1. I think the problem is the use of the word 'Masterclass'. Personally, I don't think that he's a 'master' of the instrument and I'd expect some one leading a 'class' (which suggests educational)to at least know where an 'A' is on the bass (which he has admitted that he doesn't).If it was advertised as a Q&A I don't think there would be a problem. I'm not a fan of Hook at all and I really don't get Joy Division or New Order (except for 'World in Motion' obviously),but I get that there are people who would like to hear his stories.I don't think he'd offer much in a 'masterclass' setting though.
 2.
The proper money US Peaveys are lovely!
I was pretty close to buying a US Peavey Cirrus a couple of years ago. They are really nice, top quality instruments and you can get them for a good price secondhand-they don't really hold their value that well. The one I tried was around £700,which is great when you think that they are around £2500 new.
 3. He's done more than I thought....but then again,I'm not really a fan.
 4. I don't know about books...but Bryan Beller's 'Mastering Tone and Versatility' DVD has a very good and relatively in depth section about tone.
 5. I don't think that he's got much of a discography beyond putting out his own stuff, so it might be tough to find him on many albums.
 6. I'm not available for a full time band, but I'd be up for any deps that might come up.
 7.
I am going to venture into 'tosser' mode now so bear with..... If people can't be bothered to invest in their playing and have the attention span of a bean-bag, why are they trying to improve their playing with theory books? These books are not dull, they are just a little demanding and take a little time to absord, like learning any new language. Learning anything that is demanding is going to push a student and, if s/he fails after one session of basic theory because it is a bit dry, then s/he ain't going to make it in the long run. Personally, I would start with discussing basic concepts with a friend who is willing to tell you about intervals, basic chord theory etc. Once it starts to make sense, the rest becomes less dry. And learning to read music brings it to life something rotten....
I've got to be honest...I agree with you. It's not always easy to absorb the information in the books, but that doesn't make them boring. There is a lot of stuff to learn. If you use the material in conjunction with other methods of learning (like learning songs) it becomes really easy to start to see how it all works together. It takes time and study to learn and understand the concepts. If we take a couple of Bass specific books like 'Chord Studies for Electric Bass' and 'Serious Electric Bass',they are full of great material to study and practise but it might not be as easy and instant as learning a song by your favourite band or ripping through the same old licks-It will do you far more good though. And yes...reading will make it better.
 8. Offering a different train of thought....For big gigs, you don't actually need big gear as chances are you'll have a lot of PA support. You could easily do them with your head and a small cab like a 2x10 or even a 1x12 (which is my current favourite). To be honest, I've played large gigs (a few thousand people) with a 100 watt combo.
 9.
Someone tell me if this doesn't work. Chordwise I'm not sure if the chords stay the same e.g. for C (Ionian) C Dm Em F G Am B(dim) C
Yeah, in major Diatonic harmony ( in key) the chord structure will be the same.... I maj7 ii min7 iii min7 IV maj V 7 vi min7 vii min7 b5 (half diminished)
 10.
Hi guys forgive me for my 'thick' questions now At the momment i am being taught major chord tones and there inversions inside out, to create a walking bassline. How would you use the modes for a walking bassline ? Also how would you work out the relative mode for another mode eg. C lydian is the same as ' ...... ' ? Cheers guys
Answering the last question first.... Lydian is the 4th mode of the major scale, so C Lydian would be in G major- C being the 4th note of the G major scale. The modes always come in the same order..... I Ionian II Dorian III Phrygian IV Lydian V Mixolydian VI Aeolian VII Locrian As far as using modes for walking, the chords are generally telling you what to play.....for example,if you see a C7, it's a major chord with a flat 7, so you can play the notes from C Mixolydian. The strong notes will be the chord tones, but the rest of the scale can make the line more fluid.
 11.
They said that the reason for it was simple---their requirements for things like power supply, lighting equipment, etc, were pretty complicated and very particular. If they turned up and the M&Ms hadn't been done then they could be sure the rest of their requirements wouldn't have been met correctly either!
Yes,because obviously the time it takes to sort out the important requirements is going to be well spent sorting out brown M&M's.
 12.
Sounds great, any chance you could link that please Doddy? Having a look through the site and can't seem to find it - probably just me being thick
http://www.victorwooten.com/labs.html Here you go. There are a couple of cool little things there.
 13.
