1. Try both.....Buy favourite.....Job done. Unless of course the branding is important to you.
 2. I'll just lay out for a beat or two and get my bearings. Fiddling about can sometimes work unless there is a key change or whatever..then it can just be a train wreck. If I balls up badly I'll hold my hand up to it.
 3.
Something about in -ear monitoring. If the soundman suddenly turns up the monitor volume without warning, does the volume correspondingly rise in your ears ? are your ears vulnerable to a clumsy hand on the monitor volume control ? pardon ?
Yeah. Although most systems have a volume control on the receiver, and most wireless ones have a limiter. I use a wired system which has an volume control on it which is not set too loud. To be fair though, the soundman must be a bit of of dick if he fiddles with your monitor volume.
 4.
If you're wearing in -ear monitors, can you still hear the rest of the band clearly ? How do you know when you've reached the safe limit for in-ear volume levels ?
You can hear the band fine with in ears......most times it's even better because you can have your own mix of whatever you want. Safe limit? I don't know.......I just turn the volume up to where it's clear but not uncomfortable.
 5. Great post Nige. As much as I like gear,it means dick if you don't know how to play it or have anything to say on it. I've said it before..... it's the player that is the most important thing, not the instrument.

 7.
You CAN stop the payments to then, thus ending your membership temporarely, but if you had say a 5 year gap and then want to rejoin the MU, you'd have to pay 5 years worth of membership as a lump sum to rejoin - that is just about its only fault.
Erm...Really? I stopped my membership years ago and have recently rejoined and only have to pay a standard fee. I've never heard of anyone who has had to pay a back payment in that way.
Maybe they changed the contract, so your initial one it isnt effective, but for my old Bass Teacher he had to pay 3 years worth of payments in one go to rejoin.. But he HAD to have it for this cruise ship gig so he payed it regardless as a lot of venue's such as ships and hotels/weddings really require this.
For what it's worth, you don't HAVE to be in the union to play weddings/hotels and cruise ships. Some may require you to have public liability and such like (like the OP),but you are not required to be in the MU. I think someone has been feeding you a line.
 8.
With respect Doddy, you can't have listened to very much Zeppelin then! .
I have,and I don't get it at all.
 9.
Fair enough, care to elaborate?.
Sure.... You mention Drummers influenced by Weckl and the guys who play with Fagen as having regimented time and being like a metronome to play with. I mean really? Fagen used guys like Jeff Porcaro, Rick Marotta and Steve Gadd-these guys have all got a serious groove. Even a player like Weckl, who has had a lot of detractors over the years, has a seriously good feel-unfortunately most people don't see past the chops. On the other hand, you mention Bonham as being looser and grooving. I'll be honest-I don't get it. I've never found Bonham (or Zeppelin in general) to be funky or groovy or whatever. I get what you mean by mentioning Stevie and the N.O. Drummers (especially Stanton Moore and Johnny Vidacovich) but not Bonham.
 10. Interesting point about the drummers.....I disagree almost completely, but interesting point non the less. If you're going to ask if funk can be taught,I think you have to ask if any style can be taught. Sure, it's about 'the groove'(?),but so is every other style of music. You can teach and learn any style of music, but it's up to you how you apply it. You can learn about Funk or Jazz or Zydeco or whatever, but you need to listen to it to get the full understanding. Edit...
Leaving space is super important, it's the gaps and where you put them that increases the anticipation and makes a groove really funky.
Rocco? You can still be busy and retain a great feel.
 11.
As for the two split pickups, Fender did this already in the 80s, so it's nothing new. Say hello to the Elite II.
Plus a lot of basses have split Precision style pickups, they're just in a soapbar case.
 12. I like the look of the Precision with the twin Humbuckers. If they'd put those pickups on a Jazz-or even a regular single coil at the neck with a humbucker at the bridge-that would be awesome.
 13. I'm bummed that they don't still make the Rumblefish or the Brad Houser model anymore.
 14.
Tadge harsh? he never said he was a function band, just that he'd played a wedding.
I don't think it matters if its a function band or not-it shouldn't take 3 hours ( or even 4!!!!??? My God!) to set up a rig like that. Having said that,I know guys in bands who will spend nearly an entire afternoon in a pub, setting up stupid amounts of gear so that they can pretend to be rock stars in front of their mates. Edit...
plus if the band play well and the punters enjoy it they will forget about the set up issues!
