I am totally jealous of your Wimbish-esque Spector. I was talking to a guitarist friend tonight who said he wanted to do a Tackhead / On U Sound-type thing with old-school hip-hop/reggae beats and modern UK rappers, and it immediately made me picture your bass.
 2.
I've used a mixers, a switch boxes and a dual channel amp, but now I use a planet waves circuit breaker cable which has a little latching button on the right angle jack to mute the signal.
I don't trust those damn things. I've seen one fail before, and it was quite embarrassing for the guitarist who thought he was about to come in on a huge rocking chord and he didn't.
 3. So all the "classic" basses seem to be American; your Fenders, Rickenbackers, Gibsons to an extent. What non-American basses have the same Rock n' Roll cachet? Yes there's the Hofner Violin Bass, but what else? I'm looking more for older designs, not stuff like the Status body shape or the Thumb which I think can be considered modern classics. I want stuff more timeless than that. Some of the Shergolds I've seen in the For Sale section seem to fit the bill, so if anyone's got photos of those please share them, but what else is out there and actually cuts it as a gigging bass?
 4.
"When Leo met Howie"
Wow. Look at those trousers and that pocket protector. Leo Fender was a total poindexter.
 5. If you're using pedals you should really have them between your guitar and amp, they're designed to handle an instrument-level input, not line-level. Have you tried them infront of the amp to see if they perform better?
 6.
How do you get that lovely lovely so '80's fretless sound that Karn does on Music For Chameleons, the Alan Partridge track?? What effects are going on there??
That's Pino Palladino, and just a bit of chorus.
 7.
I'd probably be willing to spring £300 for a deep impact, are they as good as their newer, cheaper rivals? Is the price justified?
It's the one "synth" pedal I haven't had, so I couldn't say. It doesn't sound like a stellar pedal to me, but you never know whether it's down to the cretin demoing it or the pedal, do you? But if you did buy one and decide it wasn't for you, you'd have no trouble getting your money back. There really aren't a lot of all-in-one options. The only others I can think of are the Digitech Bass Synth Wah - a couple of the sounds on that aren't half bad, if a bit generic, but it doesn't leave much room for getting creative - and the Boss SYB-3/5, which has more features than the BSW but for me didn't sound quite as good, or track as well. Maybe a few components might be a better idea, like...
I get some HUGE sounds out of my OC2 > Mammoth > CEB3 > MF101 > DL4 rig. Perfect for noisecore stuff!!
That sounds really flexible, but well over £250. I've got an OC-2, Mammoth and an exp.-controllable filter (Meatwad) on my board, but the main reason I bought the Octavius Squeezer was because it was impractical to tweak my filter settings so much between songs. Even with the Squeezer though I've kept those other pedals, and I've kept the BMS, but the more patches I create on the Squeezer the more redundant things are getting. If the mooted exp. pedal control arrives in a future firmware update my Meatwad might become surplus to requirements. That would be weird... Still need something ring-moddy to robot up my sounds sometimes, and I'm waiting for a good formant filter to replace the Bassballs (TWA Little Dipper still isn't out yet).
 8. Mick Karn turns up on one of his albums, can't remember which. Pino Palladino's on I, Assassin, can't remember who else played for him. Quite a lot of quality fretless people though, it seems.
 9.
I'm in the market for a synth pedal, but it's an area i've got little experience in, I had an Ibanez sb7, which i liked, but i defintley want something with more versatility. I've got quite a budget (£250 max) so i'm looking at the high end (not quite as high as an octavius squeezer though). I'm sorely tempted by a deep impact, I've wanted one since i first heard of them, but are they worth the exoribtant money? Is there anything newer that's better and cheaper? I'd appreciate any advice
Deep Impacts tend to go for £300-350 when they turn up. The Korg G5 is usually about half that, but I only found one sound I liked on it and it's huge. If you've got £170-ish for a G5 go demo a Bass Micro Synth instead, it's a really good pedal. It won't do pure waveforms but it mimics that classic Moog bass sound surprisingly well, and does a bunch of other tricks too. And its filter is just generally a bit special, nothing sounds like it. For the money I think it's a brilliant box. It depends what sort of sounds you're going for really. Can you link to some tunes for us?
