Cocobolo

you might want to go check out the alembic forum, as all the guys seem to have a ridiculous amount of knowledge about the properties of different woods. they use cocobolo in quite alot of their basses it seems, although I think it's all wood they've had for 20 or so years. In fact they've even made an EUB with a cocobolo front.
2. Various times in the for sale section i've seen basses that people comment about how it was previously theirs. This made me wonder what bass on basschat has had the most owners (preferably all basschaters). Any ideas?
3. Sorry if I'm being a bit dim here, but there's one thing I'm unsure about. If you're playing two octaves below the chord that's being played, then will your note effectively be both a 2nd and a 9th and the same time? or does it not even matter? I have a habit of over thinking things, so tell me if i should stop worrying. Also, had never before heard the bit about avoid notes, shall keep it in mind.
4. in my head that works out as either just buying a bass, or for the same money buying an almost identical bass + an effects pedal for the same money
5. Alembic series I, with a balance K omega body shape, with a 2 colour transparent burst finish, over quilted maple. A bit like this one, but would rather matching wooden nobs, and black hardware. Can you tell i've thought about this before?
6.
1442 +1 = 1443 although i have a feeling this may not be accurate at the moment, as this thread was started like a year and a half ago?
1443+1=1444 I'm sure it'll work out as a good guestimate. Am now curious to what the collective value of all these are, since if you assume they average at a grand each, we're up to rougly £1.5million. Then with the value of amps as well, it's probably enough to buy a custom alembic.
7. I was once told that i stand like a bassist. Still not sure what he meant by that.
8. this may seema stupid question, but is the tanglewood acoustic a bass or guitar? and what sort of price would you be looking for, since when i googled tanglewood acoustic prices seemed to range between £200 and £2000 (almost)
9.
Here is a song me and my dad did. He said I was a bit out of time but hopefully you can comment on what u guyz think!! Cheers Z
I'd invest in a metronome if i were you.
10.
He's been a sideman on dozens of albums, covering pretty much every genre. Check out Equilibre by David Cullen for some beautiful 'supportive' fretless playing and 'The idiot king' by Attention defict for some mad band playing. 'Yo Miles' is another cool album with Henry Kaiser.
Just searched for all those things on spotify. It has failed me...
11. I'd quite like to hear any stuff he's done with other people, either as lead or support. As brilliant as I think his music is, I'm aware that only bassists listen to bassists (did that make sense?), so would like to hear any group stuff he's done.
12. surely not using your little finger is imposing a restriction on yourself and your playing that could be overcome without much difficulty. Although that said I've realised I massively favour my little finger and barely use my ring finger.
13. a bump after 25 minutes? calm down now, this isn't talkbass. If you want I've got a rockbass streamer standard you can have for £150. Unless you're really uncertain about whether you'll be playing for long, i'd recommend something that sounds half decent so that you can still try and jam/play some small gigs. I was happy with mine for about a year and a half until I felt it was time for something better. Not quite sure how Eight managed to get through basses in two months, especially money wise.
14. That's one pretty bass you got there! I was just wondering if you knew the reasons behind the strange arrangement for both the tuners and tail piece, since I'm guessing it's more than aesthetics.
15.
Judging by some of these memories and stories, I've been doing Uni wrong. Might scrape a 2:2 (deffo got a 3rd though) as it was bloody boring, did get drunk a bit, but I seem to be lacking the oodles of sex and general fun. I can only assume that if it's meant to be the best part of my life I might as well pick a fight with a train now.
I didn't know saga did uni's as well as cruises. Where are you? My first guess would be Imperial as I've got a friend there who says it's quite dull.
16. Tinman, my apologies, but all of my experience with people who play purely with a pick comes school. Every year we have a battle of the bands, and every year a bunch of guitarists decide they're going to become bassists, so they stand there badly hammering out root note crotchets with a pick, which doesn't add to the music at all and just completely disappears under the guitars, yet they still think they're super awesome. I guess that's what I dislike, not the fact itself that they're using a pick. At first I offered to help, but none ever accepted it.
17. Ok, reckon i'll say something constructive this time. I have nothing against bassists who feel picks give a better/good sound, as I agree that it can sound good. What I object to is bassists who use a pick because they're an ex-guitarist who can't be arsed to at least try out the most widely used bass technique (or I assume it's more widely used these days).
18. clicked on this expecting the kind of DnB you find in clubs, not the jazz kind. Despite that, it was still pretty good.
19. it could be worse, they could be playing rhythm guitar.
20. I like cake (this seems like the most productive response I can think of).
21. why not just get some lil' 10W practice amp? I brought one with me this year to halls, and it just sits nicely under the desk, ready for whenever I feel like a quick noodle. It also doubled as a sub-woofer for my laptop, as I split the signal between that and my normal desktop speakers.
22.
Personally, it's not my scene, but I do think the Yanks really do know how to do Gospel etc. so much better than we do. Everybody from the musicians to the choir, the preacher to the congregation. They all completely immerse themselves in it. When I see anything in the UK, it all looks a bit stilted, almost as if they're meant to look like they're really into it, yet at the same time still being a bit reserved as if clapping hands or holding their arms in the air is enough.
In my head all american gospel services are like the one in the blues brothers. Unfortunately, this means i'd never actually go to one for fear of being dissapointed.
23. If someone were to put out those songs as an album, although perhaps change the lyrics, it would probably be better than most of the stuff out there at the moment. Also, great bass playing on the second song (it's how far i've got through listening). You definitely manage the whole being supportive, but without disappearing role which is what i aim for. Edit: just flicked part a religious bit, mostly due to being jewish, and ended up with it displaying the line 'mould me, fill me, use me', and thought they were now switching to singing songs by The Who.
24. what kind of tempo are we talking about here? cant work out what it is, but i might be playing it far too slowly
25. thought I'd do the clever thing and google this question. ended up with this thread from talkbass. Of course, they don't reach a final conclusion, but I've now moved the amp into the shady part of my room just incase.
