4. Thanks for that J I hadnt seen that before very interesting and i think the way to go,as i suppose any decent bridge is going to be the same, i do like the look of the hipshot though!! im hopefully getting a new preamp fitted so ill get it done at the same time- cheers again - lee
5. From what i can gather, the WAV is made in china from beech, with rosewood board while the NXT is made in the chzech rep from maple, with ebony board ( like the more expensive CR series) the NXT will be better made and bridging the gap between the WAV and CR. I really loved my WAV and regret selling it, when i get another it,ll be an NXT ( unless a nice CR5, comes up cheap )
6. Thanks for the replies everybody, it looks like shimming the neck might be the way to go!!, i assume that means making the neck higher up in the pocket? still i am favouring the more vintage looks so ill have a think, the BA2 has been on ages and is kinda part of the bass now. It is a JV squire - lee
7. Hi everybody 15 years ago, the bass doc fitted a badass2 to my 82 squire jazz, now i loved what it did to the tone, it was a noticable improvement, the thing is i never got the action as low as id like since, for example slapping (an we all know jazz basses sound great slapped) was never the same as the original bridge, it clacks as opposed to pinging on the G string (weird description i know) and just never sounded right, i suppose it isnt hitting the frets as much, now i have read you can shim the neck which i may look into as for 15 years of setups it,s still not been a low action, or i was thinking of going back to a more original design as technology has moved on a lot in the last 15 years (especialy amps), my main thoughts were the hipshot vintage bridge(i think nordys use these) or perhaps the gotoh 201 both are quite sturdy looking and the hipshot is brass so should offer some of the same sonic benefits of a badass but not as tall. Has anyone on here done this themselves? any thoughts or insight would be appreciated, as im just thinking about this at this stage- thanks for any comments - lee
8. That looks great i want one!!! hmm creamy!!!
9. Thats a lovely bass clarky!!! Ive always loved alembics, but alas a lottery win bass, much like a fodera couldnt be more diffrent to the humble P bass, im very recently rediscovering fleetwood mac, and john mcvie was a precision and alembic man, great tones!!! your in good company- all the best - lee
10. Cheers matt!!! Cant wait to see your black tiger, is it the same one as the pics on facebook? the figured walnut on those is just sublime, id love to see some more pics of Walldav,s 25th anniversary fusion elite, now thats my perfect smith right there!!!. Is yours the black tiger or the black tiger elite? im a nosey get!!! you must PM me what that thing set you back so in theory now you have your dream bass, when you go to the royal northern you can concentrate on music rather than chasing tone dragons like me cant wait to hear the tiger in action ive never played one. Geoff in answer to your question, the smith i have isnt heavy at all, not sure of the precise weight, but its a lot lighter and more comfortable than the warwick jazzman 5 i had previously, looking forward to some more smith pics as i too have been a long time fan, ever since i saw freddie washington playing his on my "bass as a solo instrument" video many moons ago, lovely tone and i dont think they are ugly at all, each to their own- cheers - lee Ps Matt - time to change your username to - EL BLACK TIGER#1
11. Thanks for the info Eude!!! i really do love the sunbeams, but i would like a little more snap from them (the d,addarios have a great brightness, but sound very harsh compared with the DR,s and they die very quickly and sound awful when they do) so the nickel lo riders sound ideal, there was alink to an excellent shootout between the DR line that ed friedland had done, he recorded them all, so you can compare them (the lo riders had the best slap sound i thought). As i said something between the sunbeams and hi beams will be spot on, as i dont like stiff feeling strings, the round core strings are really flexable. cheers - lee PS - Sunbeams/hi beams = round core = flexible nickel/steel lo riders = hex core = stiff
12. +1 on the DR Sunbeams, they are my absolute favourite string(i have them on my jazz), a little bit of zing initialy but wears off fairly quickly leaving a nice warm but very clear sound, just perfect, i used D,addario XL,s for years and you cant beat them on cost/tone as they are very good but as yo say quite bright and harsh compared to the sunbeams, i currently have fatbeams on my 5 string and they are very warm and smooth for steels, not much bightness at all really, i was very surprised, i am very tempted to try the lo rider nickels after the earlier post, although i remember trying the steel lo riders and not liking them at all. Anyway its all subjective and a very expensive learning curve finding "your" string, good luck with the quest
13. Just sold my Radial Bigshot to james, he paid very quickly and communication was spot on, great guy , thanks James - lee
14. We dont have one, so im starting a thread!!! My Ken Smith BSR 5MW, its sounds amazing and has the best neck ive ever played on a five, flamed maple core. walnut top and back, mahogany stringers with a morado fingerboard, very warm and clear tone which cuts through the mix amazingly. 18.
Hi Matt Brian Barret at The Low End in the US has an ultra-rare Smith BMT Elite fretted 6 for sale at the moment. These are the best Smiths of all IMO (I used to own one, as well as numerous other BSRs). I know it would mean buying sight unseen from the US, but I'd be astonished if it was anything less than incredible, and expensive. Cheers Gareth
WOW!!! thats amazing, put the series/parallel switches in and lose a string and i,d have my perfect smith right there, i feel a smith porn thread coming on. Thats ya baby matt right there, might need to add another 2k to your budget though lee
