1.
Seek out the Welsh Wizard, Eltham Jones in the back of Sound Control in Bristol. Tell him I sent you and he'll be gentle. Go along and play in front of him. He'll then have a very good idea of what kind of action you may feel comfortable with. He can also gove your bass a once over to make sure the nut and frets are all working with you and not against you. I have very low action and very light strings. Works for me but I don't mind a bit of rattle.
Ah, right many thanks for that. although i must say, the last time i was in SC I asked for some help and didnt get any! No one was inetersted in selling me a new bass thath i really cant play very well yet! they probably work on commission were my thoughts, and i wasnt going to spend enough. however, they are still very close to me and do have a wide selection..hmmmm
2.
I've just switched from 040-100 Red Labels to Roto 045-105 and I'm happier with the sound, and they do seem to buzz less on the 5string (after adjusting relief to compensate for greater tension). It is hard work playing chords though. Does anyone use those spring thingies, hand exercisers, that rock climbers use? Any use?
i use one, or at least i used to, but it didnt do anything for my climbing!
3.
What's CP? Close protection? Cheers Mark
indeed it does, but mostly it means you drive people about. I worked for a |TV company so it was huge amount of fun. geena davis is very very tall. fantastic!
4. I used to do CP work for a lot of 'names' god theyre all dull! Hiding demi moore was bloody funny! AB
5.
cheap ibanez soundgear or squier vinatge modified. i love my soundgear, id get the best one you can get in that price range. about the squiers, you wanna play both the precision and the jazz, and tell us what music you like so we can recommend which one would be best for you.
i like the Ibanez, it looks good and i did play a GSR200, which felt really nice. Am not sure about whether to get a passive or active, but so far its a front runner. I havent played teh Squier, bu t i think the Ibanez looks better. Sad way to decide i know. Which ever one i go for itll be difficult to tell as im just starting to learn. I expect that after a year or so, ill have a better idea. Matt (AB)
6.
Try everything you can lay your hands on. If a shop is reluctant to let you try stuff, walk and take your cash elsewhere. For a classic look, the Squier VMJ as mentioned before. For a more contemporary vibe, the Yamahas are IMHO unbeatable value for money. A 6mm action is more than a little high... you can drive a truck under it! Definitely needs to come down. Looks like your best option is to spend your 200 sovs immediately.
Hey Rich, who would you recommend as a bass shop in bristol? Cheers Matt (AB)
7.
It could be worth looking at this thread from a couple of weeks ago... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=11796
Ah, all good , many thanks for that cheers Matt (AB)
8. has anyone ever had any dealings with www.thomann.de? AB
9. I have hugely varied tastes in music, and have tried to play as many in shops as i can, but i dont play so well yet , so am basing my research on look/reveiw etc.Not many reveiws in this price bracket tho. In reality, anything is better than what i have now, which was made by someone about 40 years ago.It sounds sort of ok, but it needs alot of sorting out, as the intonation is not great, and there is no adjustment at all. I asked here on this site yesterday about action height as a sort of default, mine measured 6mm at the 12th fret, which seemed a little high. again there is no adjustment. I just need something, which i know i will change fairly soon, to restart this whole process! cheers AB
10. I'd welcome suggestions on this, say around the £200 mark. Ive looked at shecktor and Ibanez and Yamaha. . this sounds sad but every shop tells me something different. Some one also was a little disparaging about sound c*****l, whats with that? Matt AB
11. Hey Rich, the band looks fun. Will try and make the next gig Matt (AB)
12. who else is in Bristol? AB
13. right, many thankd for that, the fender does at least give a measurement, so ican work from that . I just needed to know where to start. TA AB
14. Is there a default setting for the height of the action on a bass. I know that this is a personal thing, but some kind of guide line would be good. I think that mine is far too high! Cheers
15. Thanks for that! Matt (AB)
16. Yup, thats me...have owned a bass for years, not a very good one, but finally, i picked it up. I sound rubbish, but ill get there! Ha Absolute beginner
17. Just a quick note! Ha! THanks very much to everyone who has had a voice on this, youve all helped. cheers AB
18. Many thanks for the help. It seems to me that all the tascam units are good, so its reallly just about the size and the money. However, the opinions are really good. Varied as well, so it beats the hard sell in the shop. Cheers!
19. ah, right ! many thanks for the link and the help. I think that probably the size and weight may swing it for me, plus you dont get to carry Cds about. i tend to lose them! Cheers Matt
