1. That does look pretty darn nice. Never really considered Dean basses in the past, but that looks pretty sharp. Sometimes, you've just got to go over budget - it'll seem worth it, once you've got it, as you know it's the bass you REALLY want. I did something very similar with this several months back. I went way over budget, but am so glad I bought it. Enjoy!
2. Personally, I'd go for the 506, because I prefer the SR body shape and string spacing. Obviously you should try them both out and go for whichever one feels better. The BTB should have a tighter B string, due to the 35" scale, but will be more of a stretch (not a problem if you have big hands). That said, 17mm is still pretty tight for the spacing. The pickups may be the same, but I thought they had different pre-amps - though that may be the prestige range that I'm getting confused with. Either way, they're both quality instruments and great value for the money.
3. I highly recommend Brian Bond. He's based in Camden and does amp repair work for the Bass Gallery. He certainly knows what he's doing and managed to get rid of some annoying noise that my Trace Head was spitting out. If you're anywhere near Camden, there's also a fair chance that he'll pickup and deliver your amp to your house, as he did for me. He's also very reasonably priced and won't charge you if you he can't figure out the problem. His number is 020 7485 7065. Apologies if his details have already been posted, but he I felt he offered such a good service that I had been meaning to post my recommendation on here for a while...
4. Ah, Hamer - had to be really. RE the photo - Paul looks pretty different with his makeup off
5. Nice! I do love that Iceman shape - even better with the mirror finish! This is rather OT, but still in the theme of Kiss guitars - does anyone know what make/model of guitar Paul used on the Heavens on Fire video was? It was really pointy and had a holographic kind of effect. One of the most gloriously 80's looking guitars I've ever seen!
6. You should be able to get an Ibanez SR505 in that price range. They're not metal in a BC Rich kind of way, but their sleek curves and playability definitely lend themselves to the heavier side of things. They also have a pretty warm and mellow tone, with a decent range of sounds. I'd also suggest trying a Yamaha RBX375 - again, not too over the top in looks, but still pretty rock. A bit more of a growl, soundwise, but still pretty versatile.
7. I'm pretty sure he owns one each of all of Gene's signature basses.
8.
But for the time being I have to grin and bear classic rock & cheesy 80's pop. Ah well
If was playing cheesy 80's pop on a Status S2, I'd be grinning... with pure delight!
9. Kind of gutted I missed the London show, but now that I know Cynic didn't play for as long (and sans-Stick) I'm not so bothered. It would have been more to see Cynic - I saw them last summer and they were awesome. They had Chris Kringel playing with them then - he's an absolute monster on the bass. Didn't Sean Malone play on the new album? Has he given up on touring? Opeth are great on record, but the times I've seen them live, they've just been lacking something. Can't quite put my finger on it, but there's always been something flat and unexciting about their performances.
10. Ooo my... that really is quite sexual. That's almost exactly what I'm gassing for right now...
11.
My first ever bass was a SDGR 300FL, wish I'd never sold it. I'm very tempted by the SRX 08LTD, the black finish with red binding looks awesome, and at £229 would make a nice cheap backup bass.
Wow... that looks the absolute balls! Does anyone know if the SRX range has the same body shape/size as the SRs? Or is it a bit chunkier?
12. They do look 80's... ...which is all the more reason to get one! I'm in the early stages of saving towards one right now. Though with the world's economic situation as it is, it could be a long wait...
13. I don't think Ibanez ever used Ebony on it's SR range - it's always been Wenge or Rosewood (and maybe Maple). Though I think from this year's models, they've switched to Wenge alternative, since it's now an endangered wood.
14.
They love it in scrubs too! and here too
Let's just face it: Everybody loves it. Those who don't are in denial.
15.
That Ibanez looks mightly familiar! I'm pretty sure it now belongs to me. Did you sell it on Ebay, by any chance?
Just checked the Ebay details from the purchase - it's definitely the same bass. Small (bass)world, eh? Here's the proof....
16.
You can test it by putting the bass on, and turning 90 degrees in either direction without holding the bass. The necks in the early 4 string models were apparently quite easy to fret out with any sudden movements.
'fret out'? I'm feeling pretty dim now...
17.
do you have any problems with neck whip on the Ibby? It was an issue with the earliest 4 strings in the late 80's. I usually rate the Tobias Pro 6 if you replace the electronics and pickups which are a bit gutless. I really liked how it felt - nice slim neck and the wenge laminates sweeten the treble nicely.
What's 'neck whip'?
18.
I had a fretless TRB6 II but the neck feld like an ironing board. The other end of the spectrum was an Ibanez SR1006. One of the older bolt on ones from Japan. Slimmest neck I have ever played on. Wish I still had it, I've never seen another one like it.
That Ibanez looks mightly familiar! I'm pretty sure it now belongs to me. Did you sell it on Ebay, by any chance? Having done some research, I'm pretty sure it's actually an SR1016 - these are indeed very rare and I've not even seen another one on Talkbass. Maybe it had a very limited distribution outside of Japan? It does indeed have an absurdly slim neck profile, which makes it far easier to play than the Yamaha TRBs, for people with smaller hands.
19. Headless makes a lot of sense. An original design Sei has long been my dream instrument, but recently I've been seriously Gassing for a Status S2 5er. At £1349 for the bolt-on version, it's almost affordable... Anyone got a second hand S2 that they want to off-load to me?
20. God, that's terrifying! Glad to hear that you're still with us. I too was completely ignorant to this kind of thing. Can anyone give a simple explanation as to how this kind of thing can occur?
21.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GJu8rA1L9M I prefer this version
That probably is the definitive version
22.
Studio version here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OGzwNdTVHJo Bass fill with that sound I was on about around 1:20 & then through chorus
There you go. That's it right there. Seriously, you've got to be dead inside to not love that tune.
