1. Damn, damn, damn! So there I am, solidly transferred over to the SS camp and an advocate of that clean EBS sound. Then, by a convoluted set of circumstances, I end up owning a 20 year old Ampeg SVT 2 that looks like it's just left the shop. Was going to simply sell it on but obviously wanted to give it a try out to make sure everything was working OK. Only had 20 mins or so but it sounded just great. Clean, sharp, lovely tone and matched my NYC Sadowsky in way I would never have associated with an Ampeg. The single master volume (no 'gain' knob on these!) meant I just turned it on and played with all the EQ turned off & I was really impressed. Obviously the bastard thing weighs a ton - the shock proof Boogie case it's in isn't helping on the weight front - and I could easily see it becoming a right handful. I really don't need all this gear so know I have an interesting weekend ahead when I need to try the Ampeg against my EBS (maybe mixing & matching the Ampeg & EBS cabs as well) alongside my 'reference' Euphonic & Trace V-Type + SS power amp gear
2.
£750 for a new Fafner? And you are moaning! RRP on an HD350 is more than that!
Actually it ended up costing me £800 due to postage and currency fluctuations Funnily enough the dealer that sold it to me had listed the Fafner at the wrong price and it was coming up less than an HD. However he said he'd honour the price as he'd advertised it. Given that he was in another country I though this was pretty decent, I have to assume he still made a profit on the sale though.
3.
What are they doing out of the kitchen long enough to learn bass?
That's one of the things I quite like about all of them, a bit on the large side, lots of hair, no posing fashion stuff & churning out great little pop songs Found another live version of the same song with much better sounds from Glasto a few years back : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYtZ5LNd8tQ
4. Ok, so this may be a little controversial but I really like Michele Stodart of the Magic Numbers. No clever technical stuff going on but I just love some of her ideas and the patterns she plays, really suits the band's sound and actually quite fun to play along with. First album and demos are my favourites. Here she is playing live : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYTocYnxWYE Not particularly fluid and the tone is bit dead but something about the bass line just does it for me PS - if you want to hear the 'produced' version of the same song it's here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-7Japu-MdU...feature=related
5. I have two of the Euphonic iAmp 350 combos and would sell either of them if I received a good offer for sale or trade. The second one is older than the first but still in great condition (I can take pics if anyone's interested). Here's some revised pricing options: iAmp350 in the pics £500 iAmp350 that's a bit older £450 CXL 1x12 £300 iAmp 1 with CXL £775 iAmp 2 with CXL £725 Happy to consider basses, guitars, rack cases, blah, blah in PX
6. Bloody typical eh? I spend 2 months hunting for a used HD350, eventually crack & stump up £750 for a new Fafner instead & the week after it arrives an HD appears. Anyone want a Fafner that's not even been removed from its box yet? Seriously - the HD is great piece of kit, real Pro quality from everything EBS make.
7.
I agree - sometimes when i'm playing with my setup at home, i get a little dissatisfied with the sound, but as soon as i'm practicing with the band, i remember exactly why i bought it in the first place Btw, those filters are extremely powerful, especially in a band environment - i have both at 9 o'clock, works great for me, but you may find different settings suit your setup better....
Funnily enough I haven't played with both filters on at once - have tried each in isolation. I'll have a blast with them together next week
8. We played a gig once where the sound limiter was particularly responsive to high frequencies. An un-mic'd cymbal crash would set it off or the high end of an alto sax. They also had the trip wired into every single window and a set of french doors. As soon as it got warm and people opened a window the power to he stage would cut!
