  1. Oh dear. Makes me feel better for the times I've hit wrong notes at gigs!
  2. I kinda learned by accident. I tried it a couple of times when I was a kid & couldn't really do it too well (Higher Ground played slowly) so kinda concentrated more on tapping & other finger styles. I was messing about doing a groove finger style & then the thumb got twitchy & that was it. I'm not great at it, but I'm comfy playing slap in a song to an audience. It's the dead notes that get me too often.
  3. I'm pretty sure the original song is in D, so you wouldn't need to detune. I used to play along to the entire album on bass when it first came out (I bought the bass tab book, but no idea where that's gone). It's a simple straight forward song to play & I like the bass in the intro part too. My faves to play off that album were My Michelle, Mr Brownstone & of course Paradise City. I've never played any for some 10+ years now!
  4. True, but I thought he had a Laney combo (the use of amp (cab) led me this way). If it's not a combo, then don't listen to my old advice. Instead, sell your line 6 & buy an amp (head) to stick in to your 15" cab.
  5. That's something I'd like to do with my combo in a few years time (after the carpet has seen too many gigs/cats).
  6. What string is it on? Like the Funk say's, do it on the 9th or the 14th of a lower string. If it's on your lowest then I'd ask the guitard to show you what he means on the bass. This will result in one of two outcomes, he'll either not be able to do it (& you have a reason not to play it) or he'll be able to do it (which means you need to get practising as the guitarist has just shown you up!).
  7. I tend to use them & hammer ons quite often. The first bass book I bought was Billy Sheehan - the Talas years some 20 years ago & I still struggle to play most of it! It was a good purchase as it taught me lots of techniques.
  8. You could run an XLR to 1/4 jack cable (not a mic cable as you would need a male XLR) from your line 6 to the Laney. But I would save & get a more powerful combo or amp & cab.
  9. +1 on the meths. Good hobby shops sell mega heavy duty Velcro that has the stickyest glue ever.

    Defretting

There's a good video tutorial on YouTube for defretting a bass. I'll try get the link when I get up. MoonBassAlpha, could I ask what you did with the neck after defret, did you laquer it or oil it or anything? I have a Vox Standard that's in pieces just now.

    Defretting

I'm gonna do it to my Vox. It's a maple board, which is easier to defret apparantly as rosewood is easy to damage.

    Expression pedals

I've only ever had the one expression pedal & that's the Moog EP2. It has a knob at the side to adjust the amount needed to move the pedal. Solid build & costs about £30.
  13. GuitarGuitar is in Corstorphine. I've never been in but passed it many times. Come to think of it, I haven't been to any music shops in Edinburgh. I usually go to Glasgow or Dundee.
  14. Basses are for playing! The wife doesn't buy a really nice pair of shoes & then say "oh, they're too nice to wear on a night out", same difference. If it's precious, pop it in a hard case as soon as you're done playing. My Ibby is worth loads to me, but it's got more chips than the Golden Fry.
  15. It certainly sounds like 2 basses playing.
  16. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished instruments & a 5 string fretless would really be of interest. The only thing I'm not too keen on is how pointy the top horn is, the size is fine but if it was squared off a little so it didn't look 80's (like the tip of most Overwater top horns).
  17. Funny, there's been a few that seemed to have disappeared & I'd been wondering the same thing.
  18. Both disks of New Forms resides on my iPod too. I have Brown Paper Bag on single too that includes the rap. Change my life & Jazz are two brilliant songs from the 2nd disk (simple but effective basslines). I'll get a look for some of St Johns other stuff tomorrow hopefully.
  19. I haven't tried any of the other mb combos, but the 102 is certaintly loud enough for most gigs & it's easier to add a choice of 2x10, 4x10 or 1x15 cabs if you was playing a large venue (& look like one rig). I suppose it depends on what speaker configuration you're after as they both have the LM II(I) (as if you didn't know).
  20. Sounds like you want an Ibanez soundgear prestige. Or my bass which £1k might tempt me to part with it
  21. If you hate the sound of new strings then try flats. I took the plunge about a month ago & love how they have plenty of frequencies but don't sound bright like rounds do.
  22. Most insurance companies (not all tho) will cover musical instruments in & away from home under the personal belongings/possessions section & you can usually specify the items if they exceed the individual item limit, as long as they're not for professional use. I'm with Direct line (one of the co's I actually don't work for) & they're pretty good for cover, I'd give them a phone. As for covering stuff away from home when you're not with it, some do & dome don't.
  23. In the Amps for sale section there's a few decent combos for @ £200 (Ashdown, Trace Elliot, ect) & there's even a Carlsbro Bass Bomber for £75 (my first amp was a Carlsbro, they're as good as what you pay for, cheap but do the job).
  24. Save up & buy an Ashdown combo? They ain't all that dear & it's better than wasting money on something that isn't actually gonna do what you want. Have a look in the second hand section, there's plenty of bargains to be had.
