1.
I am indeed having a bit of fun at Vic and Steve's expense, despite the fact that they are both very good at what they do, if you like that kind of thing, ect. However, joking aside, the naked fact is that the level of virtuosity of a musician like Jaqueline Du Pre is completely beyond the reach and comprehension of almost all the so-called virtuoso exponents of the bass guitar . Players of her stature make most of the jokers who grace the front covers of guitar magazines look like the flimsy pretenders that they are. What sets Jaqueline Du Pre apart from them is the amazing and awe-inspiring depth of feeling and personal expression in her playing. Yes she has flawless technique, but like the very best musicians, you are never aware of it, because as a listener you are captivated by the emotion of the music she creates. It takes God-given talent plus a lifetime of dedication, study and practise to make everything seem so natural and effortless.
Totally agree 100%.
2. I did read somewhere though, that he once sacked Anthony Jackson from his band, 'cos he wouldn't dance .
3. Had to play this one at uni the other week, great groove . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_oNkVpBw1I
4. I think maybe the Zon's are slightly 'woodier' in their tone, I guess this could be due to the fretboards being made from a wood composite called Phenowood. Layers of birch wood impregnated with phenolic. Status basses and most Modulus are just phenolic resin. Though Modulus were sometimes built with chechen fretboards, Steve Lawson's are I believe.
5.
I like it, very moody and atmospheric. Did you decide not to go for a flute then? Having playing Oboe in a previous life, I have to say I think this piece suits the dynamic of an oboe.
Hi, Sorry I only just saw your reply. I'd still like to use flute too. I emailed your friend and sent her a rough mix of the music, she's probably like me and got loads of work on.
6. I had some flats from them a couple of years ago, they were pretty rubbish, just as you described. I just bought some more a few weeks ago and they're fine, quite nice and bright and flexible. Phone them and complain.
7.
I love the tone , would quite like to try one as I love graphite necks
Me too, hence my wanted list below .
8. Here's a nice example of how they sound http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2014/03/17/zander-zon-nine-inch-nails-hurt-for-solo-bass/ Just look on youtube for Michael Manring for further examples.
9. My one tutor bought her cello in a few weeks ago, it's something like 300 years old. She bowed it and I was just totally blown away by the amazing sound it produced.
10. I missed out on a beautiful 6 string fretless legacy at Christmas, I was outbid at the last minute on ebay . Modulus are nice too, but I'm guessing are gonna stay with their owners after the demise of the company.
11. Not bass I know, but how amazing was this lady, and how sad was the later part of her life ? I've been listening to a lot of classical music recently, cello music particularly. I've got scores for this and a few others, that I've been playing through. I don't think people realise how much you can learn from playing this sort of music on bass. Cello's are tuned in 5th's not 4th's, so some of the fingerings can be awkward. Also its lowest note is a low C on a 5 or 6 string bass. Bach's cello suites are amazing, and a real workout when played on bass, as is this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUgdbqt2ON0
12. Why do you not want to play weddings, and why do you want to use an agent ? A friends band I play for occasionally plays loads of wedding and does corporate stuff, especially around Christmas time, parties etc. I played with them at a Christmas farmers market last year, that was great. He does everything though, he can put together a jazz trio/quartet/quintet, or have a vocalist and do 'normal' functions stuff, and he has a DJ, he can also do umpah stuff and plays beer festivals, (he's a trombone player). It was all through word of mouth recommendations, people passing his name on, and eventually venues recommending him. It was hard work to start with, but paid off. I think he even used local florists and hairdressers to pass on his details.

I just put some rather nice Fodera nickel's on this, and have to say it's sounding brilliant .
14. Very nice in fact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qvLtxke7m4 I think so anyway .

I've had a few rather low trade offers from people, well meaning I'm sure, but this bass would be £2500 if ordered new from Mayones, so this is a bargain price for a great bass. I don't need to sell it, I'm happy it just sitting here with just the occasional bump until I find a buyer. I will be taking it off sale soon, I have a loads of course work to do and exams coming up that I need to concentrate on. So if it doesn't sell in the next week or so, it'll be withdrawn until the summer, so if you're interested get in quick .
16. I think most charge £25 to £30 an hour, and usually there's a discount for 2 hours.
17. Very dark grey colour. Short size, which is actually quite long. Bought as a present for me by a well meaning friend, but they're too long for me. £27.50 posted, which is a saving of £9.
18. Thanks for the comments, and the link.
19. Genz Benz shuttle 6. Sounded like a wasp in a jar, and had the most ridiculously noisy fan, hated it loads.
20. Something I'm working on for my degree course. It has to include a wind instrument, either brass or woodwind. I'm using an oboe sample, but I've enlisted the help of a lady oboe player who's very generously donated her time to replace the samples with a real oboe, in return I've said she can use the music on her website. Check it out and please let me know what you think. https://soundcloud.com/ambient-bassist/happier-now
Interesting.... Any neck dive when seated or standing?
No, it hangs really nicely, the weight is biased ever so slightly to the body, so it just hangs in the perfect position. I used it briefly last year for a couple of live things at university, my one tutor tried it and fell in love with it. He's not a 6 string player, but thought it was without doubt the nicest playing 6 string he'd played.
22. What's the difference between a total stranger from on here, Ebay or Gumtree ? A stranger is a stranger, or am I missing something, has there been a spate of mad axe men killing people whilst posing as buyers of goods from on Gumtree ? Seriously though, I do totally understand what you're saying. I've never taken anyone up into my studio room. When someone calls to pick anything up, then I take it downstairs and set it up there for them to try it. Some of the nicest people I've sold to though were off Gumtree, the rudest was actually from off here. A presenter from a local radio station bought a condenser mic from me recently, you get all sorts.
What's the nut width?
It's 53mm at the nut, 73mm at the 12th fret and 83mm at the 24th.
