1. I like Victor Bailey, but I think he talks some sh*t....always has. He obviously cared about Jaco a lot-you can hear it in his playing. As far as him being on the best Weather Report albums,I think he's confusing himself with Alphonso Johnson. Although to be fair, the tune 'D Flat Waltz' from 'Domino Theory' is killer and up there with Weather Report's best.
  2. You've got good gear-if you want to improve your sound try spending some more time either on your technique or playing with the controls on your gear. Pedals are great as added spice but getting a 'better' sound will start with you as a player.
  3.
So I'm looking at reducing my collection down to a single, more professional model. I currently own an Ibanez ATK (which gets little use) and a Fender MIM Jazz Deluxe. I wanted to upgrade to an MIA Jazz Deluxe, however I have been looking at other fenders recently and I've noticed the Marcus Miller jazz is only £600 used (as opposed to MIA's which tend to be £1k+)
I've had a Marcus for a few years now and it's a great bass-admittedly I initially bought it because of what it is,but it is a great instrument non the less. Don't get fooled on the whole 'professional model' thing-The Mexican Deluxe models are great (lately I'm doing the majority of my work on the five string model) and the Ibanez ATK are really underrated.
  4.
Already looking forward to it. Lots of great equipment to peruse Same live line up as last year. Stu Hamm, Victor Bailey, Billy Sheehan on stage. http://www.bassday.co.uk/
I just assumed that the page hasn't been updated-other than the date, the site has been like since last year. I'd be surprised if it's the same line up.
  5. It's easy for someone like Victor to talk about groove, because he's at the stage where his technique and his knowledge are so deep that he can just play and let it out,he can just concentrate on making it feel good, the rest of it has become second nature.....and think that is an important thing.Victor doesn't need to talk about his technique anymore,it's already very well documented,he can now just talk about the music. It's all well and good talking about 'groove',but I think that technique and harmonic knowledge are equally as important-none of them are mutually exclusive.
  6.
Disagree. I never said if you have an expensive bass you will improve? I said if you play more, you'll improve. I'm struggling to think of an example of anything that you do more often, and fail to improve.
I never said that you did-I was referring to this quote....
I'm sure having a more expensive bass that a player really loves, appreciates and wants to simly pick up & play al the time will make them a better player too.
If you play more you won't necessarily improve. You can play your favourite songs for 10 hours every day and have fun,but you will improve more if you play something new and challenging for one hour a day. It's about the context of the practicing not the sheer amount of time.
  7.
This thread is about how much would you spend on a bass. No-one is saying an expensive bass will make you play better. If it makes you play more often though, you will improve, unless theres something wrong with you. Everything improves with practice.
I know it's about how much you spend....I was just picking up on the comment that if you have an expensive bass that you want to play, you will improve. I'm just saying that isn't the case-you may get the inspiration to pick up the instrument and play it,but that doesn't mean you will improve.
  8. I use the twin pedal RC20 XL.I find it a lot easier to use than the single pedal version. I also run it through my rig like I would with any other pedal.
  9.
I think you've over analysed. I think he simply meant (Correct me if I'm wrong Molan!), if you have an instrument that inspires you to pick it up and play more frequently, with added enthusiasm, then it will improve your playing. As with anything, the more you do it, the better you will become.
If everytime you pick up the instrument you play the same licks and songs, there comes a point very quickly where improvement stops...it doesn't matter what bass it's played on.A nice expensive instrument may inspire you to pick it up but that doesn't guarantee improvement.
If i analyse what you said, becoming better does not depend at all on what you play/study. If your'e studying stuff thats beyond you, and you dont understand it, it could de-motivate you and make you less interested and worse as a player. Similarly, if you simply play open E all the time, it won't make you better either, but then I'm over analysing. Sorry, in one of them moods today!!
If you play and study stuff that is beyond you, that is how you improve as a player-by pushing yourself to play something that you can't already do.....just picking up and playing alone won't improve you.
  10.
True dat, having played a few cheaper uprights/EUBs I think you HAVE to spend a few hundred quid just to get something playable in that market.
Although a friend of mine recently spent 7 grand on an upright which is really nice, while my old teacher bought one at a similar time for £800 which is even nicer.
  11.
I'm sure having a more expensive bass that a player really loves, appreciates and wants to simly pick up & play al the time will make them a better player too.
I disagree with this. A nice instrument may inspire you to pick it up often, but it won't make you a better player-that is down to what you play/study on it,not the cost of the instrument and how often you pick it up.
  12.
Lot of those old soul tunes are in Eb so he might have done, yeah. *random accusation not based in fact*
Yeah, but Jamerson played a lot of chromatic passing tones using open strings leading into the chords. He was usually in standard tuning.
  13. Did it really take 3 months to make the decision?
  14. It's annoying me now........What does BK mean? Edit.....found it now-I thought sk8 was taking the piss.
  15.
I preferred that BAII to my P MIM although I have to say it is quite difficult to palm mute while using a BAII
Why is it difficult to palm mute using a Badass II? I've got two basses fitted with them and don't find any difference.
  16.
Just bang out a dimmished scale run - you got a one in three chance of it being right
I don't like those odds.
  17. I like active electronics because it gives me more tonal control without fiddling with my amp.
  18. If you like heavy gauge strings, you might be better of getting a .30 for the high C
  19. As little as possible....... The only instrument I have that cost me over a grand is my electric upright, and even that was only just over.

    Moog Pedals...
I'm trying to emulate that dirty DubStep kind of bass sound, the warbling and the nastiness of it. But also the sounds created by John Davis of Nerve, the weird Electronica kind of stuff. Basically I'm trying to turn my bass guitar rig into a bass synth rig in a round about way.
Here's an interview with John Davis talking a bit about his effects http://www.tonefactor.com/blog/2010/07/22/...davis-of-nerve/ Slightly off topic, but still relevant.....the new Nerve album is brilliant (as is their last album).
  21.
I think it takes a little f*** up to get you into the gig. Sometimes i'll be incredibly nervous, and then hit a note slightly off or something - to me it sounds like a massive mistake, but I know no-one else cares, and that's when I start to relax into the gig.
I'm the opposite....if I screw something up I become more on edge and less relaxed for at least the remainder of the song.
The worst I had was a guitarist changing the key to a song on the 2 of 1,2,3,4. The only thing is I didn't catch what he said and took me about 16 bars to realise he went up one and a half semitones. Who goes up one and a half!?!?!
One and a half semitones? I think you mean one and a half tones= 3 semitones= minor third.
  22.
I want to buy a bass with a unique sound. I want this bass high / slap sound from the fender Marcus Miller bass and a huge low sound. What bass you suggest?
Erm....... How about a Fender Marcus Miller?
  23. Well done
  24.
The soundman is the guitarist in control of the PA. He likes to turn the volume of the whole PA up for the second half and some other times too, so erm .....
As long as he leaves your monitor channel alone it doesn't matter if he ups the PA volume-it won't go up in your ears.
  25.
Slightly off topic, but I once attended a gig where the bassist broke a string mid song. He didn't quite throw his hands up and admit defeat... What he actually did was to shout "F*CK!!!" into the mic and storm offstage cue the entire band stopping the song and the vocalist awkwardly mumbling "Erm... has anyone got a spare bass?" True story!
Idiot.
