Anybody else ever been engrossed in a track, then suddenly thought "Where the hell am I? What am I doing? Sh*t! What comes next?!"
I get that every gig, all the time.....I can never remember parts, song structures, find it difficult to count bars. I don't think my finger memory is much cop because whenever I play something it's always a bit different from the last time.
-
Bit pricey if you ask me, still a fine looking bass.
-
Posture, posture, posture...that's what I was told, by a body person. I'm still guilty of slumping over my bass sometimes though.
-
Put your anger and frustration into your bass......form an all bass trio or something...call me for the 4 cos that's all I can handle you can play the mad instrument you have and get another player in between....I'm just trying to make you laugh mate... don't sell anything, don't hang up your bass for the summer, keep laying it down in your covers band, stay out there, cos if you don't....then you'll truly disappear.

I'd like to be able to get a good recorded bass tone but as yet, never managed it. If I could have my live sound on recordings I'd be well happy....I rely on new strings, a tight midrange sound with some compression is what I try and aim for.

The only way to improve dexterity, stamina, strength, skill, etc is good old fashioned practice...isn't it??? Just had a quick look at the Powerball site....looks dangerous to me. I can understand a bit of fun and a laugh but to suggest it can help in tackling advanced playing techniques is utter madness....G********r? not even worth a mention in my book.
Where are they? Really....Where the f*** do they hang? Because Ive been looking for them nationwide, and all I find is different levels of c**ts. The older Gen round here just want to play covers,or wont do ANYTHING unless its for money..seriously..the love of playing, the challenge of writing has gone. Its utterly dead. I was chatting to the Good Dr (Dave) the other day about originals bands have no stamina they blow out at 1/2 to 1hr onstage,I can keep going all evening, and get up and do it again...night after night...Hell Ive earnt it..the 4 walls I own has been mostly paid by music. Ive got the transport, the gear.....the 'Hair',the knowledge,as it were...I learn fast,I play tight and well (ok..I THINK its well, but yourself aint the great barometer for how good you are). And after near 2 decades of playing, its just become a job... How does Modification affect the price of a Yankee P Bass?
There's more tripe than caviar....deal with it

It happens to good players....can't have a star in the band now can we

Great bassists who have had a negative effect on modern bass?
It depends on what you want to call an ERB in the Electric Guitar sense. I go on the 7+,as 6 is really not unusual to see these days.Early 90s really.
True, I suppose there are a good many players using 6...7+ too probably...anyway back on topic, bass player that has had a negative effect on modern bass???? Can't think of any really, thing is I don't think of it as negative if a bass player is doing something different...like I mentioned earlier , people focus on the small things, that's the negative part. -

So it's ERB's as we know them today...around 86? and Low C as Jennifer mentioned 66? -
Negative effect on Bass? Probably Leo Fender,he started the problem.
Just out of interest.... genuine question, who actually manufactured the first ERB? -
I was always of the impression that Jaco set things back acceptance wise for Electric bass and Jazz... he effectively got us relegated to Fusion.
Nowt wrong with fusion -
Both were not my cup of tea but the Billy sheehan clip i found particularly pointless, for me there are bass players and people who play BASS, personally i am quite content to provide the bottom and rattle a few glasses off the shelf. Bill may have some amazing dexterity and advanced technique but i have no desire at all to emulate him. If you really want to solo this in my opinion is more like it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsyO5BekKts...feature=related wait fast forward to about 2 minutes until jack lets rip Enough of what i do like, back on topic. For me any bassist who plays 7,9 10 + string basses. 5 stringers i get, but i feel people who need that many strings might be better suited to another instrument perhaps piano? so for me any combination of solo 'bass' with ultra high speed tapping artificial harmonics which you often see on ERB's. If you define bass by the frequency range and the role it plays musically surely these players are no longer bassists in the true sense but occupy a new role. Before any shoots me down in flames i appreciate the skill of people like dood and ARGH who can play these beasts but if i wanted to be Hendrix i would play a Stratocaster not a jazz.
All I used the clips for was to try and point out that Jaco wasn't overly technical compared to, say,...Billy who uses huge amounts of technique.....just something onehappybunny mentioned about players being responsible for encouraging technique for techniques sake but I don't think players like Sheehan etc can be blamed for that. If you look further the tech players are in fact, real bass players. -

If it's tech solo stuff we're talking....then this to me is super technical. I love Bill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRuOQtg-pJ0 I can't see how this is as technical: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH2T-RjhyLY -
Jase, trust me... by my (extremely low) standards he's VERY technical
ok, maybe I worded it wrong... I mean there's stuff to listen too in his material, other than the solo stuff we see/hear, as there is with the other players mentioned. -
Jaco Pastorius... ducks, and runs for cover  ... obviously very, very talented but helped encourage the bunch of followers who seem more interested in technique-for-technique-sake
I don't get the Jaco thing....I don't think he was that technical at all, talented in bass playing, choosing the right parts to play and writting but a tech whizz on the bass I'm not so sure. -

I think what tends to happen with all of the players mentioned and others, is people concentrate on a very small part of a particular players technique or signature tone/ approach, rather than looking further into what the player has to offer. -
I don't really listen to punk these days although I loved the Stranglers and the Clash when I was a kid. The bass player with Frank Zappa for the latter years of his bands is what I can only describs as a punk bassist. Absolutely superb bass player massively energetic and very musical. If you haven't heard him check him out.
You talking about this guy Jake? http://www.cidanka.nl/keneally/stbp0397.htm
