1. More headroom? More boost on the volume and EQ = more range of sounds, though you can just turn the volume down if you don't want it distorting My jazz has an 18V 3 band preamp, it's nowhere near as my 9V 2 band musicman preamp though, just a hell of a lot louder. (strangely enough my passive modded SUB is louder than my actuve.... ), if you've ever tried a bongo preamp though, phwoar! That has crazy amounts of boost on everything! So much power!! That said though, you wouldn't turn any of the controls all the way up, it just has a lot of headroom.
 2.
+1 Although Cliff was an early inspiration on me, I still find it hard to actually hear his supposed "genius" within the songs themselves. He is only just about audible on the first 3 albums, and even in live performances back then he was still only just about audible, and from what I can make out he isn't exactly playing anything different to James at all. He is a legend but quite overrated when you look into it. Greg Christian of Testament could've easily given Cliff a run for his money back in the mid 80's mind you. S&M is Epic.
Have a listen to call of ktulu, the bass on that is really cool. Though i do agree about testament's bassist, he's awesome.
 3.
Boring and generic are not adjectives I associate with any of my jazzes (Lakland DJ4, Fender Marcus Miller and a Reggie Hamilton) I own a Stingray too. Whilst it's a punchy, slap monster it is nowhere near as versatile as the Jazzes. So my vote goes to the Jazz.
I have a reggie hamilton jazz (nice to see another reggie owner ) and a SUB, and while the jazz is a nice bass, i do find that it sounds a bit boring, i much prefer the musicman growl, but that's personal preference. It's just that almost every bassist uses a jazz, and while i can see that they're fairly versatile and have nice necks, i think that the musicman is just as versatile and sounds more interesting too.
 4.
Let's face it, 95% of the time in metal you can't hear any bass worth a toss anyway- and that goes doubly for Metallica (and all their bassists) IMHO. I like a lot of Metallica's music, but have never found anything inspiring about any of their bassists, or bass playing.
Really? Because rob's playing really jumped out at me in their latest album, as with Cliff's in most of their early stuff.
 5. Welcome to the forum, nice to see some more lady folk around here! Seriously though, i hope you enjoy your bass playing, and learn your theory as early on as possible! that's something i learnt the hard way. Sam
 6. MM SUB all the way, if you like a nice growly, punchy sound, that's the way forward. If you like a boring generic sound, get the jazz. (i have both) I'm also of the opinion that EBMM basses (even the SUBs) are of much higher build quality than any fender, and EQ'd right, it can sound fairly similar too. Though a jazz will never sound like a musicman.
 7. I couldn't give a f*** what he uses, most of his tone is in the way he plays and his amplification.
 8.
Thats handy info. Thanks very much for sharing this with me. I shall have a shuffty round WHS when the shops re open and see if I can get copy.
No worries mate. It's not amazingly comprehensive, but it will give you an idea of what you can get for your money. and when you read it, remember that those are the list prices and you'll probably actually only pay about 75% of that on some of them if you find the right deal.
 9.
Good news everyone i got my money back
Me too
 10. Hey dude, got this month's "bass guitar magazine" for christmas, and i just thought you'd like to know there's an article on 25 beginner basses.
 11.
I tried both speakers seperately as I haven't correct lead, do you think that would make a difference?
It would help if you tried them at the same time, but if the difference is really noticeable then i guess you're entitled to a new pair.
 12. brilliant tombboy! Also this guy's total ignorance made me laugh. Also the fact that he says he can spell the word "bass" properly... and then chooses not to. Illiteracy is cool, it's what all the kids are doing these days. (no really)
 13.
TBH, If Reverb have advertised EBMM SR5's @ £499.00 and stock listed at 'available' (which it was, when I checked before they withdrew the page) then they are legally obliged to complete the transaction at the time you placed the order. Just the same as displaying goods in a shop marked up wrong.... you get them for the price marked! Stick to your guns and see how far it gets you....
Good idea, might get on the blower boxing day and have a word with some of their sales staff.
 14.
Try that old CTRL+F5 business. There are three thumbnail pics in the edited OP.
Saw them, i assumed they were official pics.
You are right, but it may as well be. To be honest, i have not had time to post pics, but will do it soon. They are ones lifted off the net, but it is identical exept for different grain patterns in the wood, but it is extreamly difficult to photo with flash as its so glossy, and it needs natural daylight to get the best results. will do it soon and post it. I would say though that the 3rd pic could well be my very bass!!
Ah ok then, but no pics no bass! And it might well be, with only 24 of them!
 15. Both speakers should sound EXACTLY the same, it's very important that they do. If they don't, send them right back, don't even hesitate.
 16.
No, they should be identical.
+1 VERY important that they sound the same.
 17. I still don't see any pictures of the ACTUAL bass? Or is it just me?
 18. Wow, that's awesome! I asssume you copied and pasted from another forum?
 19.
Those people who made payments, did you make them with a credit card or via a debit card?
I paid with a debit card... As i said before, they've phoned me telling me i'd be gettinf a refund, maybe if i hadn't heard anything from them at all i'd have been a bit more worried, but for now i'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt until at least a few days after christmas.
 20. There are some cheap squier jazzes in music room in nottingham at the moment. A classic vibe jazz for £240 and a vintage modified (the one i'd have) for £200.
 21. I was told i'd get a full refund... And if that's not what i get, i'll kick off... But for now i'm giving them the BOTD.
 22. Streamer stage 1 IV (IV being roman numerals for four.... V is 5, VI is 6)
 23. Why not just buy a firewire PCI card? they're only about a tenner.
 24. Well i got a phone call from reverb saying that i didn't get the SR5 because they sold it to someone else and they're refunding the money. Oh well, at least my money is safe.
 25.
Just for the record, no, there's nowhere in York that stocks decent gear.
I'll tell my friend at york uni that
