No different from Elvis taking a black blue song & playing to white people who wouldn't entertain the thought of listening to "coloured" music?

What possible difference should it make who wrote the songs? In general terms a Karaoke night is my idea of hell. However if the karaoke singers happened to be Aretha Franklin & James Brown then I'd go for the Karaoke ahead of pretty much anything else. Third one is tricky too, I was just about the right age to be quite impressed by the raw fun of the Monkees and had no idea quite how manufactured they were. A low budget biopic might just work in terms of matching the whole ethos of The Monkees. If so then I'd simply Sky+ it and watch it in my own time whilst still keeping some free time to go and see the covers band.

There has to be a case for both originals bands (without whom all new music would die) and bands who play other people's songs for the enjoyment of an audience who don;t want to be challenged. Speaking of covers bands - where would we be without the amazing musicianship and ability of the Motown, Stax & Atlantic bands and singers who pretty much all played & sang other people's songs? Or the early rock 'n' rollers like Elvis (or even the Stones) who "covered" early black blues and soul classics?

I only wish it were the case! Using a really simple example - I work in a vaguely trendy company right in the heart of London and about 3 minutes walk from Denmark Street. We have about 70 employees with an average age of mid 20's and all earning way above the average national wage. Not a single band member to be seen, couple of bedroom guitarists at best. It does feels like there are a few more bands around these days than the really horrible era of everything being produced on a sequencer and all the bass lines being played on keyboards. The more the merrier in my opinion. If only it really were the case that everyone was in a band. How wonderful it would be to live in a world without prima donna musicians telling everyone else that their playing didn't really count because it wasn't either "original" or that the only "real" music was being played by supposedly hard working "professionals".

Do you mean the background music on the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG)? If so then te easy option is just to turn it off: Services - System Setup - Sound Settings - Background Music Off - Save New Settings ^_^

If a band fancies playing for a night for beer money and they enjoy doing it and entertain people I can't really see what's wrong with it? I certainly can't see how this could possibly be devaluing music. I don't play for the sort of money your bar man spoke about but if someone called me up and asked if I wanted to play a gig without too much hassle and would give me £25 for my trouble I'd certainly do it if I had the free time. To be really honest I love playing live and would play for free now and then without a second thought.

Super nice guy - we arranged quite a convoluted three way trade very smoothly indeed!

Damn, damn, damn! So there I am, solidly transferred over to the SS camp and an advocate of that clean EBS sound. Then, by a convoluted set of circumstances, I end up owning a 20 year old Ampeg SVT 2 that looks like it's just left the shop. Was going to simply sell it on but obviously wanted to give it a try out to make sure everything was working OK. Only had 20 mins or so but it sounded just great. Clean, sharp, lovely tone and matched my NYC Sadowsky in way I would never have associated with an Ampeg. The single master volume (no 'gain' knob on these!) meant I just turned it on and played with all the EQ turned off & I was really impressed. Obviously the bastard thing weighs a ton - the shock proof Boogie case it's in isn't helping on the weight front - and I could easily see it becoming a right handful. I really don't need all this gear so know I have an [i]interesting[/i] weekend ahead when I need to try the Ampeg against my EBS (maybe mixing & matching the Ampeg & EBS cabs as well) alongside my 'reference' Euphonic & Trace V-Type + SS power amp gear

Ok, so this may be a little controversial but I really like Michele Stodart of the Magic Numbers. No clever technical stuff going on but I just love some of her ideas and the patterns she plays, really suits the band's sound and actually quite fun to play along with. First album and demos are my favourites. We played a gig once where the sound limiter was particularly responsive to high frequencies. An un-mic'd cymbal crash would set it off or the high end of an alto sax. They also had the trip wired into every single window and a set of french doors. As soon as it got warm and people opened a window the power to he stage would cut!

Might be worth starting and finishing with the coves that people in the audience might know & keep the originals in the middle of the set - good old "warm 'em up, back off a little & leave 'em wanting more" theory Oh, & don't tell them the ones you've written yourselves are originals, make them think they've missed a trick or two & keep 'em guessing :brow:

Picked up a baby Mark 1x12 combo recently for rehearsal use and really haven't been sure about the overall sound compared to my Euphonic gear. It's great that it's so tiny & weighs so little but I was really struggling to get a clean crisp sound from it. All seemed way to bottom end for me - which was surprising given the diminutive dimensions. However I actually got a chance to use it properly last night up against a live drummer & low end keys etc. Seemed to fall really nicely into the overall band mix and after a few tweaks, cut the bass a little, added some upper mids & fiddled with one of the sound contours, I got a really nice tone from it. Started playing some disco with a pick on my Lakland JO and the guitarist asked me to turn it down a little as it was slicing the top of his head off - and it was only turned up to about 1 on the master (out of 5 notches)! Feeling much happier with it now
