Tuning / Detuning - confusing the **** out of me
Doddy replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
If a song uses open strings, particularly the bottom string (SCOM does), you pretty much have to match the original tuning if you want to play it accurately in that key. There are ways around it I suppose, but won't sound so good.
As long as you're playing the right notes,it doesn't matter what you are tuned to. If I'm playing a five string, like I do 90% of the time, should I still tune down a semitone to match the recording? There's no point,I've got the notes under my fingers anyway. -
Bit of a general question here, but when the pub is full of people and youre setting up you equipment what are your favourite warm up riffs you play when sound checking. I've only done a handful of gigs with my current band so limited experience and was just interested in what people do and play. tunes not in their set, scales? any favourite harmonic riffs to practice to while live audience in the midst? ta Rich
The venue is usually empty when I'm setting up and sound checking. For sound checking,I normally just play a simple walking line or simple funk groove that goes over the entire range of the instrument. Sound check isn't the time to practise or rehearse, especially if there are people in the room.
There doesn't seem to be a standard. It would be easier it if they just said tune to A=420Hz (or whatever Ab is before some pedant shoots me ).
But really you are still tuning to A440......It's just that the A is now one fret higher-the frequency of the note hasn't actually changed, only it's position. The last few posts have mentioned my biggest gripe with altered tunings-If you drop tune, put a capo on or whatever, the notes are not the same as they would be i standard tuning, but unfortunately a lot of guitar players (and bass players) still refer to the notes as though they were in standard. This is mainly because a lot of them work on chord shapes,so they class a G shape as a G chord no matter what the tuning. -
im suprised no one has mentioned the 6 string steve harris fender jazz bass, has anyone played/seen/heard this bass. although, i couldnt bring myself to buy one as its a sig seres and just couldnt buy someine elses bass lol.
That's because the Steve Harris bass in a 4 string Precision You mean the Steve Bailey model. Although he now plays a signature Warwick. Don't let the signature thing bother you too much...it's not like it has stupid graphics on it or anything.

I don't think there is really any argument that lessons are the most effective way of learning.Having someone explain and demonstrate things to you will help you improve quicker. Books are great, but work best in conjunction with lessons. Sure, you can learn a lot from them, but you may need someone to go through them with you to help with your understanding of the exercises. The Internet is a funny one...there is so much material out there, but there is no 'sh*t filter'. A beginning player could watch a bunch of really bad videos (expert village, anyone?),or read a lot of misinformation or half truths (or general poor advice) and it will have to be corrected later down the line. There is also a lot of great stuff, but a beginning player won't yet have the knowledge to separate the good from the bad.
If I had the money, I would definately go for http://www.ibanez.com/BassGuitars/model-SR5006E Especially if you already have an Ibanez. Best looking 6 string I personally think too, none of this horrible body shape nonsense.
I know I've commented on the other exact thread, but if this was more sensibly priced I'd be all over it....... I've got a couple of nice six strings...An Ibanez BTB,which is probably not what you want as it has a 35" scale and a wide, but comfortable, neck. I've also got a really nice Tobias six, which is lovely. But,'the best'? Whichever you like the sound and playability of-it doesn't matter if it's a Tanglewood or a Fodera.
As much as I love this band the backwards strung 5/6 string kills it for me! Nothing worse than a catchy tune you cant play along too!
You can still play along...use you're ears rather than watching Haslips hands. Or buy the Yellowjackets songbook-it's ace.
One of the finest jazz/funk/ fusion albums ever IMO.
Totally agree. That first album is awesome. Bands like Galactic and Lettuce are great, but it's a different vibe. I think the Yellowjackets are more 'Jazz' compared to Galactic's New Orleans funk and Lettuce's hip-hop/funk thing.
Erm.. who is Joey Jordison?
Slipknot drummer

I'd just avoid using your middle finger.
Hey did you see Joey Jordison on bass!
No......No I didn't.
This was Fender's thinking behind their first 5 string in the 60s. Only 20 frets irc.
15 Standard Fenders have 20 frets.
Would you take a suggestion from someone, then, who's shipped hundreds of thousands of records? Even acknowledging limitations, if one may suppose they exist, it's no mean feat; and hard to balance. Even if it is all that they can play, they've still achieved - right?
I've got no problem listening to anyone, but like I said there is a difference between playing simply because it's the best thing to do,and playing simply because it's all you can do. In the case of Kim Deal,I get the impression that it's the latter option. Record sales are not irrelevant in this regard.
Why does it matter what she *can* play? She's got a unique sound because of what she *does* play - it doesn't matter whether she's capable of anything else.
I don't hear anything unique in her playing. What I'm saying is that simplicity isn't always a good thing if it's your only option-which from reading her article in Bass Player- it pretty much is.
Do you know anybody who *can* play very technically and has ever played anything as simple as a Kim Deal line? No.
Yes..there are tons of players who can play very well technically and have played very simple basslines.
Mmm, I don't see why a bassist should do as she suggests, ie. don't get involved with the dynamics. The more musical and empathic your palette, the more musical you will be. I actually think she's talking a bit of bullshit. You should do what you think is right for the song and work it until it sounds good and wholesome. Nothing wrong with a broad set of musical principles that you you identify with, but what works for the Pixies wouldn't work necessarily elsewhere.
I agree with this. Also,I find it difficult to listen to a suggestion from a player who I have never heard play anything but simple crotchet/quaver basslines. For me,it's like I've said in the past...Do you play a simple line because it's the best thing to play for what you are doing,or do you play it because it's the only thing that you can play?

We all know that I'm a huge Marcus fan,but I've got to say that that video,to me,shows that Marcus is just so far ahead of all those gospel chops guys. The groove, the tone...everything.

I bought one of these last week from Pete Academy and it's a really good instrument. When you factor in the price,it becomes a great instrument. The thing that surprised me the most was the fret work. It's a lot better than on any of the other (new) Squiers that I've played. I'm going to be using it on Sunday at Silverstone. Squier/Fender have really got their arse in gear lately and they are putting out some really good instruments.

That's great. It's from the 'Master of All Trades' DVD.
LCM, is that the classical one? Not heard of it at all when applying for the uni's
LCM is London College of Music...their bass guitar grades are under the RGT banner.
as I said earlier, this scene calls for almost exclusively 4 strings and almost exclusively fenders at that (a few rics too I guess)
I don't think it's a matter of the scene calling for 4 string Fenders,I think it's more that most of the guys in these bands really don't give a sh*t about gear (and playing in some instances.)
Cheers man, the main reason i'm doing it is because my college paid for it!, also, my uni of choice said they want a grade 8!
Just as a matter of interest....and I've heard this from a couple of Universities....there is alot more credit and respect for the LCM exams than there is for Rockschool.
What about the bass playing?
S'alright.
What kind of bass, is not capable of that though? i mean surely the cheapest of basses can hold a note for more than 3 beats, or at least a few seconds. i have a £40 bass, and i didn't notice short notes or anything like that.
I've played a few Fenders (amongst others) that have really poor sustain.