Unfortunately it doesn't always work like that. While everyone will probably still have a really good night, they may not forget about your set up if you end up delaying things like the cutting of the cake,or if no one can get in the room for hours.
 15.
. We had to just stop in the end as we were delaying the cutting of the cake!
You took 3 hours and delayed the cake cutting? Not cool. It looks like you've got a pretty simple set up,so it shouldn't take long at all to get it all set up and running.Even if you don't have a dedicated sound man,it shouldn't be taking that length of time.
 16.
http://www.thebassgallery.com/Product_list...r&Strings=6
Ohhhh.....I like that Peavey Tim Landers model.
 17. My first 6 was an Ibanez BTB. They're bigger than the Soundgear and with wider string spacing, but really nice to play.
 18.
I have a used Flea Bass in our shop. Cost around £350 new. Probably the worst bass I've ever played. He's obviously just using it for the video.
He's not joking...it's horrible.
 19.
I remember when i was younger and had just started playing, a trip to the music store should have been a happy occasion. The reality though was that it was quite nerve wracking, because most of the guys who worked in all the local music stores were assholes! Stores like Treblerock, Pro Music and ABC music, full of condescending pricks who looked down their noses at anyone who wasn't part of their little clique or a "face" on the local music scene.
Unfortunately that's true of a lot of music shops.
 20.
I hope that it doesn’t sound like I’m having a go or anything because I’m not at all, and obviously it works for you, who earns a living as a professional musician. But I am interested that you will take out a MIM Fender when you have a Roscoe, especially as I have never rated any MIM Fenders that I have ever played (or indeed many American ones) and that you could pick up a secondhand Warwick or EBMM relatively cheaper (say £600 to £700)!
The reason I take out the Fender over my Roscoe (and my Shuker and Tobias),is because I find Fender Jazz basses to be extremely comfortable and easy to play, and I like the sound that I get from them.Plus, they can take a beating-they just work for me.It was also very well priced(s/h) and nicer than the US Deluxe model I tried on the same day. I had a Warwick and got rid of it(one of only 3 or 4 basses I ever got rid of),and Stingrays don't really do much for me. I still take the Roscoe and the Shuker out a lot,but I generally favour my various Fenders(especially the Jazzes)
 21.
I thought that you had a Roscoe?? For what it’s worth, most of the guys I know who play the same sort of gigs that you do tend to have: a workhorse bass, nearly always a 5 string, often expensive but certainly not cheap; a secondary bass, often a 4 string, something like a stingray or a MIA Fender; and a cheap but cheerful MIM Fender to be used for teaching or the occasional free for all jam session, but you never see them gigging the cheap bass!
I do have a Roscoe. My most used instrument over the last 18 months or so has been my Fender Deluxe Jazz V (Mexican) and my favourite instrument is a mid '90's Japanese Fender Jazz. Every instrument I own has been used on gigs,I don't care how much it is.If I wouldn't gig it,I won't buy it. If someone wouldn't take their cheaper bass out on a gig I think it says more about them than anything else.
 22.
Basidcally, while the break angle does not affect the tension, it does mean that it's much harder to pull the excess string from beyond the bridge saddles slightly while playing (which effectively increases the string length temporarily, causing the string to feel floppy)
Wha?
 23.
I agree with that wholeheartedly. But how long can shops survive in the face of people trying out instruments in the shop and then buying them online?
I think shops will always have their place-after all, when you try an instrument in a shop and then buy online you are getting a different instrument. You may love a certain bass in a shop, but the one you get may have any number of minor but significant differences. I'll always but from a shop if I can.If I'm on the lookout for new gear,I'll take sometime and hit a bunch of shops in various cities-sure I could just look and buy online, but where's the fun in that?
 24.
I'd love to get into this line of work, admittedly my reading probably isn't up to it (but I am working on that part!!) How did you guys get your first show?
I got into it by depping for my then teacher ('Little Shop...' being the first). No rehearsal or anything, literally walking in a couple of nights into the run and reading it cold. From there I got friendly with the MD who subsequently started calling me for other shows.
 25. I think it's important to know what you are going to teach. Are you going to be the kind of teacher who just teaches songs and tab,or are you going to teach music-reading,scales, arpeggios etc-interspersed with the occasional song? Or are you just going to follow the grade books? There is a lot to consider
