I saw him on the Manring/Lawson/Lester tour in Reading and he was mindblowing. Even sat six feet away, I couldn't work out where all that sound was coming from He didn't do "Enormous Room" in his set, but someone must have asked about it as he then played it afterwards in the middle of signing things. Cheers Alun
South Street Arts Centre by any chance? If so - I was there too
Kustom. Good enough for Creedence Clearwater. Turn up the bass on "Fortunate Son": Nice. Subthumper's 3x15 sounds a lovely but elderly beast. You could always recondition it. Kustom's web-site only shows a retro style combo for guitar, not bass. However, they do a nice fat 2x15 bass cabinet with horn. Only a little over 100lbs! that's what all that bass practice is for; lifting cabs. Just to leave you with a little enthusiasm, try the following link - http://www.thelizardswebsite.com/profilerandy.htm There's a batch of Six beautiful Kustom 3x15's and and one's in blue. They're only taller than that little matter of an Acoustic 360/1 in the left hand corner. Enjoy your search.
How cool is that array of amps & basses: Pictured from left to right Viellette 34" scale 6 string bass passive Atlansia 36" scale 6 string bass active Pagelli 36" scale 6 string bass synth bass Triggs Arch Top "Jazz box" 36" scale 6 string bass passive Wal 36" scale 6 string bass active Fo-lembic (Fodera/Alembic hybrid) 36" scale 6 string bass passive Fleischman (1 of 2) 36" scale 6 string bass passive Fodera (1 of 2) 36" scale 6 string bass passive Fodera - Anthony Jackson Contrabass 36" scale 6 string bass passive Fedden/Fodera all lucite (lucite neck) 36" scale 6 string bass synth bass Fodera 36" scale 12 string bass passive Carl Thompson 36" scale 6 string bass passive Azola Arch Top "Jazz Box" (1st one) 34" scale 6 string bass passive Specter 36" scale 6 string bass active JayDee "Roadie" 36" scale 6 string bass active Ritter 36" scale 6 string bass passive Amps from left to right Acoustic 360 Rickenbacker Transonic Kustom 3X15 White Kustom 3X15 Silver Kustom 3X15 Green Kustom 3X15 Red "Kronos" 3X15 Gold Kustom 3X15 Black Kustom 3X15 Blue Plush 3X15 silver Rickenbacker Transonic Acoustic 360 Shame about the name - being called Randy Pratt would be a bit of a disadvantage

I saw Manring last time he was over and he was awesome. Started out playing his tiny little Vinnie Bass and I couldn't believe the sounds he got from it - inspired me to track one down & buy it!
Perhaps, if reloaded with modern drivers. Those used in the original weren't much, but in 1968 what was? Also, their first generation SS circuits were powerful but unusably noisy if you set the treble knob above 12:00, and even full off the hiss was still quite obvious.
I seem to remember reading that Jamerson turned the bass up really high and cut the treble - what with dead as a doornail flatwounds as well it must have packed quite a low down punch
There's a shop near me that has a 3x15 one of those. Makes an ampeg 8x10 look a tad lacking in stature. I've no idea how you'd move it. Cheers Just
Sounds like fun, might make a great reggae cab

Just browsing around today and spotted some pics of classic Kustom cabs - I'd love a naugahyde combo - ideally in blue - or even a full on 2x15 Kustom are still making bass gear but no tuck 'n' roll re-issues as far as I know
MB1. ............Hi Ho Silver Lining?
Poor old Jeff - that's going to haunt him to the end of his days isn't it Mind you, maybe he earnt enough from it to fund his less 'commercial' career - which is pretty much everything else he's recorded

As I've just stuck another bass up for sale I thought I'd give this one a bump and a price drop - yours for around the £1,200 mark or make me an offer Would consider something of lower value as a PX. Couple of pics transferred here as well now - the guy in the pics is Randy Hope-Taylor (just to help prove that it was once his!):

OK - so I may be tempted to part with this again as I've now taken the 'leap' up to 5 strings and my various 4 stringers aren't being played at all and it seems a shame to have such a stunning bass not being used more often. I'm not desperate to sell but thought I'd stick a feeler out to see if anyone might be interested in it. Could be up for a PX for a 5 string - particularly a Sadowsky but I do have my eyes on something already so would need to be a bit special to tempt me. It's a '95 genuine NYC Sadowsky in superb condition with usual Sadowsky electronics and a D-Tuner. Sounds amazing and lovely to play - as well as look at A genuine NYC with a special finish for the price of a new Metro? More pics added in post 31

Must be reaction against the size / weight I reckon in this age of tiny Neo equipped cabs?

I have a couple of these in different lengths, definitely my fave strap for gigging or long practice sessions. I'm sure I paid less than £25 in a shop though - Ebay ain't what it used to be eh!
There is something quite satisfying though about practising on the sofa with eight speakers firing sound at you. It's a good job the guy in the flat below me is a bit deaf!
I was vaguely amused to open the box of my new Fafner to discover it came with a set of nice bright yellow 'industrial style' ear plugs Maybe I'll give them to my neighbours. . . . . . . Those SWR cabs are definitely a lot of fun. I've only tried one in a shop at lowish volume but it certainly had some oomph behind it
Man i love to watch/listen to these gospel cats. I read on one of his posts, that hes been playing for only 6-7 years!!!!???..He over plays sometimes but who cares. Is it something about worship that does it?? The slapping at 1.20 is so fresh. Thought i would share. I have one of these: Lovely little thing to play, great range of tones and problems with deep low notes (which some people sometimes worry about with small bodied basses). Balance is perfect and you can happily play for hours without any fatigue. I do suffer from the 'misplaced fretting hand' problem though. I generally use the Zon at home whilst learning new songs and then my Lakland JO at rehearsal. I often find my hand falling a whole two frets out if I'm not really concentrating. I think it's the way it hangs on the strap rather than some subconscious stuff going about the lack of headstock though

OK, so the Flea is back up for sale. I'd decided to hang on to it after a couple of sales fell through fairly late in the day but realised that I've only played it once in the last month & it just seems such a waste to be sitting quietly in a case! I'd had two firm offers at £1,300 (but these were the ones who were unable to complete) and quite a few tentative feelers at £1,200 so thought I'd split the difference at £1,250 if anyone is interested
http://www.lakland.com/skyline_vs_us.htm The Skylines are superb instruments.
I'd say that the "average" Lakland Skyline arrives in a better state of set up than an American Standard Fender. Nothing against Fender stock instruments but I've certainly come across a few that didn't feel properly finished. Every Skyline I've tried has been absolutely beautifully finished. I have a couple of much more expensive US hand finished basses and I think my two Skylines easily match them for fit and finish. One of the really important things about the Skylines is that (part from the really early ones I think) they have the same electronics as the US series. These are fitted in the USA by Lakland when each bass is properly checked over before final shipping. In this case the original DJ's had the Aero pickups fitted. Recent ones have mostly had stock Lakland pickups. Nothing desperately wrong with Lakland's own pickups but the Aeros tend to be preferred by most people and will definitely add some value as they are the ones originally specified by DJ himself. Definitely no need to be concerned about the original manufacture in Korea
