Bugcrusher Micro
Looked into it myself - part of the circuit/chip set is no longer made and folks can't find them - I assume why he stopped making them. Bugbrand still do a bug crusher, but it's more of a desktop unit than a pedal. I played with one and they are great sounding. I have a FrantaBit on the way now as IMHO it's the best bitcrusher available on the market today (The Geiger Counter is amazing, but is a distortion pedals with elements of bit crushing - as a pure crusher, the FrantBit is very special). If you can get a BugCrusher - don't ever sell it on!
I'll look into the Frantabit, thanks! Bitcrushing sounds amazing on bass, in my opinion. Definitely one of the cooler things to use.
Very rare these days. Not made anymore and seem they literally never come up for sale. Iron Ether Frantabit is the closest sounding I've heard recently.
If only I could get a clone or something.. Hmm.

Anyone know where I can get one of these things? Or a similar box?
  4.
Oh, OK then... what about... Shep on Bass - Interview: John Davis I really don't think John needs much of an introduction around these parts. Bunker Studios in NYC & Nerve. Nuff' said? Thought so... Enjoy! Shep
When I saw this I quite literally fell out of my chair. Well played sir. ..now if only I could get some info on that Xero and "Crazy Box".. o_O I mean.. low pass and high pass sides? What is this madness?!
  5. I think the main kind of.. identity battle in this whole argument for is this: "Couldn't a guitar do the same thing, but better, and with more variety?" This argument has caused me to constantly decide and redecide if I want to be a bass player or a guitar player. I mean, looking at the typical rock/pop/whatever arrangement, being a guitar player is much more interesting.. you get solos, riffs, fills, chords, whatever. Now, to tie it into the effects debate, it seems like it's a lot easier to use 'em on guitar. Stuff like distortion/overdrive especially, among other things. This may actually be true. The typical "role" of the bassist is to fill in the low end while the guitar gets the high end. This already gives us a few disadvantages: -Lower frequencies are harder to hear, and the bass is generally pretty quiet in the mix -Bass EQ'd to have lots of low end sounds muddy, and you absolutely have to have mids to cut through -Bassists must keep that low end no matter what, otherwise it sounds muddy and undefined So for the most part, it seems to me that overall, the bass is somewhat inferior to the guitar: less strings, muddy chords, less versatility with effects, etc. But what it does have is a good sound; it has a certain growl and a kind of.. dark thing going on, and it fills in the low end, which someone has to do. I however think that if effects are used on bass correctly, it can make our role as the bassist a lot more interesting than simply improvising around the chords of the song. The best effects on bass are ones that emphasize that darkness, like maybe a little bit of growling overdrive, or delay if you want to get fancy. That's the eternal struggle with effects though; you use them too zealously, and you lose your low end and your tone, and you just become a guitarist with less range. Hope that made sense..
  6. What's a record? I suggest anything by Rage Against the Machine (if you're into that kind of stuff), it's really fun/energetic and easy to improvise over. Other easy stuff: Smiths, Nirvana, Pixies. Moderate stuff: Franz Ferdinand, Strokes, Death From above 1979, etc.
  7. George L's for cables, and Diago Powerstation for the supply. Pedaltrain pedalboards are popular, you can put all the extra cabling etc. under it as well as the power supply, and Diago also makes some pretty good boards. Cheapest place for anything is ebay. The Diago Powerstation is a daisy chain but it works well without noise or other interference.
  8. A luthier in my area makes guitar/basses. http://www.wlguitars.com/instrument/8s Pretty cool stuff I think!
  9. Oop, on second thought I'm kind of GAS'd out for a delay right now, but I'm sure tons of people on BC would put it to better use (seeing as all of my guitars and amps are complete sh*te). Sorry bout that..
  10.
nah ill sell it via basschat. Isn't everything cheap in the USA anyway?
Sounds good. Cheap? Have you SEEN the cost of Legos these days?!
  11.
first dibs for you then. It's got a much bigger cap on the input and I think slightly bigger on the output so it lets through a bit more bass than normal, also got speed and depth knobs and you can push it to do lots of odd phasing stuff at the extreme depth settings. Pretty cool Are you really in the US though?
I'll pay shipping if you put a listing up on ebay when I'm ready! (in other words, when I'm not broke)
  12. Hey, I'll buy the small clone off you once I get some money, I need that Kurt Cobain sound for the 'ol 6-string..
  13. Whenever I see a post in this thread I know it's gonna be something good.. Thanks for posting this Shep, I really like the sound of that burninator in the demo, sounds like a more natural mammoth.
  14.
Not a fan then? Apparently it's not so bad with a clean blend. Put it on ebay and you might get your money back.
Sounds good on the 'ol 6-string to thicken up the bass fuzz I have on it already, but other than that.. just too harsh/digital sounding for me. I've looked on ebay, and I can make at least 5$ of a resell.
  15. ..damn GAS.. 36 hard-earned dollars down the drain!
  16.
..and i can't afford them. GAS list is growing, wallet is shrinking. Aaaargh.. !!! currently need an FEA Labs Dual band distortion, Iron Ether Xerograph, Fuzzrocious Grey Stache, and some sort of pitch shift with exp control that is smaller than my bedroom. they're just the ones i need. never mind the one's i want. damn those pedal builders !
This is actually the most perfect thread ever ...damn GAS, I need a flanger, a delay, a whammy, and 3 iron ether pedals.
  17.
There must be a total of 3 bass pedals that sound good to my ears - the rest sound .......well, crap - and yet I keep seeing 'em held in high esteem by some people.....(Big Muff springs to mind)..... Surely if you've got a good basic rig, a preamp, chorus and compressor that's all you need?? Am I missing something or is it just clever marketing by manufacturers?
What did you just say?! Plus, bass synths sound cool. You're going to have to provide specific examples here, because the synths I've heard sound amazing.
  18. MI Audio Pollyanna does that, as well as the EHX stuff. Edit: The Digitech Whammy series works decently for this as well, just get a IV or Drop Tune for better tracking.

