1. All I can say is the first example has a bit more mid range. I have absolutely no idea which is which, they've both got very similar qualities.
 2.
By the law of averages, surely the country with the largest pool of participants is more likely to have more people who excel in an activity in which all countries take part ?
If you're talking pure numbers,it also stands to reason that the countries with large populations will also have more people that suck. The first time I went to America I saw alot of really good players.....but I also saw a hell of a lot of sh*t.
 3.
My problem has always been with the rythmn, if you add a dot then it makes that note half as long again but how the hell do you measure that when looking at a quaver for example!!
A quaver with a dot becomes the equivalent of 3 semi quavers. That's why a common rhythm is dotted quaver/semiquaver-the dotted quaver last for 3 semi quavers and the final semi quaver completes the beat.
 4. No worries. If you want any other info, feel free to message me.
 5.
Another silly question, do you use your fretting or picking hand?
Picking hand. It's nearest to the page and I can hold a note down or tap while I do it.
 6. Generally I'm looking a bar or two ahead of where I'm playing(unless it's a super tricky bit),so I can see if I've got a note that I can hold or if I can play an open string, and turn before the bar is over.Sometimes though you just have to be really quick with it,especially if the page turn is in the middle of a phrase. As daft as it sounds,it's worth practising it for a bit, just to make sure you can do it comfortably.
 7.
are German bass players better than the English?
Wolfgang Schmidt and Kai Eckhardt are great German players, but are they better than Janek Gwizdala or Lawrence Cottle?
are English players better than the scottish?
Jack Bruce is pretty darn good.
too take it too the next level, Anyone know a good indian bass player? I dont know of a good indian footballer, so perhaps they are worse at bass than the scotish?
I can't name you an Indian player off the top of my head but it doesn't mean that there isn't some dude over there that would blow everyones minds in a similar way to how Richard Bona and Baghiti Khumalo did.
 8.
The only reason you need to read is to open some more doors as a musician and make yourself available to many more gigs as a working musician. (unless you have apoint or grudge too prove to someone)
That's not the only reason.......maybe he just wants to? Maybe there are some books that he wants to read from? Maybe he just wants to understand music a bit more? It's not just about getting gigs.
 9.
Does anyone know what bass he was using for Over The Falls?
Michael Kelly Bayou 4 http://www.michaelkellyguitars.com/bayou4.html
 10. A good starting point is to learn where the open strings are on the stave. Straight away you've got at least four notes and you can use those as reference points. Even if you are counting up and down to begin with,it will get easier quicker than you realise. I'm assuming you are pretty solid with the notes on the fingerboard...if you're not,you need to be.
 11.
I practise 2-3 hours a week tops and I can keep up with the best. (not to blow my own horn)
I thought I was awesome at 20 too .....I suppose it also depends on what you think of as 'the best'. On a more general note,a big part of practicing is not the pure number of hours but the material that you study. Playing along to your favourite Chili Peppers for a couple of hours is great fun but it's not practicing. The idea is to practice something that you have never played or can't already do....that is how you improve. An hour studying an 8 bar exercise out of 'Chord Studies' will see a bigger improvement than 3 hours jamming to 'Californication' for the 6th time. Don't get me wrong, playing to your favourite albums is fun and important but after a short while it stops becoming practice and you need to look elsewhere for improvement.
 12.
Wasn't Stuart Copeland the drummer in Oysterhead (or am I mistaken)?
You're not mistaken. Hot Head Show singer is Stuarts son Jordan
 13.
That said - They are doing well enough to open for Primus and clearly have a fan base looking online so I can't argue with success!
No..They get to open up for Primus because the singers dad used to be the drummer in Oysterhead with Les Claypool.
 14. I agree that Gary Willis owns the fretless-he's a fantastic player. But there is a track on his first solo album called 'Everlasting Night' and it could be easily mistaken for being Jaco.( The Album 'No Sweat' is one of my favourite bass lead album...it's brilliant). I know that is only one tune of many, but I can see both sides of the argument.
 15. I understand where he's coming from, but I think that it's harshly put. I think there is a clear Jaco influence in the vast majority of fretless players.Listening to guys like Michael Manring,Gary Willis,Pino,Steve Bailey,Alain Caron, Marcus Miller and way more, you can hear the Jaco influence in the way they play and in their tone. I'm not saying they sound exactly like Jaco, but the influence is there. Berlin is right though when he says about players playing out of tune and playing sliding harmonics. So many players pick up a fretless and start sliding everywhere and adding vibrato to every note.
 16.
i have never seen a funk player play with a pick, but ive seen loads of rock players play with there fingers... go figure..
You're not familiar with Bobby Vega then? He's a really funky pick player-he subbed for Rocco with Tower of Power.
 17.
My problem with endorsement deals is that it makes me uncertain as to peoples motives. Say someone starts a thread asking "what are the best instrument cables?" On this forum, at least, you'll get a lot of people saying "Use obbm." And because I know that obbm isn't paying those people, I can be confident that the positive reviews are genuine. However, then you'll get one guy who says "Use Spectraflex" and in his signature it says "Endorsed by/endorses Spectraflex." Now, it may be that this guy genuinely likes Spectraflex cables. But then it's also possible that his contract says "You must be vocal in your support of The Company and take every available opportunity to tout The Product." I can't be sure whether he is promoting the cables because they are genuinely the best, or because it's financially beneficial for him to do so.
As this is obviously aimed at me,I'd better answer. While I do have a deal with Spectraflex cables,I was using their leads for about 3 previous to that, and was offered the endorsement deal out of the blue after I placed an order for a couple of new leads because the UK distributor had not got any in stock. I'm not told to promote them at every opportunity-I genuinely prefer them to any other lead that I've used. If I didn't like them I wouldn't use them.
 18.
Sorry In that case, if you don't care what brand it says on the microphone, then get these. They are very good and you'd be fooled easily into thinking you were using the real thing! http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_mb85_beta.htm
I was working with a sound guy a few weeks ago who had been doing some pretty big pop acts and he always uses these mics for the vocals. He reckoned that they were at least as good or better than the Shures.
 19.
When I saw that you had answered, I eagerly read the thread! That answer is a bit disapointing I really thought that you would supply a technical answer I could ponder on all weekend I do agree with you however!
I don't think there is a real technical answer to it-whether you are alternating up/down strokes or alternating between 2 fingers. You just need to be comfortable in your picking and be able to lead with either finger/stroke. If you are comfortable leading with either finger or stroke there shouldn't be a problem.
 20.
Reason I say the above is I've seen bands where the bass player plays only root notes only where you really need the rest to make the song work, but the crowd still dance as they know the song, or equally great bands with bad singers who achieve the same
But there you are talking about playing a part differently....Who is going to notice if you are fretting a low D on a five rather than drop tuning and playing an open string?
 21. Is playing upstrokes on the downbeat considered wrong? Personally,as long as you're playing the notes I don't think it matters.
 22.
So you play a very well known song completely wrong and you think that no one notices or cares?? You're having yourself on mate...........
Depends what you are calling completely wrong. Fretting notes instead of open strings and tuning up differently? The only people who will pick up on that, maybe, are other bass players-and even then as long as the notes are right it won't matter.
 23. What amp are you using now?
 24.
If the audience is in the room I just line check.
That's all it takes. The majority of pub gigs are backline only,so all it takes is a quick check to make sure everything is working.
