Which are the largest and smallest stages you've ever played on?
Jase replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've been lucky enough to play quite a few large venues, indoor and out, probably one of the smallest was a chap who hires bands to play in his house, he has a bar, beer garden and it's all on a very small scale, he and his business pals get together, order food in and expect to be entertained, lovely chap, tiny gig, big wages One other thing with small intimate venues.....I find them nereve racking as hell! -
I was under the impression this was an equal rights forum? Who said boobage? Ive got all the boobs a man (or girl) could ever need!
It is...but this was the thread title: Whats ya poison girls?, What kinda music do y'all love to play?
-
Well, us chaps seem to be hijacking the ladies thread here. What are we like?
WHAT!!!??? I have kids???????? why did no one tell me!!! - I feel an Austin Powers *YEAH BABY* coming on. *One in every country* lol
Aha! One in every country? So world domination in the lower register has begun.

How many of the doodettes play ERB's then?
There was a thread a while back 'calling all girls' (ahhh see, I can even use song names in new posts.. a bit like Gold Member.. but thats another story..) asking our female populous to raise their metaphorical hands. I wonder how many new female members we have had since? Need more to balance things a bit eh!
Aye, we need that balance....then we WILL be able to take over the world :brow:

Why not give Larry a ring......his number is on the myspace page somewhere http://www.myspace.com/hartkesystems

Just wondering......how many female members are there on BC....Anyone know?
-
Good topic! Just made me realise how much I actually play/practice unamplified.....loads!!, unless I have to learn a cover or record/write some original bass parts, in which case it would be headphones.
Funny how as well in the UK as in Belgium the same problems and topics surface...doubts about playing, commitment, covers yes or no...? It's the same thing everywhere I guess... whatever happened or happens I still play bass.
Hi wombatboter, So how would you describe the live scene in Belgium?
These new Hartke heads look like great designs for very affordable prices. I suspect the preamp is based on the classic Fender/Alembic/etc tone stack with all passive EQ where 'flat' is ~2, 10, 2 on bass, mid, treble. Alex
I heard the LH500 was kind of Alembic in tone....clean. ...and thanks chaps, I've never looked at volume knobs/pots in this way at all
I also know where there is a 5 string USA Jazz deluxe for sale for 450, shame I can't do the 5 string thing
Ahh, Jazz Deluxe, they sound awesome, the necks are great, I couldn't get on with the "new" slimline, sporty type body though but still, a really well made bass.
I'm hmming and ahhing about it, I'll wait for him to reply, I would only really want it if its got a maple board otherwise I will probably take the money and get a stingray. I'm not sure about the G&L as its a 5 ver and I can't really get my head round them
Whatever you do, 3 good offers there!....I know what you mean about 5 strings........madness
I have had my warwick up on Gumtree and have had an offer of £550 for it which I think isnt bad for a streamer LX 4. However I have also been offered a virtually brand new US fender Jazz with S-1 switch in mint condition (I have no idea what an S-1 switch is??????) inc full flight case and another offer of a virtually brand new G& L tribute L2500 plush cash what do you think my best option would be. I only have one bass being the warwick so I will need another one anyway. What d'ya think? and whats an s-1 switch?
Take the Jazz

The trouser flapping remark is quite true.....I used it on 3/10 and I'm sure my trousers were being hit by the sound You lost me on logarithmic?????

Well, I went with the HA3500 in the end, even though I wasn't to keen on an EQ....tried it last night and it's very good, didn't use much in the way of EQ, maybe a little midrange boost, that was about it. Being able to mix tube and SS was good too! One thing that puzzles me....it's so much more powerful than my HA4000...punchy, tight and clean....how does that happen, 350watts flooring 400watts?
Will there be a ball pit? Please, say there will be a ball pit. Helter skelters? Ice cream factory? Paper hats on birthdays?

