  1. If it's still about in march '15 then we'll talk! Fat chance....
  2. My favourite bass player / musician at the moment - less the occasional silly indulgences with the 'super fast slap arpeggiation'
  3. It's funny - I went into town the other week with the express intent of buying a CD /DVD. No where had any! I think there is still a market for a smaller, competitively priced, knowledgeable retailer out there... I have never been very good at buying over the internet as I have to wait too long
  4. hah, I used to listen to Epic on my paper round. Mr bouncy bass sound himself...
  5. I would also say "I predict a riot", and if you fancy funking it up a bit 'You are the Universe' (Brand New Heavies) is also groovy. 'Ruby' also Kaiser Chiefs has got nice variation and feel. "Under the bridge" RHCP nice syncopation if you need a slow number. How about some Hendrix? Lots of scope to double the guitars and play around a bit.
  6. Oh I want this. Do you part-ex kidneys? I think if someone put this and that Celinder Jazz 5 from a while ago in front of me, and said 'you must choose 1' I would probably just explode. Messily.
  7. I don't think it's quite as clear cut as that, as we were all scoring off our own preferences and with significant variation in string age (and some diff types). What I felt was remarkable was that going through the test some of the basses really sounded 'vintage', whilst others were more modern - and some horribly bright. I happened to pick the Hoppus as my favourite because it was warm and clear and well rounded - the sort of sound I like. The second one I picked was Loz's 78 P - also sounded fantastic but more vintage. I happen to think I learnt more about what I am looking for in a bass sound than whether one bass is 'better' than the other... and incidentally I found the 78 easier to play than the Hoppus (though man, that surf green finish....). I have to say though, I would not have considered buying one before going through that test!
  8. Got back home in one piece. Lots of fun, and great to be able to try lots of different basses to try and home in on my next purchase! Think I am sold on the P bass, just need to wait for more pennies to stack up. A great pleasure to meet such a friendly bunch and big thanks to the Greek & Chris who made it happen, and loz, nick and sibob who all made exciting noises. Look forward to the next one! Dan
  9. Mmmmm, lovely Will be a while before the funds are restored for bass purchasing, but if this doesn't sell in the meantime, I'll ping you to see if you still have it. I do like celinders! Bump for beauty
  10. I thought this song had promise. I heard the intro and thought, 'interesting sound nice vibe'. Then it hit the chorus and I thought, 'good chorus line, nice harmony, kind of updated motown' Then the chorus repeated 4 billion times and I was instantaneously morphed into a dog, sucked into a reversed black hole and my soul rendered to tiny pieces of dirty, burnt paper. I've not really been into it since then. p.s. if they can't even perform a bad repetitive song live, then they really should consider something else as a pass time.
  11. Cheers for the thought - I have already checked out their website and they dont list them in their strings section. Guess I'll put in a shipment from the US as may as well deal direct.
  12. Been trawling string sites and shops, and can't seem to find any Fbass strings for sale in the UK. Just wondered if anyone else had this problem, or if they just bought direct from US from Fbass? Your wisdom is much appreciated! Dan
  13. Awesome. A library! Now if only I didn't have to work for a living...
  14. Being a backwards sort of chap, I have been lurking in the background a while, and only recently started posting properly on the boards. So, I thought a quick introduction might be in order. Bonjour! Salut! Yo! Greetings! My name is Dan, and I have been playing bass for about 20 years - yoink! it's a shock writing that. Started when 16 in the usual fashion of having some mates who played guitar / drums and needed some low end support. First band was a grunge/indy impro group called the Stoned Yetis, swiftly developing into a performing band 'Hot Buddha and the Furious Schmoo' with guest guitarist/tuba player, and a 'play by numbers' synth man. It kind of went downhill from there really. I now have a lovely collection of gear which I continue to slowly expand, I have an album on the go, some library music floating about and I try and take part in the local musical community. Bit of depping here and there. Stylistically, pretty broad from electronica, to 'good metal' ( ) to melodic,. prog, definitely funk / jazz and motown. Getting more into playing jazz at the moment and working on reading dots rather than being lazy with chord charts... just the lack the time to really get it nailed at the moment. Interested in learning more about structuring harmony and melody which melts my brain a bit. Well up for meeting players in the area (Aylesbury, Bucks) for jams and sharing sessions - I think its a great way to learn. Hoping to be involved in a new musical project soon but will see how that pans out. Sooner or later will try and form my own band in the 'jazz funk soul meets glitch hop / retro electronica in the gym cupboard and has terrifying babies' style. Thats probably about it off the top of my head. As I said, 'Beep beep!'
  15. I think you just have to accept that as in all things, the more you pay the more you get. Yes there are diminishing returns, but they are still returns.... and people value them differently. The ability to customise things down to the n'th degree.... to have a certain type of inlay, to have a propellor attached to the head to blow glitter and make sparkles at your show. When I bought my Alleva Coppolo second hand, I tried vintage basses, modern basses, second hand basses... and I am lucky that the one I picked up and went 'this is the one' was within reach. For me it was about finish, feel and sound.... and you will simply struggle to get the finish and feel of a higher end bass on a cheaper bass. So high end for me is based on price, usually driven by the level of choice offer the buyer, and the amount of time spent on building and finishing the instrument. p.s. We need to adjust references to Middle Age based on the the poster. If you are a 18-19 YO Middle Age = 25 - 40 if you are 20-30 = 30 - 40 if you are 30-40 = 40 - 50 if you are 40+ = 40 - 60 ) p.p.s. I am in the 30-40 range, but am lucky enough to have had opportunities (and the sense to work hard and take them) that means I can afford a bass I want now and again
  16. Hey If all these additions were grouped into Beginner / Intermediate / Pro!!111omgH4x0r on the first page, I reckon this would be a potential STICKY of win. I have already had a go at a couple, and have bookmarked for every spare moment. D
  17. It deserves to be. Definitely on my wish list - the AC5 snuck in first! Beauty of a bass.
  18. Ahh, must admit this isn't a subject I searched for.... good reading though! How about.. a 'fumble' p.s. thats a suggestion, not a proposal
  19. Having just signed up to a bass gathering, I was wondering if this had already been determined. A fugue? A boudoir.....? A register??

    Feedback for Harry

Bought a beautiful bass from Harry, mint condition, very smooth transaction - great comms, very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Thank you good sir! Dan
  22. If you think it will expand you as a player, you like the sound, it plays well, and you can afford to feed you and yours... why the hell not? Life is not a re-run etc.
