9.
finally i can contribute to this thread! well... first gig last night... and the main reason i've been a bit quiet over the last few weeks. in a moment of sheer madness three weeks ago i agreed to stand in for a bass player who was on his stag do last night. which left me with 3 weeks and 33 songs to learn. it was a 40th birthday party at the malthouse in rishworth - really great venue except for the slightly odd 'stage' which was behind wooden beams. the staff were amazing and all our food and tea was free.. hurrah! we didn't get on til 10 as the meal went on for longer than expected, and i was still suspiciously lacking nerves, despite the whole flippin' affair being opened by me on bass (2nd half of 'the chain'). i screwed up at various points during the night, but mostly during the root-notey type songs (they all got a little muddled in my brain), and i'm pretty sure noone was too bothered by it, i busked it well enough to be passable. the songs where the bass was more complex were great, and the singer bigged me up massively as i was retuning for 'somebody told me' by the killers - and the guests went absolutely nuts, they were screaming and clapping, even the staff came in to watch! that was such a thrill!! it was such an incredible gig, never mind it being my first. the dancefloor was full all night, as were the tables, which were being danced on, and at one point, they were actually hanging from the rafters (i was just praying no-one was seriously injured, although it would have livened the story up somewhat). we had to turn down at midnight because the locals complained that they could hear the bass (wooo! complaints on my first night!) too clearly.. but we snuck the volume back up for the encore. so, as we finished and i put my bass down, this guy comes wandering up to me, and i got a little nervous as i suspected he was probably the obligatory musician-guest come to tell me how much i sucked, and he was indeed a drummer but in fact, he said some truly amazing things that i never expected to hear. he wasn't the only one, either, and i feared my ego would no longer fit in the car along with all the gear. anyway - end of the night came and after the excitement died down we were given tea and cake (as if things couldn't get any better!) and the band all wrote nice things on my set list. got home about 2:45 just in time for my brain to implode after the busiest three weeks of my life, and i've woken up feeling elated, but a little like i've been beaten up. it's ok, this bass playing lark. x
Hey Mewsie! Sounds fantastic, Im glad you enjoyed it. brilliant! Well done mx
10. I cant wait to see this bass. Matt
11. Umm , actually , A. Changed me mind Matt
12. without trying to chuck a spanner in the works, i thought headstock B. A would be ok, if the first half, ie next to the nut, represented teh rest of the bass by being slightly more in tune with the shape of the horns, ie rounded ( or possibly protruding out a bit more. I hope this makes sense. Good diary this. I hope it all works out OK. Cheers Matt
13.
Could you list the dimensions, please? Looks like a bottom shelf port - it's not rear ported, is it? Are the handles metal? Who built the cab? What type of wood is it made from?
Info would be good Cheers matt
14. [I am around that weekend. where in Bristol are you based? matt
15.
Well I need the space now, so the Ashdown copy is up for £60. I think thats a fair price for a fantastic sounding 15" cab.
Hi. Are you bringing the 15" cab back down to Bristol at all? cheers Matt
16. I still cant play it anywhere near the speed it is supposssed to be played at. Matt
17. I saw this thread and i thought it might be about playing a rocking' gig with a few mates and getting Dido to pleasure me after the encore. or something like that. sorry Matt
18. I will almost certainly buy a better bass once I've learnt how to play the one I have now. i dont know if this is the same as just wanting a new bass for th sake of 'just having another bass' I have no idea where my playing will take me yet, but a hand made bass may well be only thing I go for as I dont much like the look of the majority of stuff out there. matt
19. I use a peavey. admittedly, its an old yeboard combo, but its a great practice amp! matt
20.
It pisses me off to know that they don't want to rock the boat with their bread and butter advertisers. Have a rant about a Dingwall bass (unlikely I know, it's just a name example) and you may get your letter printed. Moan about the sh*te service from Fender or Peavey and you've got no chance as they each take about 6 pages in a mag like that. Another thing (sorry, I'm in a bad mood) When Bassist mag finished, it was supposed to be incorporated into Guitarist mag. It was for about 3 months, then, as the months went by, you're lucky if they condescend to review one crappy £100 bass. Bastards.
...and breaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaath!
21. Its a very small market, and i doubt they can afford to lose the revenue of any advertisers! They still manage to give some excellent gera away tho. I got a free Guy Pratt course, so I'm pretty happy with the mag! Matt
22. Is there a youtube link for this? ..sorry am feeling lazy today. Matt
23. Graceland..paul simon. I loved the album when it first came out, and it reminds me of college. its taken me over 20 years to get a copy! Finally
24. My printer! doh, thats not what you needed to know...right?
25.
In my opinion, it sounds like you should avoid turning the volume up to match the drummer, and instead make sure that the drummer knows that you expect him to match his level to the rest of the band. S.P.
absolutely +1
