1. Maybe he was just a prat. Can't discount that option either.
2. Put another few hundred quid in and buy a new 5 string Status T-Bass perhaps?
3. Hmmm. When you jiggle the jack plug, are you touching it? If so and your touching metal casing, you're doing exactly the same as touching the strings/control plate. However, jiggling the jack by touching the actual plastic lead maks a difference it sounds like there's a loose or dry solder joint on the jackplug or that it's not fitted correctly. Might not need to shield it, even though it's a good idea.
4. Eeee. If it had been a beater of a bass I'd have been peeved but not too bothered, however the op's bass is a Sandburg, it's not a beater. It is still a tool but you're meant to look after tools to some degree, someone managing to do serious buckle damage (down to the wood? ffs) to that sort of bass when they're know it's someone else's is out of order imo. It's different when you do the damage yourself though as it's yours. I'd get a quote for the repair off a top rated luthier and demand cash upfront from the mate who damaged it. I wouldn't expect damage on any of my tools or possessions that I lend to family/friends just through sheer negligence whether it's a bass, guitar, car, garden tools, power tools, clothes etc...
5.
There is a huge difference between the Epi and the real deal, however the Epi is still cool
Which Epi? If you mean the bog standard ~£200 one that's very true (still a nice bass though). The Pro version barring the laminate neck, proper bridge and active pups/eq shares the exact same dimensions and neck through properties that the current Gibbo does. It's much closer to it and actually a completementary instrument rather than a budget version due to it's differences. It's on my GAS list. Need to sell my Friday afternoon special first. Poo.
6. I was going to post how it's really wierd to name inanimate objects when you're an adult at least. I know I don't do it with any of my possessions as far as I'm aware. However, I then realised I posted a comment in regards to this post in the Porn section which unless I'm all confused, is one of Beedster's from back in the day, a certain white precision known as Kylie. That bass has been named and it's stuck. I think it will always be Kylie to those who own it (if they're BC members and know it's history).
7. "I've been asked to source a '64 Precision.....", why the coverup at the start?
8. Personally, I'd rather have the thumbnails and have to click-for-bigger rather than have massive pictures take up all room in the thread. Especially if there's lots of pictures, and doubly so if people are having a thick moment and quote the bloody pictures. However. Upload to photobucket/flickr/imageshack/a server of choice and slap the image within a <img> tag set and you can post full size ones.
9. Did you check the sticky at the top of this section of the forum: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=8009 ? All about buying your first bass and it's VERY useful. Pretty much anything anyone can say on this thread here will either be repeating what's in the sticky or just slightly updating it with reference to newly released models. To sum up: Don't worry about makes and models too much, go to music shops and try loads in your price bracket (there will be a large number in decent stores) and find one that feels right for you. Nice points to start off trying are with Squier Jazzes and Precisions as they are benchmark instruments. Once you figure out what you like and are comfortable with (or not, some people just don't get on with Fender dimensions and designs) you can narrow it down. As an fyi, if you do find a Jazz or Precision bass to be the bass your after, the Squier Vintage Modified series and the Classic Vibe series (~£200 -> £250 new) are very highly rated on here and in pretty much any review you'll find. Extremely good for the money and better than Fender's own offerings in the form of their Mexican range (cheapest proper Fender range you can buy). But seriously, go read the sticky. That little summery I've done doesn't do the sticky justice. It's a very good read and worth a couple of minutes of your time. Also don't forget to post an little bit about yourself in the Introductions section as well
10. In otherwords Lorne is saying: "accept what you've got and be honest". Also, most punters won't know the difference anyway as long as it's still the right shaped and specced bass if that's what you are worried about.
11. Get the setup and fret level. And an extra pack of strings or two. Sorted.
12. Hmmm, "3 piece ash body". The top shot on the listing looks like a one piece, so I'd discount that. I suspect you might have to paint it as I reckon it won't be bookmatched, but still, cheap for a good preshaped ash body anyway.
13.
Here's some old sofa-porn of Kylie before I sold her *sniffle*
Is that Kylie as in Beedster's old Kylie? If so, it's nice to see it's still in the BC membership.
14. Heh, I honestly expected you to take after your brother and have a bigger collection. Very nice collection though, the only thing missing is a P-bass style
15. Sounds like a synth. Not a Stingray at any rate.
16. It won't be the pickup, but it might be the bass. Possible ground loop? Could be as others have said, the lead or amp.
17. Poptart (Mark) often posts offers in the Affliates Market place for BC'ers: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9603 Go from there, be amazed at the stock and cry when you release it's all out of your means to own it all
18. I have a VMJ. The only thing I dislike is the pups, they're very dark. However, it's a really well put together bit of kit. There not Chinese either like the Op thinks, either Indonesian or Korean (I can't remember which). And the other ones are the Classic Vibe series (not Vintage Vibe like the op says). Personally, spec wise the Classic Vibe has the edge, has a better nut and a High Mass Bridge but considering the price is pretty much the same, it's just finding one that works for you.
19. This is why Breadboards are used before you solder everything together And umph is right about breaking up the rows on strip boards, handilly, a hand held countersinking tool works brilliantly for it.
20. Damn, I thought this was going to be someone telling me Trace Elliot has upped their testing from dropping gear from cranes to full on bomb tests. I don't feel ashamed to admit that, however I do feel cheated that it isn't so.
21. Get the Pro would be my recommendation, I've yet to try one, but they're much closer to the Gibson version. Better bridge as well (although the 3 point can be replaced, Hipshot do one).
22. Don't do it. The thing with the JV's is that their value is based upon the fact they shipped with very good QC and are very playable (aka, they've got good necks), the added J pup isn't going to affect the playability of the actual bass (just the sound) whereas if you defret the JV neck you'll be doing a lot more "damage" to it. Buy a replacement. You'll probably lose less in the long run anyway as you can sell the JV as near original and you'll have a spare fretless neck to sell/use on another project should you decide to shift the bass.
23.
Rattle and Drum in Derby have this one advertised on ebay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-1964-Precisio...=item2c51d08f68
Eeek. I'd dread to think how poor the quality of that re-fin is considering they couldn't be bothered to remove the scratchplate when they were sanding it down :S 4k my arse.
24. He's got chops. Mad chops. Also, unusual pick of a song goes to "Come Sweet Death" or "Komm, Susser Tod" as he's got it (umlaut on the u btw), awesome song, but unexpected bass cover. I suspect as he's Japanese I know why he's picked the song though, rather powerful in context of the animated film it was used in.
25. Youch. From what I know the Masterbuilt ones ARE completely handmand as far as possible, I think the only things pre-made are the bridge and tuners etc. Pups are handwound if the Fender website is to be believed. Obviously built using the best cuts of wood they can find etc.. However, is it £4600 good for what is essentially a standard Jazz with a modified scratchplate and a preamp chucked in...No. Not when you consider even the most expensive individual luthiers would probably be able to put one out for £1500-£2000 methinks. The Fender name on the headstock isn't worth £2000, not as a player's bass. I think these really are collectors basses.
