What effect?
To answer your original question, if it were me I would add a chorus or phaser in one slot, another gain-based pedal, and an octaver. I'd echo what Kev says though, and overall I'd probably suggest a multi-effect initially. Good luck
I'm quite taken by the Zoom at the moment so I'll have a look at that. You'd run another OD pedal alongside the valve channel on the head? What does that bring to the party?

What effect?

Good idea, thanks. When I hear "multi-effect" I always think of the big box with five switches that each do their own thing. I hadn't thought about a programmable stomp-box. Is it still true that dedicated boxes are better than their programmable counterparts? It doesn't help that I don't really know which effect is which and what they sound like

What effect?

This is proper noob question, well, what do you expect from a proper noob and I realise that there are a million different answers and it's all subjective anyway. I've got a GE7B and I'm using the inbuilt O/D on my amp for a bit of dirt when I need it. So far both have done me well, using the EQ on the chorus or if there happens to be a bit of a solo line ( ) for a bit more presence and using the O/D all the way through if it suits the song. Our repertoire is decidedly punky, but with forays into AC/DC and ZZ Top. I've got three 'slots' on my board and I'm not scared of a little tap-dancing or using effects in our originals, what would you suggest putting on it?

5. Heehee, Pitch up and slowed down sounds weird It makes Ken Casey sound like a chipmunk on He, and also shows how busy he is on what on first listen sounds a simple song. Well, it sounded simple to me
6. Thank you, I'll try that when I get home. If I can get a handle on this then I think my confidence in learning new songs will go up. How much would you slow it down by in % (as that's the option there is)?
7. Why do you want it to age quickly? I'm not saying that you shouldn't, but why not just let it gain it's own patina and "story" instead of scruffing it up? Then when you're old and have your great grandchild pick it up you can tell them that that scrape was from that gig, and that dent was when I was too drunk to hold it properly Just MHO by the way it's your bass after all
8. I asked about learning basslines by ear the other day and I was pointed in the direction of Audacity which I then got. Has anyone any tips on how to best isolate the bassline in a track? I've tried slowing it down and messing with the equalisation but all I seem to get is a muddy mess which is worse than trying to learn from the original. Am I on the right lines or is there some other function in the program that I haven't found yet? TIA Simon
9. I rarely get to wind my amp up because I quite like being on good terms with my wife and the neighbours but when I do I can really hear my fingers sliding on the strings moving from note to note. Is this just bad techinque that I need to work on or is it a symptom of just playing far too loudly?
10. Very cool idea! I want a spare space I can use as a cupboard now Does it have a door and a light in it as well?
11. I also thought that the sharps and flats denoted the key, but that does mean you need to know which set of notes are in a key to begin with. Or I'm talking out of my backside again.
12.
...and answers a prison for oneself. Just in case you thought no one got the reference.
I don't mind if nobody gets my random references Thank you all for your advice, I'll definitely check out the Slowdowner and Audacity and take the personnel comments on board when we start looking around. I'll let you know how it goes... I daren't advertise a first gig on here or you'll all be turn up and put me off!

14. I've got an Aria Pro 5er PJ with EMG pups in it that I think is fantastic. I leave the P volume up and wind the J volume in and out depending on whether I want a thumping sound or a brighter one. It's not the greatest bass in the world and I have a sneaking suspicion that the hardware on it is worth more than the bass as a whole but it's mine and I love it! At the end of the day all of us and all basses are different, so find what you like and run with it.
15. I've got a couple of questions, as always, the second of which should maybe in Techniques, but you decide. Firstly, progressing. If you're considering giving being a band a shot at what point do you start looking for the bits you're missing and how good should you look for? My mate and I are getting more songs in our library and we can play along to the record quite happily. Our originals are lacking but we always have a bit of a jam see-what-comes-out session after our "formal" practice. Back to the point, we're starting to think about finding a drummer, but what do you look for? I think our level is going to be pub band if we're lucky, so we're not after Nicko McBrain but would we be better going for someone with live experience or all muddle in together? If we had a good drummer would it bring our playing up or would they get fed up with our lack of skills? We're good enough to not make a fool of ourselves but not brilliant if that helps, some of you have actually seen me play, but I'm better than that now! Secondly, listening. I don't seem to have the ability to work out a bassline from just listening, I can hear what it's doing and where it's going but I can't catch it. Is this innate or can it be learned? As an example I'm currently learning Upstarts and Broken Hearts by The Dropkick Murphys. I can follow the root quite happliy, but the bass isn't doing that directly. I can hear it's not doing it but I can't play it. Any advice on both or either gratefully accepted, I'd like to do at least one gig before I peg out, even if it is on my deathbed and I'm propped up with mic stands with a drip in one arm!

obbm's feedback

Ooops, I got a Speakon cable from Dave before Christmas and forgot to say how great the service and price was
17.
I'll just leave this here :
Genius, just genius
18. How many of you fill both roles of bass playing and singing? What's the best way to get started? I either lose my bass line or make a hash of the vocals when I try. I'm rubbish at singing in tune as well, but that's another thread
19. I wonder why they felt the need to refinish it and then relic it. Why not leave it as was?
20. Why won't it work? Apart from the strings rubbing the paint off, which is only a cosmetic thing anyway.
21. Cheers chap. I suspect that this is hijacking the OP somewhat, but are those Gain and Master controls a ratio or something? If it sounds nice at home will it still sound the same but louder once it gets into rehearsal or rocking it out at the Dog 'n' Duck if I leave the Gain where it is and just turn the Master up? If that makes sense
22. I'm going to dare to open this can of worms again and ask if someone can explain the controls on my MB Fusion. I have A and B Gain and A and B Master. The B channel is called "boost" in the literature, I think it engages the valves to provide a dirty overdrive as opposed to the clean A channel. If I turn the Gain B up the OD gets more pronounced, Gain A just gets louder as far as I can tell. I keep calling it Gain as that's what it says on the box, from an earlier post should it be Pre-amp Volume? My question is really do I run the Gain at full and then control the volume with the Master controls, or is there a particular ratio between Gain and Master. I suppose that the B Gain is to taste as it were, more or less OD? The manual says leave both Master controls at 3 o'clock and fiddle with the Gain controls until the required level is reached. It'll happily run at quiet practice levels or ear bleedingly loud and anything in between but I don't want to break it so I'm asking for help. Better that than the alternative
23. Steve Harris, and he's still better than me I was listening to some Less Than Jake for the first time in a while a week or so ago and Roger Manganalli is doing some nice stuff in the background, so I suppose that sort of Ska/Punk is what is really pushing me to change from playing straight 8ths to opening up my structure and I think I've got better for it. But that's only my opinion, the wife and the dog may disagree
