1. If you just can't get on with the sound, then by all means try and sell/exchange it, but I really wouldn't trade it straight up for a Thumb. Don't get me wrong, I love Warwicks, but as others have aluded to, the market is such that Warwicks are going very cheaply at the moment - in fact, you've picked a perfect time to be buying Warwick. Your Sei is more desirable (I think) in the second hand market, so as everyone else has suggested, you'd be best trying to sell it and then buying a Warwick afterwards. You'd more than likely get a second hand Thumb BO for £700-800, whereas you've got a good chance of getting £1500 if not more for your Sei. Good luck with it!
2.
I just listened to it on YouTube.... what a dreadful song
Woah... hold on a second! Sounds like someone's stopped believing. Take that back sir! I'll not stand for any bad-mouthing of the mighty Journey on here or anywhere... As for the bass sound, perhaps you just need to pray to the gods of AOR, so that they might bless you with a bass sound half as astounding as Ross Valory's...
3. Here's the evidence... I'm the goon to Mr Claypool's right...
4. I'm definitely interested in the 104HF... ...unfortunately, I'm just about to go on holiday for 3 weeks, so can't commit to anything till early November. If it's still available then, I'll get in touch. In the meantime, have a bump on me...
5. Saw this post literally as I was about to shut down my computer at work and leave for the day... ...lucky I did as I managed to get down to it. Did anyone else get down there? What a great movie! Seriously recommend it - really funny and just a joy to watch. Not really any bass player humour, but will definitely appeal to anyone who's been in a band. Got to briefly meet Mr Claypool himself and got a photo/autograph. Awesome evening all round!
6. I completely agree with the point about taking the time to say hi and introduce yourself to the other bands. That's just common courtesy. Particularly if you're sharing gear, it's pretty much mandatory to discuss with your conterparts in the other bands who's going to use what and anything specific they should know about the amp/kit that is being shared. Though I don't take exception if bands don't come bounding up to me all chatty, because ultimately, people can be shy and nervous, particularly in a gig environment. There's a difference between not making an effort because you're shy and just being aloof. I certainly have no problem with the former. With regards to other bands watching each other, I don't see an issue if headline bands don't watch support bands and vice versa. Having been in both situations, I can empathise with either. More often than not I'll try and spend a bit of time watching a headliner or support, depending on what position I'm on on the bill, but if I'm supporting, far from home and have to work the next day, I'm going to try and skip off as early as possible, so that I'm not slumped asleep on my desk the next day. That may seem selfish, but it's a necessity - if I lose my job, I've no money to fund my musical pursuits. Similarly, I'll try and check out some of the support bands when I'm headlining, but more often than not and particularly when it's a week night gig, there'll be limited time to have something to eat, warm up and get prepared for the gig. If getting all that done means I have to miss one of the support bands, then unfortunately, that's going to happen. I don't think it's arrogant to try and play the best gig you can - ultimately, that's what I'm focused on when I play live. It's not that I think I'm better than the other bands, it's simply that I take playing live very seriously and want to always do the best I can.
7.
Cheers. I'll be playing selected shows on the Opeth tour too
So it's official then Steve? Good work sir - that must be literally a dream come true! I'll definitely have to get a ticket for the London show, assuming it hasn't sold out yet.
8. Goddamn! That's actual sex, carved out of raw bubinga and wenge. The sculpted headstock genuinely arouses me...
9. Just got a new digital camera... so I can finally contribute to this thread! My little piece of green and black goodness...
10. Good Very competent at reading music Have a good knowledge of theory Love playing in odd time signatures Can slap, but very seldom do Have a fairly decent groove and can sit back on the beat when required Love playing live Love engaging with the crowd when playing live Not phased by poor live sound Bad Back/neck/shoulder pain Don't practice enough Terrible at picking things up by ear Mind tends to wander when playing, often getting me lost Not a huge fan of recording Not good at writing my own songs Frequently changing my mind about what bass I want Really need to learn and practice more harmony/scale studies
11.
I think that's far too kind and advocate harsher punishment for spammers.
