rest of my life. Fortunately another friend lent me an Encore Coaster which was, at least , playable...

One session a week 3-4 hours - original material. Writing and rehearsing new stuff unless we have a gig at the weekend, in which case we run through the set.

Having read that, it occurs to me that it is quite important to have more than one hobby, so you don't put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak. I guess one reason I don't get too down on the bass is because I do other things too... weights, mountain biking, surfing, a bit of classical guitar. Could that be an issue? I don't know if the OP'er has any hobbies apart from bass....

Yeah you can... get a longboard or a large mini-mal. I'm pushing 50 and I surf. 😀 I would say just have a break for a few months. Don't sell your gear. See how you feel after that... whether it is music in general, bass, bands, gigs, or whatever that is causing you to lose your passion. See which , if any, you miss and take it from there. I think many of us need to take a break once in a while. I don't know many people that keep hammering away at it and still enjoy it.

Bought a brand new Dingwall NG2 5 string. Fantastic bass, but the band I bought it for folded 2 weeks later, and I have no further use for a 5 string, and nobody locally has the money to buy it. Rookie error..

Oh hell yes!! I still listen to that album regularly 30-odd years after. Skyscraper was pretty good too, but I love the energy of Eat Em.

The Pineapple Thief's Where We Stood live cd/dvd pack. Yes, I'm one of those weirdoes that still buys CDs. 👽

For me, the novelty of Nevermind wore off pretty quick, especially after gigging 4 or 5 songs off it for a few months. Alice In Chains were probably the band of that era/genre that I liked most.

Back in the day it would have been 1 Badmotorfinger, 2 BSSM, 3 Nevermind…. but BSSM is the only one I still listen to regularly...

Have you ever discovered a band and thought Crikey, I could have written that or That dude plays like me? For some reason I had never listened to any Fates Warning until recently when I happened to be bit the worse for rum and rifling through various YouTube suggestions. I started watching a live gig from Athens and instantly liked it and found it very similar to stuff I've written over the years, and the bassist Joey Vera even looks and plays a bit like me, or indeed me like him! I've since bought a few albums. Not to be confused with 'This is the band I wished I was in', have any of you fine people discovered bands that are strangely familiar in playing style and/or material? Mmm... rum.... 😍

Amen to that... I always use the local luthier to deal with that sort of shenanigans...

True... I guess many of us are optimistic that things might have improved even though experience might tell us otherwise. As my mum says, "You can live in hope even if you die in despair." Hopefully it wasn't directed at me! 😳

I've blown out the least number of rehearsals, so yeah, I rock!! 😎

If singer dude wants to gig as much as possible, and others in the band want to do one a month, this will happen, and in all honesty, singer might jump ship altogether. Such is band life....

Bought a JM6 from a nice guy in the Netherlands. It arrived quicker than a lot of purchases I've made from here in Britain!

Well.... I'm quite happy with this album. I want to buy a cd but I'm jiggered if I'm paying for that all extra stuff.... Mind you, I'm no longer minded to analyse stuff to death - 20 years ago might have been different, but these days if I like it I listen to it.

I'm liking that! Good stuff, squire! 🙂
