How many beers had you had at the time 😂 I don't know what to say except perhaps it was indeed painted or wrapped.. maybe a Vigier employee went rogue and made one by himself 'off the books' -
Nope they never did a full carbon five string. Confirmed. Shame, but who knows what the future holds!

A great summary. I’ve heard rumours but I’ve never seen a five string series II bass in over twenty years of being a Vigier fan. I don’t think they made them.

I like 70s jazz basses because of the different rear pickup placement which gives a unique sound especially for the odd popped note. I should have news on that front and be able to show you mine soon...

I was messing about with my phone camera and was quite impressed with how close it can focus (with a combination of 2x optical zoom and some cropping). I’m pretty sure I’ve seen someone post close up pics of flats before so thought it might be fun to compare them. Was it you @wateroftyne? Anyway here are some Labella 760fx Feel free to add yours! The closer the better.

I think it's a different sort of 'bright' - more of a toppy 'glassy' attack from maple than the 'zing' a new string makes. You can even hear it with flats, perhaps more so. One of the reasons I like maple board P basses is because it helps give those octave pops a bit more snap.

I suppose the thing is that some of us have probably played tens or even hundreds of Precision basses (as an example) over the years and have found that maple is brighter on average. It would seem to bear out from peoples observations generally. As for the second part - the audience can't tell the difference - I think we all agree that we don't play bass for the audience alone and enjoy the minutiae that makes playing bass or any instrument such a passion.
