I got a Sterling last week. Huge range of sounds from it. Needs better strings & the strap buttons are a bit too small, but they’re both very easy fixes.

I’d get to a couple of shops & try a few different ones out. Find one that’s good in Your hands. You might have your eyes on a Sire but find it’s not a good fit for you & prefer the slim neck of an Ibby, or a fat P bass neck on a Squier. Only trying them out will let you know. Though it may be hard to find a Sire to try, unless you’re local to one of the very few stockists, or a local BCer with one.

Spent a bit of time giving it a set up, trying to get the neck relief & intonation set correctly. The action is about 3mm, but I'm getting a little fret buzz off the B, E & A strings around the 7-12 frets, so maybe needs a bit more of a concave? The D & G strings are fine. I'm gonna replace the strings as I believe the ones on it are just cheap Asian strings & that might be a big contributor to the fret buzz. But that might have to wait until next month as the house has taken my spare money for bathroom renovations. I like the bite of the roundwounds & the range of tones I'm getting is huge, but I might go with a set of flats on it. Speaking of tones, I'm loving the sounds this thing can produce, even with the EQ just left flat. The Humbuckers positions have a great sound. Neck Humbucker is fantastic, with an almost P bass type sound, but different. The Bridge H has a more honky sound, but still with a good depth. Both together has a deeper mellower sound, which I was surprised at, as my Ibby (which is PJ) has the deep mellow from the P, the honk from the J & mixing the 2 together to get a mix of deep & honk (donk?). Moving on to the other 2 selector positions, we have the outer 2 single coils or the inner 2. These both sound great too & sound more Jazz bass like, but there's a bit of a volume drop from any of the H modes, so I back off about a 1/4 turn of the volume for H modes. The knobs have no markers on them, so I've combatted this by putting a small marker on the volume pot with a square of coloured tape. So after the strings, I think I'll be changing the pots to something similar bit with a marker on them. Following that, I'll probably do further mods. Maybe a better preamp or better pickups, but I'm liking the sounds so far. The majority of what it'll be doing is studio work, with the occasional church session about once a month or so.

I’ve been looking at getting a cheap 5er for a wee while. Earlier this week I decided to get a Sterling Stingray 5 as I’d heard a lot of praise for them. It arrived today & I have to say, it sounds pretty good for a cheap bass & looks rather tidy too. Its a bit of a lump compared to my Ibby SR1000 & the neck looks huge. But once I start playing, it feels really nice. Here’s a couple of pics. I’ll let you know more about the sounds once I get more familiar.

There's quite a few great basses in your budget in the "For Sale" section on here... But like others have said, it's down to what your criteria is. E.g. styles of music, who you want to sound like, how many strings, etc. I'd look at these brands, but don't limit to just these... I’ve been on a few different keys forums, but most are manufacturer related. Metapop is Native Instruments related, but has a good forum & some great competitions too, but it’s not Basschat level. How about a Keyschat subgroup?

Sorted it. I created a new midi profile in Midi Studio, closed Audio Midi setup & then reopened Logic. Had to re set up the Jorge as Mackie Control, but it all works perfectly. Thanks. I’d have never looked there had you not pointed me there.

Well I had a look, but I've not succeeded. Tried creating an Aggregate device, but that only seems to be for audio devices (it sees my audio interface, but none of the midi devices. In "Midi studio" I can see my controllers, but I can't see how to make a composite device. I googled to see where I was going wrong, but couldn't find an answer.

For my birthday (was Sunday), the Mrs got me a Korg Nanokontrol2. I've set it up as a Mackie Control within Logic so I can use it as a mixer, but whenever I turn on my keys controller (NI S61 mk2) it stops working as a mixer. Do any of you fine chaps know if there is a way around this?

GarageBand is essentially the "Demo" version of Logic. When you open Logic for the first time, it's in a simplified version that's not too dissimilar to GB. But as you get to know it, you can then go into the file menu (Logic Pro>Preferences>Advanced>Enable complete features) to open the whole thing up.

As my Mrs calls them, "Cardboard box" songs. They're very predictable, uninspiring & follow the same formula every time. It's pretty much all our church plays. All the main worship bands seem to release albums full of these sort of songs. There'll be one or two that are slightly better, but our worship leader ladies seem to have a knack of picking the worst tracks from each album.

The sad reality is that the majority of CCW can be played on one string without any difficulty. I’ve found myself not practicing to the original versions of songs anymore & just find acoustic versions to practice along with. This way, a more fitting bassline prevails during worship.

Having a 4x10 sat under my hall stairs for the past few years, I'd say 10s are now my least fave speaker size. 😂