I have Paul don't tell me off spent most of yesterday reading/playing from the Rufus Reid evolving bassist book, the game was just for fun
Haha. I know it's just a bit of fun It's good to be able to recognise the notes on the stave quickly on a computer but it's a different story-and more important-to be able to do it on the instrument. There is a similar thing on Victor Wootens website where it shows you a note and you 'play' it on a bass neck
 14. I've done it a lot,and it's fine. If you are already going through the PA then there won't (shouldn't) be any extra bass to add. I wouldn't do it with floor wedges though,it's a million times better with in ears. Also, what is everyone else doing? If you are going ampless can the rest of the band hear you? If you get the whole band on in ears then you get the stage volume right down and everyone can get a good mix while still getting a good sound out front-sometimes better because the soundguy can balance the sound without worrying about stage volume. Some desks, like Presonus, let you download an iPhone app where you can control your own monitor mix via a wireless network-it's brilliant.
 15. My 'synth' sound begins with the OC2.To be honest it sounds good enough on it's own (no direct signal, -1 at 3/4, -2 around 1/2),but adding a bit of envelope filter and/or overdrive sounds cool. I've also had good results with the Ibanez SB7. Personally though,if I want a good synth bass sound I'll play synth. It's not just the sound-there is a feel to the synth that you can't really get on an electric bass.
 16. In his new book he talks about giving the option of giving his music away and says that more people actually chose to pay something for the albumsthan get them for free.He talks about how giving stuff away, like his music and some videos, helps to generate an income because people will go on to buy his other albums,go to his gigs, subscribe to his lessons site etc. With regards to the albums,I think there are some good melodies there-tunes like 'Four Brothers'(especially the older live versions),'Mana','Culture' and 'Alibea' spring to mind.
 17. Now go and do it on the bass
 18.
It's the 5 string USA version.
Ahhhh ok. I thought the Marcus V had a five bolt neck plate? At least, the one's I've seen have.
 19.
The Marcus Miller bass is a dream to play, and has 6 bolts attaching it to the body via a plate making for a really sturdy fit. The frets are all perfectly seated, and the bridge is perfectly positioned, and allows for either through the body stringing or through the bridge on both basses. I like the hipshot machines on the Marcus Miller bass too.
I'm guessing you've modified your Marcus bass, because as standard it has a 3 Bolt neck (not 6),Badass II bridge (no through body stringing) and Fender '70's reverse machine heads (not Hipshot). I've got a bunch of Fenders and there are some inconsistencies, but nothing that I'd kick off about. I've seen some late '70's Fenders that have had really large gaps in the neck pocket, which kind of put me off a little, otherwise I don't think a small gap is too much of a problem.
 20.
Couple more questions for you... what is the tweeter like? Hissy? Clear? Adjustable attenutation? And what speaker connections does it use?
The horn is nicely voiced-it's clear but and not harsh (I don't know the actual technical specs). It doesn't have adjustable attenuation but I don't think that it's really needed. It's dead quiet too with no hiss (that I've noticed anyway). The connection is either jack or Speakon (I always use the Speakon).
Thanks Doddy, that's such a cool mini rig of doom
Thanks. It also fits in the boot of my car without dropping the back seats
 21.
Doddy - does the Mi12 have feet on two sides? The pictures Ive seen show them on the long side - just wondered if they were on the short side under the port too? Cheers Geoff
Yeah,it's got feet on the side opposite the handle and under the port so you can place/stack them horizontally or vertically.
Would love to see 'em matey, only ever seen the stock Ashdown product photos... Cheers, Eude
Ok...hope this works. Here's a couple from about early december..... 22.
Ask Doddy, who has also commented on this topic. He's been using the MiBass550 and Mi12 for some time now. He seems pretty chuffed with the setup.
Indeed I am.
Would you say your set up with one Mi12 is more than enough in the grunt department for the kind of gigs you've just done? Or is everything maxed out?
I've been using the rig in a lot of different situations and it gets loud, but the MiBass rig has handled everything fine. I generally run the master volume and gain at about halfway and have the EQ flat or with a slight mid boost. It's worked great with the Upright and Synth too as well as with a heavily effected 5 string. It has no problem cutting through a guitar based band or through an 8 piece horn band.
I'd still love to see some pics of this gear too...
I've got a one or two pics on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram,taken a month or so ago, with the rig behind me if you want a look.
 23. I use Sibelius, although it's out of your price range. ....I use a pen and manuscript paper a lot more though.
 24. Personally, i'd suggest basic repetition exercises. Start with arpeggios so that you can familiarise yourself with thirds, fifths and sevenths, then move on to the other scale tones and finally chromatics. The problem with songs, for me, is that once you realise that a 5th is ' Star Wars', then what? What if it's a 5th lower? It's easier to simply recognise the intervals than to apply a song to each one. If you can, sit at a piano or keyboard, hold a root note and play the various intervals against it.Its easier and clearer to hear than doing it on the bass.
 25. In the same article it says that a very basic demo was brought in by the guitarist at the start of the session and the band added their parts and recorded it on the same day.
