1.
I've worked with some VSTs before I got my Phatty and it may sound similar (or identical) but still it feels different. I like the "offline" feel of a real synth. When I played a Minimoog reissue...My oh my.
I know exactly what you mean. Even though the NI S88 is a great remote keyboard & the ribbons for pitch & mod are fantastic, it's not a Moog. I've played my mates Phatty a few times & it's just such an expressive instrument. One hand on the keys, the other on the dials. I've hankered for a voyager for some time, but I couldn't justify buying one when there's so many other things I need.
2. Can't get a mic set up to record vocals, so Logic had to help me out. I've put a kick through a broken speaker emulator, so don't panic. Here's my entry... https://soundcloud.com/gxmix/one-last-note I might actually work on this with the band & see if we can work the arrangement. It's a fun bassline to play (though I've added a synth bass alongside).
3. I really didn't think I was gonna get anything done for this month, but I had some free time tonight so pulled my finger out. I'm not posting yet, as I'm off on Friday, so I hope to pop a vocoder vocal on it (I still can't sing). I think I've captured a mix of beauty & destruction so far. Looking forward to listening to the other entries too.
4.
I'm very much a Moog newbie, so if there is a viable/obvious Moog alternative, what would it be?
VST version, Native Instruments Monark. A/B'd it next to a Phatty & it's almost identical. The cut off position is slightly brighter on the Phatty, meaning you have to turn the cut off dial up a touch further on the Monark to get the same sound.
5. I think 60 watts isn't the issue, but more the driver/cab side of the combo not being designed to be played loud. It's interesting reading about the kick drum issue. I noticed it at our last jam. Though bass & guitar were a bit on the loud side.
6.
If you think your bass sound is best left to the sound engineer, then you probably have a very "vanilla" bass sound, and if so, you're correct. I have a very dirty bass sound indeed. I've done the same as others and just have an amp sim with DI out at the end of my chain, and give the soundman that
There's a phrase I've never really understood, though I get fully what you mean. Vanilla. Vanilla isn't cheap, it has a unique flavour & just about everybody likes it. Cheap "vanilla" ice cream on the other hand, not many people like it & it doesn't even taste of vanilla!
7.
They'll probably stick a knackered £10 Behringer DI in front of the amp, from past experience.
Haha, that's true!
8. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
9. I've got a big valve amp. I've had a lightweight class D. Both sounded different. Both sounded equally as good & bot got compliments. If you get a lame sound from a class D, then it's maybe not the map, but the bass/player.
10. I'd love to see a soundy in my situation. I have a valve amp with no DI & have no DI pedals, so the only option is to mic me up. Saying this, I play in a church too & I go directly into a DI box & use IEM & no amp. My plan is to get either a DI box to go after the amp or get a pre amp pedal with DI.
11.
Been looking at the blocks 25 as a replacement for my artiphon. First time I tried the rise I wasn't impressed, but spent some time with it in PMT Bristol a few months ago and it was really good. Very expensive though so I suspect I will never get one!
I was going to get a Rise about 1 1/2 years ago, but ended up getting a Native Instruments S88. The S88 is a great keyboard, but sometimes I regret not going for the Rise.
12. Been hankering for a Moog synth ever since I sold my Moog Bass Murf & LPF (now those 2 with an octave & you have some fantastic synth bass right from your bass guitar). I've kinda subdued it a bit by having a NI S88 & using Monark, which is a great VST version of the Phatty. Now though, I've been watching more Roli videos & hankering for a Rise 49. Great for synth bass & replacing the real bass too!
13. For cabs to go with it, I'd say either a good 2x12 or 2x10. I found a 2x10 more than adequate & you can always add a 2nd one if you need more volume. I've got a 4x10, which sounds great, but I did prefer the 2x10 I had.
14.
the most ridiculous statement ever made here
It's certainly up there. I found my old MarkBass rig to sound far better than the TE rig I had before it.
15.
I can't believe no-one's mentioned heft yet.
Isn't that something to do with the wife?
16. Do Markbass still offer the "Emergency backup" service? Having a google & I don't see it. If GAK ain't playing ball, let MarkBass know on here... https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359467951/ I've seen them step in a few times.
17.
Don't get me started on watts, RMS, continuous vs pulse power wave forms etc. I'll pop a blood vessel! For sure though in principle amps work best at about 45-70% of their volume range, so more headroom is better
It depends on the amp & cab(s). I've got a Radiovox Valve amp. 4 KT88 valves & I've not gone much past 1 on the master (like my old Markbass, it goes to 6). I think it maxes at about 200 watts. Sounds lush.
18. Headroom is more about how efficient your cabs are, not how much wattage the amp has. However, most light amps are marketed as being between 500 & 1000 watt (even the ones that aren't capable of it ). So you're gonna find you have a huge choice. I'd try Cuzzie's list & add Markbass, Aguilar & Glockenklang too. Try as many as you can & have fun doing so.
19.
I'm so sorry, checked the amp then nipped to the pub to make a couple of business calls- never really made it back! Visually, the front panel looks like brushed aluminium painted black. Temperature-wise it's very cold to the touch suggesting the same, but tapping with a pen sounds like it might be a kind of plastic, or just a thicker ali than the other panels. Very hard to tell, to be honest, although no signs of failure whatsoever. As I expected to be home sooner I didn't check the LMII! Glad you got a favourable response from the distributor, will you get a replacement or move on to something else?
The LMII is metal, the same as the rear.
20. I had the CMD 102p, possibly the loudest rig I've had, as well as the lightest. The B&W drivers have some serious travel & could easily outperform the Trace Elliott 4x10 I had prior to it. I think you'd struggle to not be heard with either combo.
21. I'd like a big lump of a valve amp to sit upon my cab, but isn't hernia inducing when it comes to moving it (my current amp weighs more than my car).
22.
There's a saying - "Compact/light, inexpensive, good sounding. Pick two".
Though with the Markbass combos & if you find £5-600 isn't expensive (which for a combo, it isn't), then you can get all 3.
23.
To get the ball rolling... Alberti's Last Waltz ... Enjoy.
No flies on you. Nice work too!
24. I've got a friend who's into purely analogue synths. He's went through loads, buying & then selling on if it's not what he was hoping. 3 synths that have remained in his arsenal since I've known him (about 4-5 years) are the AnalogKeys, Teenage Engineering OP1 (He sold his first one & then a month later went & bought another, as he found he missed it) & a Moog Phatty. I've played about with his synths quite a few times & just looove the Phatty. I need to go & see him soon as he's sold some other synths & got a couple of new ones. One being a Prophet 12.
25. The advantage of running at 4 ohm is that you're getting everything from the amp. The disadvantage, you're not gonna hear much difference & you put more strain on the amp. Ignore watts. The amp rated at 500w is the max it will put out. When you're playing, you'll most likely be using a fraction of that. If you like the sound of the 1x15, then get another the same. If not, then sell it & get a decent 2x12 or 2 2x10s. They give better dispersion than a 4x10 (says the man with a 4x10). Efficient speakers (or lots of drivers) are the answer to more decibels.