 10. It looks like a half-digested Steinberger.
 11.
Oh, and yes, I guess this is also a shameless plug for my superb BB415 for sale!!!!
If I hadn't already spent this month's GAS allowance I'd have it - I need a 5'er and that's about the best "cheap" one I've seen.
 12.
Robby Takac uses the BB series and he does alright IMO
Tony Kanal was always using BB basses too. I had a fretless (think it was a BB1100S) years ago and it was a top bass.
 13. Bought his Hartke LH500. Bit disappointed because I'd convinced myself he'd have a dog before I got there and it turned out he had a cat. The cat was alright, bit aloof, y'know, cats are like that. Would've been better if it was a dog.
 14.
Has anyone ever tried to mod. a pedal? And if so is it easy, as in really easy, cause i haven't used a souldering iron for...about 4 years.
On a pedal with surface-mounted components, no, it's not easy, there's no room for ****-ups. You'd be better off getting someone else to do it. On older pedals it's often pretty easy though.
 15. Ah I miss the days of having a Korg Workstation. I had the M1, 01/W, X5, Trinity, gave them up as soft-synths improved. Actually I bought my X5 off Warren Cuccurullo's uncle. He was a mad one. Like a more dangerous-looking Groucho Marx.
 16. Apparently the Boss CS-3 with Monte Allum's mod applied is actually pretty stellar. There's a UK contact on this page if you'd need someone to do it for you.
 17.
I had it apart last night and a gut shot wouldn't be much use cos all the wiring is yellow, think a pile of yellow spaghetti
Conveniently enough, that's probably how mine's going to look.
 18. Glad to hear your expensive new bass is OK! Nightmare scenario. I keep meaning to fit strap locks to my main bass, the strap's leather ends are pretty soft and they slip off easily. Can't imagine ever not having one hand on the neck but I'm tempting fate.
 19. Gut shot? I'm thinking about building something like this.
 20. When I was 15 my mate's dad pulled out GCS' "Ain't No Bout A Doubt It" from his collection and put it on. Life was never the same again. He also had a load of old Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Modern Jazz Quartet, Joni Mitchell, The Meters, AWB, all sorts of cool stuff. He'd pick out a new record every couple of weeks and say "You might like this one", top bloke.
 21. Quick bump: I tried the cab yesterday evening when I went to buy the amp and it's a punchy little bugger, tweeter sounds good as well, it doesn't have that uber-bright nosebleed-inducing sound that most do. Cab's in good condition too, no damage to the covering that I could see. Bit of a bargain I think. Will's a gent too - drove out to the M1 to find me when I inevitably got lost.
 22.
I have always found modern Warwicks a bit on the lardy side
I should maybe point out I haven't played a Warwick newer than about 1995. I've always had older ones. Whoever mentioned technique above might have a point. If you're fretting too hard that could cause problems pretty quickly. In my experience super-skinny necks tend to cause cramp-like feelings in my fleshy thumb-drumstick area (technical anatomical name there) but have never given me wrist issues. I usually think of wrist pain being caused by gripping too hard or bending the wrist in weird ways while playing.
 23. In case anybody is put off by my remarks about the stability of the O.S. in my thread from last month: Mine is apparently faulty, and I'm the only person still having crash issues in the entire world. It's due to go back to Chunk for new guts.
 24.
Is she fit! would you be more likely to get into her knickers if you lent it?
I'm disappointed that we got to page two before this issue was raised. I only lend gear to people who I know really well, and know they look after gear. I've got one mate who can borrow anything he likes if I'm not using it, stuff always comes back filthy if it's been with him for too long but he's really careful not to cause any damage. I've also seen people borrow guitars and then lean them up against things they're going to easily slide off. Like car doors! I'm usually the one moving things other people have put down before someone has to sweep up splinters.
