Dismantling an amp - what is the circular thing?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sounds to me like its the mains transformer. A picture would help.
There's a panel with lots of electronc-y stuff and its attached by wires to something very similar to this thing -
I have to send back my faulty Acoustic Image Contra to the US for repair. This comprises a head bolted on to a speaker. I was told "you don't have to remove the whole chassis, just take the top off (with the preamp attached) and then remove the rear panel (with the power amp attached) and send us those two units." So I've unscrewed everything and the front panel is self explanatory. When the say rear panel with power amp attached, do they mean the big circular thingummy that comprises densely coiled wires in a plastic type covering? Thanks in advance from an electronics numpty
Hi, Just inquiring as to any teachers in and around West London, or anybody recommended in that area? Will have to put up with (what I consider) a beginner. Looking for proper guidance and a real grounding in the basics of bass playing and music and taking it from there upwards. Thanks all...
Try Tom Kenrick, BC user name is TKenrick http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=3018 He is based in Chiswick and is a very good teacher and pro player who will fit the bill nicely, I think
Hi Clarky, any trouble getting it give me a shout as I'm only in epsom so can drop one off or we can meet up somewhere - it'd be a choice of mag pickups tho - I'll PM you my mobile number in case you need it Bob
Very kind Bob but hopefully I will be fine. Dave/obbm's pickup arrived yesterday and I should be able to instal and test it tonight -
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis A love Supreme - Coltrane Birth of the cool -Mile Daviss Waltz for Debbie - Bill Evans trio There was a time when all I listened to was jazz (in the eatrly 90s) and those 4 albums were the top of the heap for me. A close 5th would have been Full House by Wes Montgomery.

Hey Phil, if you see Jonas Lohse of Lando Music tell him I have posted the faulty DB pickup back to him and that I am a decent guy! (no scammer )
+1. I love the first album and the trendy EP that followed (when they went to some place in Derbyshire, dressed in army fatigures; the EP had live versions of A show of strength, All that Jazz and All my Colours aka Zimbo, if i recall correctly - which I almost certainly don't) My first school band played Crocodiles, the track, and I still noodle the driving bass line to this day. Classic stuff. Oh and Porcupine was pants Edit: the EP was called Shine so hard, recorded live in Buxton, and I had the track listing a bit wrong http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_So_Hard For me this was Echo and the Bunnymen's absolute peak
Well blow me down, there's a clip from that Buxton gig on Youtube
He used to play bass for Echo & the Bunnymen?
Yeah, he's gone downhill since his fresh faced 20s (2nd from rhs)
Just seen this thread Clarky, are you sorted yet? I've several options if not.
Thanks Keith, obbm (aka Dave) has popped one in post to me today -
I put up an urgent plea for a DB pickup last night (my p/up had died and I have a gig on Saturday). Within 10 minutes three BC'ers (obbm, Beedster, Gareth Hughes) had offered me a loan of a pickup. Cool place, this

Very good band. Saw them at the Jazz Cafe a week or two back. Definitely worth catching, with some nifty bass playing from our discreet!
Do you want to borrow the Aria back?
Thanks for the offer obbm but I have the Eminence EUB as backup if all else fails. As its a big gig and image is all the band wants me to use the full McCoy double bass .... Again much appreciated! -
Hell of a coincidence? I may be driving up your way on Saturday Clarky so if things get messy let me know C
Thanks Chris, will see what happens. As an alternative has anyone tried those ultra-cheapo (£20-30) home-made looking pickups on eBay by J-tone - if these are OK it might be useful to have one as a backup in the gig bag just in case .... -
Maybe not the solution you're looking for if you're suspecting the APT-Flex caused the Contra death - but you're welcome to borrow mine. I could have it in the post tomorrow morning, guaranteed next day delivery. Leave me a PM if that's an option and I'll get it tomorrow morning - having an early night tonight. Gigs and 2 year olds don't mix.
That kind Gareth but for the sake of non-f*ck-up-ability its probably best if I use a pickup of the type that I know didn't cause a problem before, like my old Shadow. Thanks for the offer though matey! -
Mate, I have two you could borrow but am away tomorrow and Thursday. I could take one with me and post when I get there, but I'm worried it might not make it 9I won;t be able to post until Thursday). Alternatively I could ask Mrs Beedster to do the honours? PS does this explain the Contra? C
No worries mate, hopefully someone else is able to do the honours on this occasion The faulty Contra doesn't work with my Eminence either (equipped with Realist). It may be the ATPflex that somehow knackered my Contra though .... -
Well I just sold my perfectly functioning Shadow piezo pickup to Baboom, having taken last week ownership of an ATPflex-Electret from Lando Music in Germany. The new pickup has stopped working ( ) and I have a big gig (potentially 500+ audience) on Saturday. I have just packaged up the ATPflex to send back to Lando but obviously I won't get a replacement in time. So pretty please does someone have a piezo pickup (Shadow/Underwood/similar for ease of instalment) that they could post to me and I could borrow for the gig? I would need it by Friday (so I have time to instal and try out). I would then package up and post back immediately on Sunday? I would cover p&p via paypal and hopefully buy you a pint at some stage My alternative is to fork out for a new pickup and end up selling one, obviously at my usual BC loss!
Bad enough, the only set compatible set the current gauge (45-65-85-105) is the Rotosound (Rotosound RS 77LD Jazz Bass Flatwound monel) If I'm going to change the gauge, where shoud I be careful ? I understood that the neck must be checked, but can I bring the bass, let them ajdust the neck and done ? Thanks!
If you have a truss rod tool and you are getting similar gauge strings (they really do not have to be identical) you could follow some of the advice on BassChat and adjust the neck yourself. This isn't a scary thing to do! I don't know Cort basses but its probably very simple, like turning the truss rod screw a fraction of a turn (clockwise to tighten the neck if the strings are too far from the board, anti-clockwise to loosen the neck if the strings are rattling on the board)

Thomastik Infeld J344 Jazz flats ('TI Flats') are very popular on this forum but lighter gauge than I think yuo would like. In which case you could try La Bella Deep Talkin Flatwounds or D'Addario Chromes, each of which come in several gauges including gauges very close to your current strings. All are good choices in my opinion. A cheaper option would be Rotosound Flats, which some like but I am not so keen on as I find them quite stiff.
-
daft question but...when did roundwound strings come along
Clarky replied to iconic's topic in Accessories and Misc
Rotosound in the 60s IIRC. A certain Mr Entwistle championed them I think Edit from their PR blurb: "Rotosound pioneered the first roundwound bass strings in 1962" -
Like Lemmy's fabulous quote “That was a great time, the summer of '71 - I can't remember it, but I'll never forget it!”
