1.
Surely a Paypal dispute should have been raised and he could have got his money back that way ? Is he a memeber of BC ? I was just wondering how people know the story behind it.
There have been quite a few threads posted here about the guy listing this bass. In one of the auctions he was quite forthcoming about exactly what had happened, describing the seller as 'Gnomes in the Attic' (Tune-o-matic). Basically he was sold the bass as 100% original, but when he took in to a guitar tech it became very obvious that it had had a refinish. I can only guess that by the time he actually received the bass and took it in to get looked over, it was too late to take it up with ebay.
 2.
isobaric speakers have a speaker design where two drive units are mounted in tandem usually made with subwoofers. - is from Wikipedia, but I still don't really know what that means
It just means there's a speaker that's mounted inside the cab, firing internally.
 3.
Anyone seen an LH500 under £300 please? Need a replacement after my Trace went bang!
Thomann have got them under £300 - just! http://www.thomann.de/gb/hartke_lh500.htm
 4. Very interesting. I'm not sure about their claims about revolutionary, breakthrough technology though. Don't the Schroeder 1212 use an isobaric design as well? And Linn were using isobaric designs in hifi speakers in the 70s.
 5.
The problem is that even if someone were to write a song that was spookily similar to one of Steve's guitarist's songs, you'd have to prove that they knowingly "stole" it, and didn't just coincidentally write a song that was very similar. For this to be an issue, the following things must happen: 1. The song must get intercepted 2. The person who intercepts it must like it enough to want to copy it 3. The person who intercepts it must actually go ahead and copy it 4. Make some money off of it, and... 5. Steve (or his guitarist) must find out about this. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's highly improbable. S.P.
+1 It's far more likely that any potential plagiarist would hear the stuff at a rehearsal room or (shock horror!) at a gig. As a way of nicking others material (intercepting countless emails, scanning for mp3s, listening to the material and figuring out whether or not it's a cover of a well known song you've never heard of, let alone like it) is pretty far down the list. If I wanted to to go out and deliberately nick someone's ideas I would have thought hanging around at unsigned bands gigs would be far more fruitful.
 6.
Cheers for that guys. Am I right in thinking it was towards the end of the '90's that Trace were taken over and things started to go a bit Pete Tong ?
Gibson took over late '98 if I remember correctly. Some cost cutting was supposed to have gone on, but that has never stopped people singing the praises of their V8's.
 7. Not Islington, but not so far away is Ain't nothing but... in Kingly St, W1 every Monday. http://www.myspace.com/mondaybluesjam
 8.
Bump I still wouldn't mind knowing what year this is. I've checked the serial number again and it actually reads 677/0089/1194. Now don't call me Sherlock, but does that make it a '94???????
That should make it November '94. If you ever open up the amp there should be dates on both the circuit board and inspection stickers (I say 'should be' because I mentioned this to someone before and he couldn't find any sign of either on his!).
 9. Any dc power supply capable of delivering 1A or higher should do the trick (with those pedals you're drawing about 600ma).The Diago Power Station gets a lot of thumbs up and handles up to 3A. You want to check that any pedals you use take dc power (most do), whether it's positive or negative ground (most are negative, but you'll need a separate supply for those that aren't) and the type of socket they've got Diago do adaptors).
 10.
Not sure where you live, but if you're a londoner, then your first port of call should be the bass gallery. the guys in there are happy to let you noodle about on different basses, so it's a great place to find one that suits you. I always feel slightly guilty though as if i find something i like i'll always buy it on the internet, not in the shop.
You know that they will try their best to price match in there?
 11. You might like to take a look at the Rickenfaker thread - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=270 It's quite long so you can use the search box at the bottom of the page to search within the thread. The wear you'll find will be fairly typical of any old bass - pots, frets and finish. Pots aren't a problem as they can be cleaned/replaced as necessary. The main problem you're likely to find is a high action with any of the through neck copies. The combination of the bridge design and fixed neck can make adjustment impossible unless you fancy routing under the bridge and modifying the bridge pickup surround.
 12.
yeah i think my main influence is kinda of arctic monkeys juist with a load of fills. im trying to hit that sort of sound... i was thinking about a modified squier P-bass but it only has one split coil pickup and i dont know if that would be any good...