Harsh. Harsh, but fair.
12. Damn the bastards! Good work on stemming the flow guys - must be a real nightmare. I don't think it would be unreasonable for authorities to publish the home addresses of known spammers on the internet, so that disgruntled recipients can go round their houses and cram the spammers' letter boxes full of pages from porn mags and flyers for viagra.
13. Nice... Love the finish. Good luck with the price though. As you're no doubt aware, Warwicks are very much out of favour at the moment. There was an older LX on here for ages and even at £550ish, no one was biting. There was even an old Stage II that went for something ludicrous like £600. Times are hard...
14. An interesting bit of news (if it's true). Metallica vs Fernandes If it is, perhaps we'll see him using ESP basses in the future
15. Grades definitely are good way to focus your practice, particularly if you are pushed for time. By using a syllabus, you have a pre-prepared set of goals and achievements, which, for someone with as little self-discipline as me, is easier to stick to then creating one's own practice objectives. And if you want to spend the money, you can take the test, just to prove to yourself that you can do it. And get a nice certificate, of course. If you are interested in theory, the AB Guide to Music Theory is definitely a good place to start. If you find that interesting, then maybe have a crack at some of the theory grade papers.
16. I'm in three bands, all metal - wahey! Demagogue - progressive death/thrash Lost Legion - classic/fantasy metal To-Mera - progressive metal
17.
bah - both too far for me!!! c
Lowestoft is too far from most places (I'm only saying that because I grew up there...)
18. Don't tap your foot to keep in time! Might seem obvious, but it's something I do naturally and was always getting called up for it when I used to play in orchestras. Apparently, the sound of it carries.
19.
I went into a few musical instrument shops here in Bangkok yesterday and the two that had anywhere decent instruments (a pair of Sadowsky basses in a locked cabinet for example) got VERY sniffy about me literally touching even their most basic of instruments. I immediately lost interest and walked out. I mean, with an attitude like that what's the point of even having instruments on display? Why don't they just have posters of the instruments stuck on the wall and the real basses out the back of the shop? (BTW, there's a Thai bass forum as well! Awesome!)
You didn't go into that one near Siam station, did you? I remember browsing a guitar shop near there and noticed a few decent instruments. Can't recall there being any basses that aroused my interest.
20. Good work guys! Sounds like it's going to be a great day - sadly, I have a gig that day. Well, not sad that I've got a gig, sad that it clashes with this. Hope it all goes well.
21.
I might have just got lucky, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed! If I'm honest, I'm pretty unlikely to ever buy from anywhere in London unless it's something rare or a second hand bargain, as I've got a pretty good relationship with the music shops in Norwich and they'll more than likely pricematch and order things in for me if I ask nicely. It's just nice to be able to go to a shop that already have things in stock to try out, which is what pi$$es them off! Hands up. I'm guilty. Sorry!
Are there any music shops in Norwich that have anything worth trying in stock? Last time I was in Cooke's, it was pretty dire. Admittedly, it was a while ago - I didn't think there were any other music shops in Norwich, since Academy of Sound closed.
22.
you know, flying V guitars are one of the coolest designs around. flying V basses just look wrong. same applys to semi acoustics, too. on the other hand the gibson firebird is nowhere near as cool as the thunderbird.
I'm kind of with you there - I love spikey guitars - particularly V's and BC Rich's but I just can't get into the same shapes on bass. They look cool sitting there, but I don't think they look right when someone's playing them. That Dean looks lovely - though I'd never want one myself. Strange.
23. Stuart Clayton posts on this forum and he's written a book on the subject of slap, that includes double-thumbing. Perhaps he could offer up some wisdom, if he reads this?
24.
Saw a guy at Canary Wharf underground station busking with one a few weeks back and it wasn't Tony Levin or Nick Beggs
I've seen that guy twice! Once in Waterloo station and once at Tottenham Court Road. I actually gave him some change, so impressed was I that someone was busking on a stick.
25. I know of at least one Stick player on here - I think his forum name is Stickman, funnily enough.
