A question for you mate.... what is the cheapest bass that you have used on a pro gig in the last few years?? Genuinely interested to know……
A Tokai SG that cost me £100 (edit....this was at the Italian Grand Prix last year) For what it's worth, the only instrument I own that cost me over a grand (and not by much) is my electric upright.
Why are hard cases a pain? I am missing something here. I don't use public transport or ride a bike which is about the only reason i can think of ever contemplating using a gig bag.
They're an extra trip to the car. They're often a pain to load unless you drop your seats. They're a git to carry if you have to walk any distance. A good gig bag,for me,is way better and you can just sling it over your shoulder and take it with you easily.
I don't understand why after spending a £1000 on a bass it is put in a sh*tty little cloth bag.
That's why you should buy a good one from someone like iGig,Mono,Reunion Blues or whoever. I use a gig bag all the time-I never bother with hardcases.

I'm not a member, but I've watched all his free videos that are on iTunes and they are really good-as you'd expect. And at $39 a month,it's a lot less than I pay him for an hour lesson
pro's dont buy their basses they get given them
No....Rock stars get given them. Back to the OP....I really don't know what you are getting at. It doesn't matter how much money you spend on an instrument-it's what you play on it that is important. Spending a fortune doesn't make you pro-all it means is you spent a fortune.Likewise, spending a couple of hundred pounds doesn't make you any less of a pro. Take a player like Paul Westwood, who has played with so many people both live and on record...his main bass is a Hohner Steinberger copy. I find the whole concept of 'pro-level' gear to be bogus and a pure marketing ploy to get people to spend more money.

Agressive bassist looking for Glam rock punk band

So,you don't want me to pass on any dep gigs to you then? -
Gator?

It's a great app. I've had it since it was called the iReal Book, and have done loads of gigs with it. It's really handy for those times when a tune is called that you are not quite sure of the changes to.

I never clean the fingerboard. I run a cloth over it quickly when I change the strings, but that's it.

I've done everything from duo to big band, but at the moment I'm doing a lot with between 4-8 piece. I prefer playing with the larger bands as I find that I have more freedom, especially when there are keys. As much as I like playing in a trio,I find that often you need to be more of an 'anchor',especially under guitar solos. In the larger bands I have more room to either play busier or lay out-I don't always have to stick to riffs. I'm usually a pretty busy player anyway, but I think it works better if there are keys to fill things out.

I've got a session that's way over my head...
, and some parts just don't make sense (like 4 1/2 beats in a bar of 4/4).
Just for my own confusion....When you say '1/2 beats' are you referring to quavers/8th note (half a beat each)?? -
If it takes all day to do two songs, hey, that's what it takes.
If it takes all day to do 2 songs, you may be the wrong person for the job. Seriously,if you don't think you can handle the gig,it might be best to call the guys and back out. It'll be better for you to be open about it and bow out gracefully than go in with a 'can't do' attitude and not pull it off. Of course, there is a chance that you'll go in and totally rinse it,but you need to be confident in your abilities, which,at the moment,it sounds like you're not. -
Why do you need to use all those different tunings?
That sounds awful! The things we do for bread and butter eh?
Exactly.
The sheer mentioning of that has me grimacing . Did you hear the end result?? Was it as bad as it sounds?
It was horrible....just an inditinct thud.
-
I once did a session where I had to play a supplied Ric with flatwounds. I'm not a huge fan of Ric's usually, but in this case it was horrible. I suppose it wasn't helped that it was tuned BEAD and it was insisted that it had the neck pickup solo'ed and the bridge mutes on.... and played with a pick.

I wouldn't get rid of the pre Ernie Ball.....it's a lovely bass.
But as you said, if I learn them changes well I can gig for the rest of my life on them and in a toss up between earning money for playing my bass and the risk of boring seasoned jazz musicians I know which way I'm going to go with it.
In fairness though, you won't earn much money playing jazz
-
Blues Changes and Rhythm Changes (The changes to 'I Got Rhythm') are both used for a load of standards.
-
Roscoe basses are stunning. I've had an LG3005 for a few years now and it's a great instrument.
-
Is that the Wikapedia list? I'll admit there are a load that I've not heard of,but out of the ones I do know there are a bunch that I wouldn't have thought were 'Acid Jazz'. I can go with bands like Jamiroquai,Brand New Heavies and Incognito, but I'm not convinced with the inclusion of MMW,Soulive,Outkast,Tribe Called Quest and various others.
If anyone's interested...Galactic - Coolin' Off...is an awesome album if I may say so!!!
That is a great album...although I prefer 'Crazyhorse Mongoose'. I'd wouldn't really class Galactic as Acid Jazz though-I'd say they were more of a Funk/Jam Band.
And I thought he played a Lakland Bob Glaub
He does, but his Fender has been his go to instrument for years, especially in the studio-he even has a custom shop replica. According to the Bass Player interview he's using Fenders as his main basses live, with the Lakland in drop D.
I have a theory it's down to the record company marketing department - "you don't look like a proper bass player unless you have floppy hair and a battered Fender jazz!!"
I think it's more to do with the majority of players aren't gear heads and Fender make good, solid, reliable instruments.
Get a bit of knowledge before lessons if possible. There are some great resources on the net as some have mentioned. At least learn major and minor scales then find a teacher.
Why do you feel you should learn some scales before you have lessons? If you go to a good teacher you will learn these early on anyway and will be more likely to learn how they work and understand them rather than copying a finger pattern off the Internet, which is what a lot of people do.