    Zoom B9.1ut

Well, they're basically a bunch of digital samples stuffed into the same box. There's no way it's going to sound good. Multi-Efx might be good if you don't know what effects you want, or what brands to buy, but for a regularly gigging musician in a relatively popular band, you're going to want something real.

The Moog Midi Murf is pretty similar. http://www.moogmusic.com/products/moogerfoogers/mf-105m-midi-murf Not sure how the price compares though.
  21.
I'll do a demo soon. It's massive! On another note... A few pages back I mentioned my 'summer project' - to use my current pedals to create a 'stripped down' board for smaller shows and for backing MC's etc, rather than performing as Our Helical Mind in general. I've spent a few weeks planning and the board I settled on was a Diago Showman - large by many bassists standards, but tiny for me. It's was the most suitable size for my essentials. Its not powered or cabled yet (plugs in sockets to show me how much space I have) but here is draft 1... Proposed signal chain is... Stage Clix Wireless > Boss OC-2 > TC Electronic Polytune Mini > FUZZROCIOUS Grey Stache > WMD Geiger Counter > WMD Super FatMan > Custom Iron Ether Xerograph (in the space marked with tape) > Moogerfooger Cluster Flux > TC Electronic Flashback Delay The MP-201 will control 3 parameters of the Xero and the feedback of the Cluster Flux. It's likely to change... But this should work nice!
I think I could almost understand this one. Maybe. On a good day.
  22.
Hope everyone's enjoying my weird little set up!! Thanks again to shep for taking his time to interview me and all you dudes for reading it
I've gotta get myself one of those bass distortions, they sound awesome.
  23.
isnt that just a truebypass pedal? would that actually swtich my amp between operate and mute? andy
It's a loop. Basically, it allows you to either bypass a part of your signal chain or go through it. With nothing attatched, I would think it would mute your signal.
  24.
Moment of realisation: after my massive pedal purge last month, I've gone from way over 20 down to a meager 8 effects pedals, and even then we're talking very utilitarian pedals. What is wrong with me?! I really hope my M9 delivers in the delay/modulation departments when I FINALLY get to try it out in a few weeks. Is the EHX freeze really as good as everyone seems to say it is? I kind of wish that I had picked up Silent Fry's on here for cheaps when it came up just to see.
I can sell ya my freeze if you want (over ebay), I never use the thing.
  25. You could use one of these: http://www.loop-master.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=30 Just don't plug anything into the send and return.
