Short scale for less than £200! Perfect for little hands!
Doddy replied to MiltyG565's topic in Bass Guitars
Without a doubt you are right. But think of how many parents are getting their young kid a bass this year. Are they going to buy it second hand? I wouldn't think so... especially if they know frig all about guitars.
You didn't say that that was happening. I assumed you were looking for yourself. In that case,I'd have a look at the Squier Mustang -either the Vintage Modified or the Mikey Way signature. -
So Berhinger are cheap and nasty as opposed to cheap and cheerful then. Ok, I'll disregard them.
I wouldn't disregard them totally. Some of them are worth trying out,and you may like them. I've got the Behringer Ultra Vibrato (after reading recommendations by Juan Alderete) and it's a great sounding pedal and was under £20. Yes they are made of plastic, but they are not as sh*tty-quality as people often make out/like to think. I've stomped on mine loads as well as dropped it and kicked it (accidentally) and other than a couple of dings,it's fine.

I picked up a secondhand Tokai EB3 copy a couple of years ago for under £100-That's a nice little instrument. I also got hold of a really nice short scale '82 Fender Bullet for a couple of hundred pounds-that's a great bass. As much as I like Ibanez instruments,I think you can pick up better instruments than the GSR if you go secondhand. -
Ostinato stuff in Eb/Bb minor - fingering is a bind.
Doddy replied to thisnameistaken's topic in EUB and Double Bass
For me it depends on what the ostinato is. If I can comfortably play it down in the lower positions I will, otherwise I'll play it in higher up the neck. -
Meshell Ndegeocello at Ronnie Scott's next year for three nights....

I'm away,so couldn't go anyway...but wouldn't it be cool if she did at least one date that wasn't in London? -
I also play the linoleum.
Play on the linoleum makes more sense

Great track and groove. Juan Nelson plays some really funky lines with Ben Harper. Check out his playing-and solo-on the track 'Steal My Kisses...it's really tasty.
Although I think you need to be able to play a little bit, if only so you can recognise a few chord shapes to help work stuff out from youtube videos.
I think ear training will be a greater benefit in that regard.
I guess we all make some sorta mistakes here and there - except perhaps for the really top-notch pros among us, but then again they can even be thrown by someone else's errors.
Everyone makes mistakes at times,it doesn't matter who they are. I've seen Victor Wooten visibly and audibly wince when he does something wrong. I've seen/heard/played with top guys who have misread something,or missed a repeat or whatever. Anyone that says that they don't make mistakes at some time or another (no matter how small) is bullshitting.

Moving set of strings from one bass,&put on another
Doddy replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Accessories and Misc
The only time I've done that is when I bought a Bass that had Flatwounds fitted. They came straight off and went on to one of my Precisions. They are still on there 6 or 7 years later. -
The LS2 is a great little pedal-you can pick them up cheap secondhand-I bought my second one last week for under £20. You don't need it to be true bypass.Don't worry about it. As far as EQ is concerned,I pretty much always keep things flat.I'll sometimes boost the mids or bass slightly but not much. What gear are you using?
He's class keneally, seen him live. But it's kinda musicianship over music, academic over nature.
I've seen him live too. I don't think it's musicianship over music though. Some of his stuff is very clever and chops heavy, but other stuff is just straight up songs.

Surely it'll be in the Rockschool Grade 3 book?
I love this line from the brochure: - "direct trains from Sawbridgeworth to London Liverpool Street from 41 minutes". How many people that can afford nearly £7M for their house would even begin to entertain the prospect of taking a train anywhere?!?
The ones who can't drive? Or the ones that spend all their money on the house and can't afford a car or chauffer maybe?

Drums have always been a big part of my upbringing,so I've always kind of dabbled in them, but when I decided to play an instrument seriously I went straight to the bass for some reason. I've got a few guitars and have done a few gigs on them, but it's very much secondary for me (well, after playing Electric,Upright, Synth bass-so I guess it's 4th on the list really, maybe lower). To be honest though, the'failed guitarist' stereotype is very often true in many cases, especially with rock players.Frank Zappa says some interesting things about this in his book.
If I was depping for a band that did a song in a different key then I am being paid not to make elementary mistakes like that.
Depends.....I did a dep gig for a band a couple of weeks ago-learnt the material-fine-talked through everything with the band before the gig and was told that everything was in original key. Great. Except it wasn't. Not a problem at all,(most were changed to make easy segues) except on the one song that started with a 4 bar bass groove.I started in the recorded key,the rest of the band came in a semitone lower. Not a big problem-I could adjust easily-but things happen.

It's a great DVD. There is a big section on tone where he talks about instruments and amps. There is another section where he plays in different settings from full band (his own),to duo (with his wife Kira Small) and with a drummer (Gene Hoglan). Then he does some stuff where he plays to tracks (his own,Vai,Keneally). It's one of the best bass player instructional dvd's I've seen. Plus Bryan is a top bloke and monster player.
Have you tried the Elites nickel strings before? It seems no one on here has lol.
I haven't,because I don't particularly like nickel strings-I always use steel.
-
Aren't the Legacy strings supposedly made by Rotosound? If so,they might be your best bet. Personally,I'd go for the Elites.
just wait a bit longer until mike keneally is available
Now you're talking. As far as music is concerned,I personally prefer Jeff Beck's 'Guitar Shop' (and 'Wired' and Blow by Blow',but mainly 'Guitar Shop') to anything that Led Zeppelin have done. I think Keneally's albums are better than all of them though.
-
I use Ultimate stands for everything-usually the GS200 but I've also used the GS100 (which hangs the instrument from the head). For a six string, the GS200 is the better option(depending on neck width, obviously)
54% of statistics are made up.
23% of people already knew that

Jeff Beck. I've always thought that Page was often quite sloppy (Plus,I'm not a fan of Zeppelin).
One guitarist used to open one of our songs (which was in F#) in either Fb or E#. I don't know what he thought he was doing.
??? ???
Fair enough, so I guess you're not someone who's ever needed to analyse their own process of memorisation per se?
Not really I haven't. I might listen to the tunes a couple of times without picking up the bass, usually in the car, before learning them,so I know how it goes. Then it's just a matter of getting it under the fingers. One thing that I think helps (at least for me) is having some knowledge about chord progression and harmony. Many songs use similar progressions (I-IV-V, I-VI-II-V etc) and if you can hear and recognise them it makes life a lot easier.
