1.
A bass is a classic when people start saying things like "Sounds a bit like a *enter classic bass here*". They also have to be fairly common, otherwise, they aren't that classic. I'm sure everyone could point to a bass that sounds/looks fantastic, and they wished they owned, but because they price is many many thousands of hard earned pounds, and there are only 100 being made, it would be difficult for it to become a classic. Classics tend to be the ones that change everything. The P has it's own unique tone, and changed bass indefinitely. It made bass easy, transportable, loud and relatively cheap. That's isn't the formula for a classic, but again, you can point to a stingray and say it's a classic, because of it's tone.
I think this is poor reasoning. Ford GT40......classic, but not many made. I understand what you mean, but just because it's rare, doesn't mean it's not a classic. It's a funny one really. Now, us bass players really do push the boundries with our guitars. We have active, coil taps, fan frets, very different scale lenghts. All this is deemed great and it surely is BUT does it make them classic. (me, I just love P basses but I have an XL2 which I consider classic because it pushed the boundaries and a violin bass, same again) If you think about guitars for a minute, all the biggest makers tend to keep it simple and most stuff really is, tele, strat, les paul, SG ish. Dean ML = Explorer. Aria PE = Les Paul. Guitars don't really change from the 'classic' designs. the only really active thing that goes on with guitars is the EMG thing. waffling again. So, I reckon it's a classic IF it's been copied by someone else on a grand scale OR if if I've got one (ho ho), OR if it's totally limited for example the status buzzard. Just my rubbish opinion, for what it's worth. I love guitars and basses and could stare at them all day. Good thread BTW
 2. Yes that looks like one of the Phil range. Phil Hadler from Whitsable in Kent, commisioned and imported some guitars starting about 10 years ago (I think). My local store in Folkestone, Kent had loads. The electric basses I played were truly amazing. Through neck, 2 pickups and active. They retailed at about £250. Looks like you've got yourself a geat bass enjoy
 3.
My Bravewood is as new, I sort of like the relicing on Johns Guitars but I wanted to wear mine out on my own. Yours looks pretty good and being used in the way you are using it just looks the part. I would love to get another Bravewood but think the Mrs would soon stop that idea in its tracks.
agreed. What colour is yours and what style? I've got another on order with him that's not to be reliced. For my wife's 50th birthday. (she plays bass in my pub rock band and she really likes my Sting bass) . A daphne blue '63 (year of her birth)
 4.
Nice, but the drummer needs to up his game. No octobans, no gong drum. Shocking
actually the octobans are to the side, on his left. They are clear acrylic and not so easy to see (and belong to the guitarist) But the gong drum would be fab. Poor bloke can't afford to do it. Even the Andy Summers tele (that's on it stand and not being played) belongs to me. If only Stewart and Andy would join!! (I tweeted Stewart about us and he replied, so at least he knows about us)
 5. My mother-in-law bought me a mandolin and a book on how to play. Great pressie as I've been thinking about one for ages. I can play a G chord, so far. should keep me busy for hours
 6. Here's a few pictures of the Bravewood in action I think it really looks the part
 7.
So I was in london yesterday and saw some nashes in the flesh - the finishing was awful - I could do a more authentic looking relic finish with £12 of spray cans- and it wouldn't be so matt finish. anyway rant over. each to their own
I agree I'm afraid. I thought they looked terrible (close up anyway) I've now got my bravewood (Sting style '57 P bass) and it looks and feels incredible
 8. thanks for the kind words. It's a fun band to do because The police always were and still are my favourite band
 9. So back in about 1987 I traded my old Manson Explorer bass in at Peter Cook's in Hanwell (I actually did the deal with Peter himself) for an Aria Pro 2 SBR-150. This is the model with the zebrawood front and back, 2 pickups and active. This bass had been modded by Peter. It had different actives in it and the red light (active light i presume) didn't work. In late 1990 maybe even 91 I traded it in at Roka's in London (I think) for my trusty white P bass which I still have. Question is, has anyone on this site got my old bass. I broke one of the knobs on it and I think I may have put a black metal one on as a replacement. (can't really rememeber) I've got one picture of this bass, which I'll scan later today and post up. Merry Christmas to you all or happy holidays or season's greetings
 10.
This bass is awesome, it really oozes character with that relic job. I bet you're chuffed to bits with it!
yes, absolutely loving it
 11.
I hadnt even heard of Bravewood basses until a few days ago on this site. His website is very cool and his work is outstanding! Your bass is stunning, congratulations. Btw do you do the full Sting thing, i.e. sing as well as play the bass?? Its one thing replicating Stings bass parts - but a whole different story trying to emulate his vocals! I speak from bitter experience of playing Police covers lol.
yes, I try and go the whole hog. I even try to match outfits with the different basses. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WynWzIiixYM I haven't got any pictures of the new bass in action as it's only done one gig. Pics have been taken but I've not seen them yet. It's a great bass, it almost plays itself and the neck feels perfect
 12. that's the same bag I use. It's excellent. Snug fit and room to put some leads. buy it!!

 14.
Start with one colour only, and concentrate on technique in the beginning. Absolutely avoid thin and medium needles, and go for the jumbo ones. This has to do with loop size, and you can relax more in your digits' muscles. Now as to styles, different schools exist, but I'd say that it's probably best to start with weft knitting, and wait with warp knitting until you have a secure technique. That said: cable knitting is far easier than everyone thinks, so you can still get exiting results even as a beginner. Good luck! best, bert PS, as to the band, only you can decide, but it does look hopeless from here. .
I'm with Bert on this one. as for the band, just tell them you're not enjoying it and leave. There's no point making yourself miserable. 4 years ago, I left the band I was in. They had ( at that point) been going for 21 years and had a great following. All good players and nice people. Roadie was/is/always will be a nob head. I just stopped enjoying it and after a little soul searching decided to leave and put a new band together. I started to enjoy playing again
 15. get yourself a '57 and we'll compare notes ) (make sure it hasn't got a modern date written in the pick up cavity!!)
 16. you can get a jap 70s reissue. It'll be an import. I've got one (but it's a fretless one). It should have USA pickups in it too www.mijfenders.com had one but it's sold. here's one on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Japan-70-Reissue-Precision-Bass-PB70ASH-/261131240068?pt=Guitar&hash=item3ccca28284
 17.
Or you could say, it's a fake, depending on your perspective. The guy is obviously very skilled, and I don't think he's out to fool anyone but it doesn't seem to stop with the external features. IIRC, I've seen one of his creations, a 'replica' of a 60s Jazz, which had an authentic looking neck stamp. There's potential for deception, whether intended or not, once an instrument has changed hands a few times over the years. It's a Bravewood, not a Fender, and should be clearly labelled as such.
is it soapbox time!! if you knew anything about vintage fenders you would know it's not an original. The date in the pickup cavity is the biggest giveaway.
 18.
So why is there a Fender decal on the headstock?
because I put it there.
 19. Here's a couple more without the pickguard the checking looks great and it really has the Sting vibe without the guard
 20. it looks great in the flesh. I've removed the pickguard and it looks even more like Stings.
 21. just to update, picked it up from John, on thursday, and my God, what a phenominal bass. Plays incredibly well. Perfect neck shape (for me). Just need to get it gigged
 22.
I love John's basses and have been on at him to make me one... I'll have to wait for funds though his prices seem ver reasonable. Great score... you will enjoy.
His prices are very reasonable. I fancy getting another one already and I've not even picked this one up yet
