1. The old theory that 15s was for low end & the 10s for adding some top is of old when 15s (& 4x10s) gave out more bass. This was mainly due to the size of the cab. Mixing different drivers is a hit & miss thing, where it's most likely gonna sound different at each venue (sometimes good, sometimes dire, sometimes just ok). Keeping the drivers all the same size means that you're gonna get a more predictable result in each venue. Nowadays 15s don't give any more bass or less mid than 10s (unless they're cheap crap). I'm one for going with 2 2x10 cabs on the vertical. Putting the cabs so speakers are on the horizontal axis reduces the horizontal dispersion from them. Which makes the standatd 4x10 a poor design for stage use.
2.
Yikes, I thought I had to dogs dangly bits in cabs ( Ampeg PR-410HLF) ... what do I need ? Something lighter and perhaps 2 x 210's would be nice, as my stuff is a bit big for small venues.
A lot of folk don't rate Ampeg cabs that highly and they probably have more colour than this months photo comp. Great if you want that Ampeg sound, not so great if you don't. Have a look at Barefaced cabs if it's a transparent sound that you're after. Also worth looking at are Markbass, Bergantino, Aguilar & Genz Benz.
3. From the sound of things, I'd say that you like the look of Fender style instruments but maybe just don't connect with them? Go & try some things that are completely different. What about a Dingwall?
4. Depends on what make you want to go for. If you got a 1x15 cab or combo, then you could just add another 1x15 if you needed more volume. In theory, a 1x15 is louder than the equivalent 2x10 (as it covers a larger area, therefore can push more air). Best advice is to go & play through a few different bits of gear & see what you like the sound of.
5.
I would get something that can be upgraded as you progress. Combo's lack flexibility and if you want to get a combo make sure you get one that has a proper extension cab for when your needs grow. Otherwise get a head and small cab so you can either add more small cabs or replace the small cab with big cabs when the time comes.
That depends on what kind of combo you go for. Genz Benz, Markbass & Ibanez are a few that have all the flexibility of a separate head/cab & can be quicker to set up when in a hurry. Also the head is easily removed if you want a different cab to go with it. 2x10 cabs/combos are a good route & you can add another 2x10 for more volume if needed.
6. Passive mode, I can see a problem. I've used my active bass direct to a power amp a few times in the past & it's had the volume I needed for gigging. It is better with a pre in front though.
7. Like Truckstop says, get a rig that you can use in all scenarios. Plenty decent combos in the For Sale section on here.
8.
At the end of the day I guess I'm just trying to create a clean, un-coloured sound path so as to let the bass do the talking. I come from a regular guitar playing background and always love my US strat playing crystal clear through a good tube amp (with a touch of reverb), Generally I don't do FX. Keep your input coming guys. Cheers. Tony.
But that "colour" is what gives you that tone. Like your Strat through the "Tube amp", with or without reverb, it's getting coloured to create the tone that you like. Even through a power amp, it's gonna colour the tone to an extent or like longtimefred says, might sound a bit sterile.
9.
I really like the SR series. Unfortunately there's no fretless option .
http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Ibanez-SR505F-5-String-Fretless-Bass-Guitar-Brown-Mahogany/DC7
10. Yes, you could go directly into a power amp, but the point of having an EQ section is that each venue is different & may need a tweak here & there to suit the acoustics. Most folk on here set their EQ flat. Other thing is that your GB will have it's own EQ settings at "flat" & won't really be flat at all. I see icastle has just said that! I can't type fast enough!
11. I've never played anything & thought "Ooh, this could replace my Ibby". It does everything from Growly bass to Jazzy Maaap. Only thing I'm hankering for is a low B & most likely, fretlessnss.
12. I'd ask them to replace your combo. I've had mine for 4 years now with no probs at all.
13. When I was on the hunt for a rig about 4-5 years ago, I tried a PJB Suitcase & whilst it had a lovely sound, didn't have much in the way of volume. I tried it back to back with a EA 1x10 combo & that blew the PJB away. I ended up going for a MarkBass 2x10 combo & never regretted it. Get yourself to some shops & have a blast.
14. Oops, wiki is missing! Been a while since I last looked at it too. Try this. & also this is worth a spot of reading. See you next week.
15. The other thing you mentioned was impedance, that's the only one you need to take caution with. Have a read at the wiki.
16. It depends on what your wee 15w amp is capable of. I've gigged with 2 guitarists & a shed builder of a drummer using a 1x12 30w combo & though it was pushed to near breaking, coped with the gigs. I've also done many gigs with 100w heads & a couple of 15" cabs & had plenty of wumph, so don't worry so much about how many watts it says the head gives, but how much air you can move. Is there a decent PA? Going into that means you'll only need something for you to hear. You'll get some good gear in the For Sale section on here if you're willing to go 2nd hand. Could get something like a LMII & a decent 2x10 for @£4-500.
17. Put the MW before the BEF & go join here for more help.
18.
Haha erm not quite but I don't have an excuse for several of the pedals but I'm gradually opening the bands eyes to more effected sounds! The more electronica type pedals are more for my own playing I just can't be bothered to set up or rearrange multiple boards.
Too many folk look at effects & say "it won't fit in with this style of music". Pah! I use the same effects in my folk/country band as I do in my rock band (whenever they do get together, which is rare) & on my solo stuff. Playing techno/electronica inspired basslines in a genre creates a new genre IMO.
19.
Been rearranging my board a bit today, there may be a Moog low pass filter coming soon which will make things a bit awkward! Other plans are to replace the Hyperdrive, probably with a Rat Tail and I really do need an MP-201 oh and the Source Audio Hot hand EXP controller when it comes out.
Are you in a folk band too?
20.
VOX Standard Bass Black - 3504 Japanese (Aria) made Black polyester finish 34 inch scale length Full specification DiMarzio P Bass humbucking pickup Series/Parallel switch Body, neck, and fingerboard constructed of hard concrete maple Great fun, 30 years old and not usual JapCrap in my opinion. Cheers
Here's what's left of mine... I'm still considering putting it back together as I have most of the parts off it in a box (machine heads, electrics, pick ups, nut, neck plate, etc) or I might just make it into an ornament (probably for the shed). As you can see, I've tried defretting it but it's not very smooth. Filled the lines with jointing compound! The screws that held the P/Us in snapped & left a little in the body.
21.
Ah, so you want a really really good and really really cheap one? I'll have some of those as well
Your Status would most likely fit my criteria If there's one for sale in 6 months, I may go for it. A dingwall would be even better, but I can't afford one.
22.
It was only a suggestion
And a welcome one too. It's a good instrument, but I think I'd end up wanting a better fretless after a few years.
23.
Well, i jumped a few lines whilst reading your topic and just read and a few posts downs i read So i remembered seeing a 5 string Precision for sale a while back, this one: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1576892 When i saw this add i noticed that it was a P but with jazz pickups, then i re-read your first post and read so i knew that this bass was not a valid sugestion and removed it. I'm obviously not a monday morning person...
Thank's for settling my curiosity That's a good budget bass. I'm looking for something that I most likely wont change. I've got my eye on a nice Ibby 4005 & a Super Jazz 5 at present, but none are fretless (which is what I would prefer). I'm not so keen on going for something like the GWB35 (nice as it is, I'd rather pay for a better 2nd hand bass). But I've got time to search.
24.
Well Warwick are leading manufacturers of musical marmite.
Very true. I tried a Warwick $$ & really liked it. I dare say there's good Rockbass's out there too.
