It’s nice to think a company you are personally invested in is aligned with your own values but I think any big manufacturer at this level has to be fairly ‘aggressive’ to keep a foothold. Personally I see the advantage of ‘liking’ the company or being oblivious to it. However I’ve owned basses by Ken Smith who everyone seems to hate and I’ve said before I don’t care if he’s an axe murderer if I like his basses. Mind you I met Mr. Maruszczyk and let’s say that’s out me off ever getting one!

Oh absolutely - I understand that, but it’s amazing how often people say things like ‘I sound the same whatever I play’ which often then leads to the other fave ‘the audience won’t notice what bass you play’ - but then in the next minute they’re debating the advantages of ceramic magnets!

Good to see the old ‘tone is in the fingers’ comment doing the rounds again. It’s true that varying your attack and hand position can alter the timbre of a given sound, but you simply cannot make a P bass sound like a 70s Jazz with your fingers unless you use said fingers to install pickups 😂

Just to recommend trying a good headphone setup and physical feedback device like a Backbeat, Bassboard or rumble seat. Well worth it IMO - no worrying about annoying anyone, complete isolation from any vibrations or unwanted room noise, Hifi quality monitoring and immersive when playing along with other stuff. It makes playing through an amp at home seem crazy when you get it right.

A precision or jazz copy would take just as much work, if being hand made, as something in a different shape. With many high end jazz basses the body shape is really the only similarity, and even then, it’s often shaped quite differently if you were to compare to a Fender. I’ll just add that a good high end instrument will hold its value much better than a budget or mid range one, so in the long run they can work out cheaper. I’ve probably had about five instruments for an initial outlay several years ago and if I sold them all now I’d make it back with interest.

I personally think judicious use of a comp should be essential regardless

Sounds like a limiter/comp might help. Set a high ratio and back off the threshold so that it kicks in when you dig in on the B string. Should have a natural sounding effect on the overall output whilst leaving dynamics below the threshold unaffected (depending on the comp/limiter obvs)