9. Might be worth starting and finishing with the coves that people in the audience might know & keep the originals in the middle of the set - good old "warm 'em up, back off a little & leave 'em wanting more" theory Oh, & don't tell them the ones you've written yourselves are originals, make them think they've missed a trick or two & keep 'em guessing :brow:
10. Picked up a baby Mark 1x12 combo recently for rehearsal use and really haven't been sure about the overall sound compared to my Euphonic gear. It's great that it's so tiny & weighs so little but I was really struggling to get a clean crisp sound from it. All seemed way to bottom end for me - which was surprising given the diminutive dimensions. However I actually got a chance to use it properly last night up against a live drummer & low end keys etc. Seemed to fall really nicely into the overall band mix and after a few tweaks, cut the bass a little, added some upper mids & fiddled with one of the sound contours, I got a really nice tone from it. Started playing some disco with a pick on my Lakland JO and the guitarist asked me to turn it down a little as it was slicing the top of his head off - and it was only turned up to about 1 on the master (out of 5 notches)! Feeling much happier with it now
11. Surprised to see it's only 100W - unless it's a typo and should read 1000W
12. Anyone seen the new Marshall Lemmy signature stack? There's a PDF review here: http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/file...92lemreview.pdf Loads money but I but it's a hoot to play
13. After a very interesting bout of trading on something else that looks like it's going to involve a bass leaving me for a 12 string guitar that's going to someone who's going to sell a head & then give me cash plus a cab - I'm definitely open to offers of trades for just about anything really Gotta be better than the dreaded EBay
14. I'd always loved the look of Rickys and bought an old well played '73 on a bit of a whim. Tried to get on with it but just couldn't get to grips with it. Only really worked for me playing with a pick. Since buying it it's hardly been out of the case I'm afraid. Needs the nut replacing which I need to get sorted before I'll sell it but as soon as I get round to that it'll be up for sale.
15. There's an Urge 1 on EBay right now - might help to give a guide price: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Urge-I-Stu-Ha...id=p3286.c0.m14 Colour is a rather 'fetching' raspberry though
16.
Talking of the instrumental versions of some of their greatest hits, some years ago now I purchased all the available instrumental versions of tracks such as 'God Only Knows' form the Apple iTunes website which are absolutely stunning. They are exactly the same as the full blown tracks excluding the vocal only. I've also got: 'Sloop John B' 'Catch A Wave' 'Do It Again' 'Wouldn't It Be Nice 'Help Me Rhonda' and... the superlative 'California Girls' Highly recommend getting them as they are true gems and a great opportunity to hear the track less vocals in great and womderfully enjoyable detail. Just some thoughts... Ciao Ian
There's loads of samples of the various instrumental only or vocal only versions on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Sounds-Session...p;sr=8-8#disc_1
17. Not sure if this helps - but for those Euphonic aficionados out there it may make a difference to know that the iAmp350 is the later model. I think it's the last version before they took it out of production. I actually own two of these and the later model has 'cleaner' graphics and, I think, an upgraded fan. Not sure of other mods. I removed it from the cab today and it really is immaculate, not a mark on the amp anywhere and looks like new
18.
Lakland Darryl Jones with Aero pups - classic 70s jazz sound IMO
That's good - I've just bought exactly one of these
19.
For bass, I like SS and active. That makes me the bastard spawn of Satan I presume?
Me too Obviously old Satan has been spraying his seed around a bit!
20. I'd spotted the semi as well & quite like the looks: Kinda Rickyish in places. £235 for a 4 or 5 string - would love to know what they are like. As an owner of a Korean Lakland I'm certainly not going to assume that because it's Korean it's rubbish!
21. Forgot to add one thing I always take with me - my little, first series, Sadowsky outboard pre-amp. Means I can get a decent signal into something if my amp goes down. it's never actually happened but ya never know. . . . . .
22. Slightly off topic - I went to a gig recently and had seen 10 lead guitars and 3 basses after only 5 songs! Bloody American session musicians backing a touring singer. Lots of technical ability but lacking in any charisma. God knows why they needed to chane after every song. Anyway - back on topic. I've never taken a spare bass to a gig but I do take simple stuff like strings, a basic tool kit & spare leads. The worst thing that happened to me once was that my main lead failed just before the encore. All I had left was a really short length of patch cable. Had to strap my bass up around my neck and play rammed up against the amp & cab! Always have an, easily accessible, spare lead with me now. . . . . .
23. Have you heard the boxed Cd set at all? Apart from the mono & stereo mix versions there's a whole album of just the vocals (some of which are just amazing) and also one of just the instrumental parts. A few interesting out-takes and stuff as well.
24. Not sure it'll be a huge upgrade on what you already have? Unless you're looking at this as a second bass?
25. A guitarist mate of mine has just asked me to find him a decent bass for under £200 - he suggested a Squier but I think this ought to be better! I'll have a word with him but he's in Portugal at the moment so may take a while to respond. May also depend on how "traditional" he wants to be!
