  1. So are you saying you don't like ANY instrumental songs? To me, it's the song as a whole. I don't care if the leading instrument is a vocal, a bass, lead guitar or a triangle, if the song sounds good to me, that's what counts. I love the bass. A great bassline can really make or break a song (though I think the same can be said for any instrument). Here's an entire audience singing along with the bass & loving it...
  2. Cheers Dad. I've not heard that for years. I remember posting it, saying "I do like a bit of Manring". To which the long since banned BigBassChief replied "Preferably shaved Phillipino".
  3. I have to say, I agree. Many of the indie albums were 2-3 ok songs & the rest was poor quality filler. Paul Weller’s solo stuff is meh.
  4. I was there. They have a sound of their own & once you start listening to them more, they really grow on you.
  5. I've never listened to that album for years. Just popping it on now. 😏
  6. Back in my days of gigging, I earned petrol money & beer. That was it. This is true as long as you're enjoying doing what you love. Me & the Mrs used to love making cakes as a hobby. But as a business, it got to a point where it became unenjoyable and stressful, so we packed it in. I dare say the same can go for gigging. If you're playing in a band & have the same set of songs that you always play (especially if it's a function band ,where you might not like 1/2 the songs), then for some, that joy could disappear through the repetition.
  7. As a kid in the 70s, I though Elvis was 💩 He’s a 1 man boy band.
  8. Defo a popular opinion with everyone I know. Elvis does indeed suck.
  9. Here’s a possibly unpopular musical opinion…. I don’t know how true it is & it’s not my opinion, but it is “an opinion”. People who dislike slap bass only do so because they’re crap at playing slap bass. Me…. I like a bit of tastefully done slap bass.
  10. After 31 years, Ten by Pearl Jam is a very good album. Sorry, wrong thread?
  11. It is indeed. Still surprised at how much of a difference good pickups make. That’s where to spend the money for upgrades IMO.
  12. Fair enough. Sounded pretty much the same to me, but I do wear hearing aids due to partial deafness.
  13. Watch the first video in the thread (if you haven’t already). It shows a $100 guitar sounding identical to a custom built one when the pickups & strings are the same. I’m still looking for any that prove otherwise, but so far I’ve found nothing.
  14. That's a good point. My thinking is that although it seems wood has little to no effect on tone, it does have an effect on the playability of an instrument. I still plan on having a nice £2k+ bass, not because it may or may not sound different from a decent £6-700 bass with the same pickups, but because hopefully more attention to detail will have went into it, giving a pro quality playability and feel as well as being comfortable. I know that it's not a given with all higher priced instruments, which is why I'd likely be looking at the smaller companies. If I had the funds, it'd be a Ritter. 🤑
  15. Think that’s bad, look at rickenbacker! 😂
  16. I’ve respect for good DJs (having DJ’d in the past). It’s a skill in itself to put together a good set list & be able to mix in snippets of other songs on the fly so that they don’t sound like 2 songs playing over one another is crucial. Reading the crowd (who are there to dance) is very important. I don’t class DJs as musicians. However, producers are very much so. Just on different levels as any other musician would be.
  17. On the 80s & early 90s one of my fave bands were RHCP. Then Californication came out & so started the "More of the same". John rejoined them recently, so I was holing for more pre Californication stuff, but the new album is a big bit pish. I love Jazz, but it has to be good. None of this 12 musicians playing different songs. R+R=Now's album is pretty good. Never got the fascination with Oasis. They're a bit average (& I even thought that when they first appeared). I liked "Indie" music back in the 90s, but it should have been left there & don't know why it continues to be such a prominent genre today. I'll listen to any genre of music from Holst to Moderat to Iron Maiden to Silk Sonic. Despite being a Christian, I can't stand the constant samey guff from the likes of Bethel, Hillsong & what other soundalikes there are. It leaves me cold.
  18. He’s not convincing me. As you probably know, thicker strings sound warmer than thinner ones regardless of what the fretboard is made of.
  19. For CCW, the number method is an easy way to remember things, as they only use 1, 4, 5, 6 in some order. Outside of it, get a key change & the number system falls on its face into sharp chippystones.
  20. We’ve used tracks on a couple of certain songs, but it’s been for an “item” rather than during worship. With IEMs, we get the click track (provided by drummer’s metronome) & the MD can tell the band whether we’re doing an extra chorus or a bridge and if it’s to be all in or down.
  21. Fair enough. What about a splitter to send one to the monitor & another to 1 or more headphone amps? I know it’s a cost & really it should come from church funds. But it shouldn’t be too much.
