  1. Apparently, from what I remember (it was three years ago, I’d never heard of JJ, I was a little miffed about travelling to London for my MMus lecture, only to find it cancelled and JJ was doing a guest talk), any they’d spent hours and hours trying to get the sound right for the track. They’d tried loads of session players, but it wasn’t working. They’d decided to actually scrap it, having invested a fortune. JJ was in the studio late after everyone else had gone, he’d continued working on the track, and he’d got it sequenced, Horn came back and liked it, so the two of carried on working on it.
  2. I do too, my current one is a .032. I find anything else too twangy.
  3. Thanks. I came across people recommending them last night, but couldn’t actually see them on their site. I’ll email them and ask.
  4. Thanks. So what gauges are the E to G please?
  5. I fancy trying a set of these. I have my bass tuned E to C. The La Bella set comes in the following gauge: 060, 070, 094, 115. The high C is a 042, which seems quite heavy for a high C, and quite a jump in gauge up to the the G. Has anyone tried these, and know they feel?
  6. Yes, that’s right. I was at Goldsmiths a couple of years ago, J J Jeczalik did a guest lecture the one week, he spoke at length about the recording of Relax.
  7. I’m sure I remember reading somewhere that he played an old Alembic bass. Slightly off topic, I was at uni with his nephew, who is without doubt the most one of the most gifted musicians I’ve ever met.
  8. Status Graphite do strings.
  9. I think he did.
  10. I’ve seen photos of him with a Jaydee before, not a video though.
  11. Yes a few times. My uni had a thing with them, we could use them at a discount if the practice rooms at uni were all booked. They were still very expensive, they charged extra for things like keyboard stands and extra amps.
  12. If you’re in the MU you get free insurance, it’s provided through a company called Hencilla Canworth. Maybe get a quote from them direct? They were really helpful a couple of years ago when my MacBook was damaged at a gig. Unfortunately you only ever find out how good a company is when you make a claim. I think I’d therefore choose a specialist company that realises the needs of a musician, than simply rely on my household insurance, even if it costs a little more.
  13. I've got it recorded from last week. I haven't had chance to watch it yet. It looked good in the trailers I saw. I have a friend who's really into that kind of thing, he thoroughly enjoyed it.
  14. I don’t understand people’s reticence at friending someone on social media. I have over 3,000 ‘friends’ on Facebook, and about 80 requests that I haven’t looked at. I actually know maybe 100 of them, but many of the others are quite interesting people. You can always de-friend someone afterwards if they turn out to be a nazi or a tory or something.
  15. This is an excellent little recorder, with very little in the way of self noise, that’s capable of some really nice recordings. You can adjust the microphone setting by the little control on the top of the unit. It’s generally in really excellent condition, apart from a small mark that can be seen in the photo. I’ve used this for a lot of the work in my PhD portfolio, it’s perfect for incongruous field recording in and around towns and cities, it’s also perfect for recording gigs and rehearsals. Comes complete with the original box and packaging. Price includes postage.
  16. My dad listens to Smooth FM, which in my opinion is a station that caters for people who have no interest in what they’re listening to. They seem to play the same three or four artists in rotation. There’ll be one by Take that, followed by one by the bee-gees, then ABBA. Most stations are similar, I suspect if you ask someone what they just heard being played, they wouldn’t be able to tell you.
  17. I’m guessing you don’t post the cars though, the buyer collects them?
  18. I don’t think you’re being too fussy. You’re parting with money for something you’re not going to see beforehand. I’ve sold instruments to people and have always been happy to provide whatever photos they’ve wanted, and I’ve sent videos of me playing to a couple of them. As for social media, why not. It’s building up a picture of the person that you’re buying from, that’s how I see it.
  19. I suggested the name The Angry Gammons to a friend for his new jazz trio. He pointed out they’d probably lose their residency at the local Conservative club.
  20. I remember having to learn a Rolling Stones song once that hadn’t been recorded in standard A=440, there was a song at university too thinking about it. It’s maybe the same with this? They could have tuned to another instrument in the studio that was slightly out of tune? Just pick a key that you’re both comfortable with, and learn it in that. If you have to change if when you get a singer, it’ll probably just be a case of moving up or down a fret or two.
  21. I don’t know the song, I don’t think I’ve even heard it. This that I found here after a quick look is in Eb. Maybe ignore YouTube and play to the original record?
  22. It's probably just me and my short attention span, and the fact I'm quite busy. I started watching, then fast-forwarded a little, just in time to see you take a swig of coffee. I'd just make it shorter, and to the point. I watch quite a few of Janek's vlogs, his seem more structured, yet at the same time informal.
  23. This is the problem with flying with an instrument. You can ask five different employees from the airline, and you'll get five different answers, and probably be charged five different additional fees too.