The best answer is to try one - if it nails the sound you're looking for that's job done. Both of the Arctic's bass players used P's...
 13. Strange. I'm sure that was the same bass that was up a few days ago but calling itself a Harmony. It's sure to be pulled very quickly for using the R word in the title anyway. If you're looking for a Rickenfaker you should have a word with Nick - he's got a rather nice Maya he's trying to shift at the moment.
 14.
Tell him you're putting what you have up, if he wants to spend more of his own time and money redoing parts he's welcome to, next time he should get his stuff down before going into the studio though.
+1. It sounds like he's being impossibly anal about the whole thing. He probably won't be happy after redoing the parts either... Edit: Tell him to go and take a listen to Led Zep II. He'll lose count of the amount of fluffed notes on the guitar parts.
 15. Indie covers a fair bit of ground, but the jaguar is quite a popular option amongst our 6 string indie brethren. The bass version can be had second hand within your budget, and there seems to be a few available in the for sale section.
 16. Hey, It's iconic! Remember the sixties were the decade that taste forgot.
 17.
Vox, Burns...so damn ugly, still classic I suppose....ugly classics!
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but how can you say these are ugly! The phantom even won a design award. Though not from a bass player, obviously!
 18.
But they were never cool. The only British manufacturer who had a distinctive shape was Status, and that literally was "too modern". It looks very dated now, not in a good way. I agree that Burns probably qualify, even though their designs are based on American shapes but "wrong". What about Vox - did they make basses?
Yeah, Vox made loads of basses but are probably best know for the Phantom and the Mark IV (or teardrop as it's better known). Certainly classic shapes because they are so distinctive and recognisable, but I doubt they really hit the spot in terms of quality. I borrowed a phantom for about six months (I'm in a garage band) and wasn't overly impressed. The front pickup had been replaced with a mudbucker and sounded sweet, but the original at the bridge sounded pretty thin. Neck profile was pretty similar to a seventies Precision, but it was in severe need of shimming - which the guy I'd borrowed it off didn't want. And serious neck dive.
 19. Framus Star or the Vox Phantom?
 20.
Whoop-de-do, it's an Ibanez! Stupid me, thought it was a Melody M-6600, made in Italy. Must be losing my touch... J.
Did you clue him in? "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing."
 21. I might fancy this myself if I had £2000 spare. Or a car. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BA55-GTR-BASS-GUITAR...emZ260371056051
 22.
My flatmate has recently volunteered her services as a bass player to a friend of ours, despite the fact that she doesn't own a bass. As you can see from my sig, I own some fairly decent (IMO) gigging bass equipment, having been playing for the past 12 years or so. So far my flatmate has been practicing on my Jazz in the flat, but now wants to start taking it round to our friends flat for rehearsals and eventually use it for gigging. I've yet to question her about it as it's not been a problem so far, but I'm fairly sure she said she would play bass on the assumption that she could use my gear as and when she pleases, as I'm not currently gigging. Am I being selfish if I refuse to continue letting her use my stuff? It's fine in the flat but I'm not really happy with my stuff being taken away for gigs/prectices. It's quite quiet folky music she's playing so it's unlikely there'll be any Who-style destruction, but I'm not really comfortable letting other folk use my gear. What are other people's view on lending out their stuff? My gear's insured against 3rd party damage but why should I put up my premium by claiming in the even of some breaking? I had to work and save the cash to pay for it, so surely I'm in the right here?
Yeah, you're in the right. It's your gear to do as you please with. Personally I wouldn't mind lending out my amp (with the proviso that any damage is paid for and will result in the abrupt halt of any privileges) and would be OK about loaning the use of a bass around the flat, but there's no way I'd let a one of my babies be used in any gig/rehearsal situation.
 23.
MB1. Finished at £1102 so looks like hes made £2 on it Sooper?
Minus ebay's final price tax. If he was looking for a profit he's fallen way short of the mark!
 24. "What have I let myself in for?" Probably an acerbic comment from tBBC!
 25. I had a single reviewed in NME once which consisted almost entirely of a review of the cover (which was given over to a short story describing, amongst other things, a woman's activities with an eel ). What did they say about the band? "They sound like the eel"