Couldn't agree more, Jase. What we need is some kind of licencing system. I can't believe that just anybody can buy an instrument and start having fun with music. Don't these people realise that mediocre cover bands want to be paid more money????? The nerve of these people with 'guitars' forming 'bands'. But we need some kind of authority who has the power to decide who is allowed to play music. Who could have the moral authority to stop our fair venues being 'littered' with bands, driving down the vital expenses of Mustang-Sally-playing pub rockers? Perhaps you, Jase, could be our arbiter of taste?
Thank you very much, I shall start by building "fun venues"

You can't beat a venue full of carpet.

I'd go for a bass without a doubt. I'm not really well up on amps, I know what amps work for me and what top names are about but ask me anything about them and it's always..."I'm not really sure" Actually I was gutted a few months ago, had the chance to try an Ampeg SVT valve monster with an 8x10.....just didn't do it for me, I was so annoyed, thought Ampeg was the one for me...well, that particular model wasn't. BASS!
Unfortunately I can't agree. I only wish it were the case! Using a really simple example - I work in a vaguely trendy company right in the heart of London and about 3 minutes walk from Denmark Street. We have about 70 employees with an average age of mid 20's and all earning way above the average national wage. Not a single band member to be seen, couple of bedroom guitarists at best.
Must be great to be a musician in Denmark Street
-
I have nothing against cover bands whatsoever....I'm in one! I'm also involved in an original project. I just whinge about the good covers bands and the original bands having to put up with the sh*te! Because somewhere along the way somebody told these "bands" they were good! I'd love to find out what fool was resopnsible for that.
I think my main point is that when I go to a gig, as a musician, I am watching them play and enjoying that experience, and thinking "god I wish I was that good" or "god don't they sound good". Some gigs I go to, there will be a band that has a pretty continual sound. Now, I know that songs can sound different to each other, even if the sound is kept exactly the same, but without some contrast in sound, I feel that it all kind of merges into one, and this is where audiences get bored. I'm not saying every bassist needs to start gigging with 25 pedals, but I am saying that variety in tone is very important IM(not so)HO, and the most effective way of acheiving contrast in sounds is using pedals/footswitchable rackmount pre-amps/whatever. The contrast that YOU hear when playing a bit lighter/harder with/without a pick over the bridge/neck is pretty much negligable by the time it gets to the ears of the audience, and so I recommend effects etc to exaggerrate the contrast in sounds, therefore (hopefully) keeping the audience's attention. Obviously i'm probably wrong as always, but i'd rather you read it thinking "he may have a small bit of a point here" rather than "what a twat - he wants a keyboard player!".
I had a listen to your stuff on myspace, the band sound really good!......I can understand where you're coming from when you mention tone and contrast and I thought there were some great examples of that in your tracks, I'm just wondering if the audience actually look that far into it, would they really mind if the bass was straight when you come to a chorus or climax in your songs, because I think your band could do that regardless of tone changes on bass. Not slagging what you do at all.....I enjoyed it, just trying to be constructive
Well I've spouted long and often on this subject on this forum as it comes up often because bands think their talent should be paid for and have no idea how real world economics work. It matters no one jot how many people are in your band. The ONLY thing that matters is how much clear profit the bar makes after paying the costs of the evening. The six piece is probably on his case 'cos you get £50 per man and they'd like £50 per man too .. His budget allows for £150 for entertainment. You choose if you want to play there or not. So ...... to fix this you have to change the balance of power. You have to have landlords asking you to play their pub. In simple terms you have to pull a big crowd. Nothing else does the trick. Nothing else will get you booked at a decent rate, whatever you consider that to be. If you don't promote you band as hard as you can - papers, posters, word of mouth, flyers, street team, website, myspace, facebook, mailing list and, most importantly, a brilliantly entertaining show when you play - you are destined to always play wet floor toilets for crap money, if you can get gigs at all. It's easy to move up the scale, if you are entertaining and put the promotion work in. It's also easy to blame the bar managers when the reason you don't get paid well is because you don't pull the punters. That, after all, is why bars have live music.
Tis a good point OG...........But what I reckon really devalues live music ( nothing to do with OG ).......the amount of utter sh*te bands that are out there, the amount of bands that'll play for bugger all, the amount of bands that shouldn't even be out there!!! The live music scene is littered with "bands" everyone's in a band...everyone's got a guitar
