yes talking definitely more awkward one gig i recall i was thrust up the front away from my usual position of lurking around at the back with the drummist, and a nice lady guest from the crowd came up and was aking for a request right in the middle of a song - i had to try and pretend that i couldnt hear what she was saying because i couldnt actually speak with any degree of intelligble coherence
I used to be a solo singer in working mens clubs for 15 years. I could write a book on things like this. Including an entertainment secretary standing at the foot of the stage while I was singing waving the plug end of a bingo machine at me, asking me to plug it in for him
Funnily enough, I find talking a lot harder than singing when playing bass. When I try to say something to my band mates, I always end up sounding like a demented ape with a speech impediment....
Think that's fairly common. Most singers would probably agree that talking to the audience is a lot harder than singing to them

Very funny.....and accurate! Thanks for posting

How about some of the old punk / new wave stuff. Any Ramones song and Sex Pistols Pretty Vacant go down well in pubs and are very easy to learn

John Entwistle isolated bass - Won't Get Fooled Again
bonzodog replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
Yes I don't think the way The Who ended up sounding was what Pete Townshend had envisaged according to some interviews My band open with won't get fooled again using a sampled keyboard intro off my phone. I don't play it anywhere near the level Entwistle does but still a great track to play -
I have to disagree with most posts. I think you should leave all the gear up until party has finished as it looks unprofessional. People may not appear to be bothered but you don't know what they are thinking. I know on this occasion it was a mates party but in general IMO the stage should be left till the night is over and reflected in the price
don't ask me it's just took me the best part of a day to figure out the Jam's In the City
That's the first song I had to learn in our Mod band. Great song for bass. I also sing the harmonies which are great to sing too

Wonder if there has ever been blind tests done where people have been given guitars to play without being able to see the make and play through amps without seeing the brand. Be interesting to see if the expensive ones were the better sounding and feeling

You can do it but the only thing I would add is the TC BC210 and BC212 are quite big cabs dimension wise for a 2 speaker cab. I've got both of them and am very happy with the sound but was surprised when I saw them in the shop next to the 410 there was not a huge difference. Best to have a look at one and compare dimensions first.

I get frustrated most of the time on here because a lot of the conversations are about gear I can only dream of. I don't blame anyone for spending a lot of money on gear. I have a young family and am the sole earner so I made my bed so to speak. I play cheap JHS vintage basses through a hartke amp and TC cabs. All of them considered to be at the budget end of the spectrum but in 20 years of playing I have had lots of compliments about my playing but no one has ever mentioned my gear.

I use a hartke LH500 with 2 TC cabs. A bc210 and a bc212. Very pleased with the sound I get but the LH500 is not to everyone's liking due it's basic Eq

In the past I would just put my hands in front of the hot spot lights for a minute or two. Can't do that with LED ones now

A rule of thumb for my covers band is 3 times a year max at same venue. LLs sometimes see you go down well and think same will happen again but the last thing you want is punters to get bored of you

I remember doing a wedding that was far away where the hotel were not happy about the band taking too long to set up and take down so they gave us strict and short time slots to do it in. We were told the times about a month before the gig. Set up at 6 o'clock, play 1 hour between 7.30 and 8.30, take down at 9 o'clock as quick as possible. After we had finished our set we hung around and then went back in at 9 o'clock to take down and were immediately met with an angry manager, asking us what we were doing taking the gear down while the disco was on. It was then we discovered when they said 9 o'clock to take down, they meant the next morning!!!. The gig was 50 miles away and there was no way we were coming back, so ended up pulling it all out onto the car park and removing leads from amps and packing it up into boxes outside.

Slightly OT but I find BV much harder than lead vox. I like to think I have a decent voice and when guitarist harmonises with me it sounds great. But when he sings lead vox and I have to harmonise I struggle to keep in tune. And it definitely me going out of tune. He has an amazing almost pitch perfect voice
-
Have you checked to make sure it is an instrument cable and not a speaker cable. I made the mistake once of picking up a speaker cable in error. Made the guitar very noisy
-
And a similar pet hate is the decline of the good old door wedge. Rarely spotted lying around pubs these days
-
I sing lead vox on half our songs and play the bass lines accordingly. When the guitarist sings lead I play the proper bass line but when I sing I tend to play mainly root notes and then maybe expand more in between the singing bits. I admire any bassist that can play complicated bass lines and sing at same time

Had an afternoon gig today. Great gig and lots of people there. Trying to get gear out of the pub though while it was still open was a nightmare. My pet hate is people who stand in doorway and you politely ask then to move while you carry gear out only for them to move back in the way again on your next trip. I must have asked a bloke tonight 10 times to move out of the way and every time he reappeared in the way!!!!

Check out the Yamaha stagepas range. They do a range of output levels and are a nice compact system with built in effects. You should get their small new one in your price range or maybe the louder version second hand. Don't forget you will need speaker stands, leads and mics too which will eat into your budget
Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) - Frank Wilson, Cmaj.
love this song but never been able to find the bass tabs anywhere

Your very own 'The biggest news story of them all'

Little green bag. And not just the famous riff at the start. The bass line to the whole song is great
