1. http://www.alembic.com/info/woodsamples.html this might help. Should give you a good idea of most woods found in basses, and some pretty good bass porn too if you click on the thumbnails. Check out the ziricote, that might suit your needs.
2.
With the exception of electric guitars and electric basses, what other musical instruments have significant stylistic variation within the species? You never hear a trumpet player complaining about the fact that all trumpets look the same. S.P.
I once saw a trumpeter, I think it was Eric Darius, who said he was fed up with not being able to have an individual sax in the was guitarists do their guitars, so he had someone do a zebra paintjob on his sax. Was pretty cool. I think guitars are different from most other instruments, in that the shape of the body doesn't have much acoustical effect, whereas you can't really start tinkering with the shape of the tubes in your trumpet.
3. If I'm going to spend the kind of money usually involved in a decent bass, I don't really want something that looks like everything else i.e. fender basses. At V fest I think I counted only 3 basses that weren't fenders, or perhaps just fender shaped, 2 of which were musicmans. Oh yes, and singlecuts that go halfway up the neck just look a bit silly to me.
4. The Pink Panther theme tune. Not musically impressive, but brings a smile to most peoples face (including mine).
5. have an 'I wish I weren't about to become a student and therefore am unable to afford this' bump.
6.
Like escholl said, the ones I've played through do seem to be more midrangey (I know it's not a real word, but hey...). Whilst I love the impact neo mags have on the weight of cabs, I can't bring myself to use a feather-weight cab that I don't like the sound of; instead I've gone for a top-notch small (Bergantino 2x10) cab that doesn't weigh much, but sounds incredible and will give most 4x10's a run for their money.
Not that I've had any experience with neos, but I can't see why they would be more 'midrangey', as surely they'd still generate the same shaped magnetic field around the coil? I've heard this midrange bias mentioned several times in reference to neo's, and i just can't fathom the reason behind it.
7. Yeah, my first bass was a passive streamer rockbass. Was pretty good, with a decent sound the few times I played it at a proper volume. Have barely only played a jazz for the grand total of about a minute, so not sure how the necks compare, but I found it fairly comfy. Also, I think the standard is for them to have soapbar pickups, but you might want to check their site for conformation. Their RRP is £300, and most people still say they're great value for money, including myself (especially as I nabbed one for £220), so i guess they'd be comparable to a jazz. Hope that vagually helps.
8. just got myself one of these. A few things I got confused with, mostly due to me being stupid, but now using it is pretty simple. If you wish to hear the results, I did a quick recording and uploaded the result into the groove library.
9.
Good effort Zach, groovy!
Cheers ped. I think if i record another I might play it through more than twice before recording it. Now that I've set the bar not especially high, hopefully other people will show us their efforts
10. boredom + new stealthplug = me recording my somewhat sloppy playing and uploading it for others to hear!
11. Is it bad that that clip sounds to me like the backing from a cheesy porn film?
12. Damn you! I would have been perfectly happy not knowing about this album until the day it came out, now instead i have to wait in anticipation for over a month!
Caught the mighty Pusher at Glastonbury this year .......he was amazing. I danced like a bugger & was amazed at his bass lines. When he did Hello Meow i stood stock still all the way through. I'll check this out
definitely didn't know he was playing at Glasto, may have actually gone if i had. lucky sod.
13. out of curiosity, why do you feel the need to play it 40bpm faster? that song is truly brilliant, especially live, and doesn't need altering.
14. I just responded to G-77 about his offer, so i'm not sure if I should be asking this, but is there anyone going from north london (i'm in barnet) with a space? just as it would avoid having to take a tube to west london
15. has anyone mentioned spectors, or is my bass somehow safe through all this? since it's not custom, signature, and has a standard top, I think every amp i've ever considered getting has been mentioned though. I think the only resort left is to make my own!
You disgust me too, nowt wrong with Bill
yes there is, he's a scientologist.
16. well I played my first gig on thursday, and learnt the hard way the lesson of 'never play a song you can't play perfectly'. The night before the guitarist showed me the bassline to killing in the name of, which I'd never bothered to learn due to the effort of tuning to dropped D. So at the end of the gig we decided it would make a good closing song, and all was fine and dandy up to the guitar solo, when both the guitarist and I realised that I didn't know the bassline for that bit! Thankfully I had the sense to just play a modified version of the main riff, so I don't think most people noticed (I hope!). I also realised that playing ska music is suprisingly boring. Other than that it was pretty good though.
17. Well I don't know about you, but I find I can barely spread my fingers if my thumb is sort of wrapped round touching the fretboard. Whilst this may not be a 'correct' technique, i do reckon that it makes more sense: http://www.bass-musician-magazine.com/Gene...5660&page=0
18. If you directly copied and pasted this, which I'm guessing you did, then you might want to correct the punctuation in this section, as it doesn't seem quite right: "You need to be able to comfortably play every string It's unlikely that the bass will be low that you can't reach all the strings but I have seen some people come close!"
19. he uses a loop pedal, which as the name suggests, can record what you've played and play it in an ongoing loop. that's as far as my knowledge goes, other than you can get them with varying abilities as to how many loops they can handle at once.
20. since my mention of this got swallowed up in the other topic, I thought I'd mention it in a seperate one. The site is www.bass-musician-magazine.com, a bimonthly magazine, which is completely free! has some good stuff in it, and you can't exactly say it's bad value for money. enjoy
21.
It's new to me too ...but thanks to this post, I'm now a (free) subscriber.
Well it's always good to share. There's even an article by my on the london bass solo night recently, as I was bored one night and had nothing to do.
22.
Why haven't I heard of this before? Their list of writers and contributors is jaw-dropping.
I'm don't know. I can't really remember how I found it but i think i've almost all of every episode
23. I'd say sell the yamaha if you can get a decent price for it, and then using what you get from that plus your £200, see if you can get a decent second hand somethingorother
24. I dont bother with proper bass magazines, I do read www.bass-musician-magazine.com though
25. oh come on now. that's just being mean. All you're doing is driving up the price of spectors for the rest of us (supply and demand and all that)! Is there really much difference in sound, especially once you're on stage?
