1. It honestly sounded fantastic. It's the best single 15 cab i've ever heard. The weight was another factor which pushed me away from the orange. (I had just had my knee reconstructed when I bought my cab!)
2. ha ha, looks like I'm not alone! I couldn't believe the diff myself .. I now sound exactly like the bass lines I come up with in my head I went for chromes myself can't see me going back now. I've also been dabbling with some foam under my strings at the bridge .. it sounds great at low volumes but tonight when Mrs T popped out to the shops I cranked my amp and realised it was cutting out too much of the sound when I was slapping and i'm pretty sure it wouldn't punch through the mix anything like it does without .. I'm gonna keep messing though.
3.
@ Dave Tipping - What made you go for the Phillips valves then? I've just got myself a Wood & Tronics and it's quite hot, but also seems to 'mud' up the sound of the Terror a bit, so some different valves would be worth a shot. Haven't had a chance to really tweak the gain and all that though to accommodate the bass yet though mind. Need to get myself a decent cab first though! Quite fancy an all orange rig, but don't want a 4x10 and reckon the 1x15 would be too wooly but I don't know! These amps do kick ass though...I was running it through an SVT 610HLF last year using a Precision or Gibson Grabber, punk rock madness...it was insane!!!
I was simply following happy jacks "how to" like for like! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/134869-re-valving-an-orange-bass-terror/page__hl__re%20valve he went for AT7 WA's as they only deliver around 2/3rds of the gain an AX7 (which the stock tubes are). The gain of valves can vary from valve to valve.. as much as 30% (apparently) It's quite possible some peoples negative experiences with these amps is down to a particularly gainy ax7. I read somebody talking about using an OB115 cab with their terror .. DO IT! ha ha .. that was the set up that sold me the amp in the first place, I just couldn't justify the extra £250 over the laney cab. The orange cab did sound better though.
4. It totally depends on what music you're playing .. for the rock/punk covers band i was just in the stock valves couldn't have sounded better! I'm now playing in a 6-10 piece funk/jazz band and I was just looking for something a bit softer .. it has cleared the sound up a bit as well, without loosing any of the niceness! It's a doddle to do ..for £30 why not take a punt? The worst that is going to happen is you rathered it before .. then you swap your old ones back in and pop the new ones on e-bay! If you're being even tigher than that then only swap out V1 (on the right hand side). How anybody can say thy don't like the sound of these little beasts is beyond me! .. or perhaps they haven't tried one with a fender p with flats on!
5. I changed the valves in mine tonight .. set of 12AT7WA / ECC81 PHILIPS off ebay. WOW .. I loved the sound of the amp before .. but never really got the gain above 9 o'clock .. tonight I was playing with the gain at 12 and it has made a significant improvement in the volume of the silky smooth tone coming out of my cab. I played for years through an all valve ampeg set up and I can honestly say I've never been happier with my sound, the little orange beast NAILS the valve tone without any of the hassle of a 'real' valve amp. Seriously the smoothest punchiest amp I've ever played through.
6.
one of those Korg pandora things works fine for me. I got one second hand and it is fine for when the kids are asleep.
I second this! love my little pandora ,, on really neat feature is you can alter the pitch of the line in for learning songs in different keys etc . such a handy little thing .. has a built in tuner, drum machine, phrase trainer .. the list goes on. hundreds of diff sounds.
7. I would be totally interested in a px with a very good condition Ampeg Ba115 .. only issue is distance!
8.
Does anyone use the OBT for Funk/Soul/R&B stuff? The reviews of this amp are always concerning rock/metal, but I wonder how it handles that styles of music. I'm hoping it will blow my mind with an old Precision with the right flats on it!
Ha ha, Just moved from a rock band into a funk / soul band and chucked some flats on my P. The amp sounds fantastic, it is such a pure tone that comes out, it's really deep but never muddy (unless you crank the gain) having said that the highs sing out as well .. I played with an old ampeg v4b for years and this is the only amp which has come close. I've just ordered http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310219485090?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_500wt_951 to stick in as once we're gigging I'm hoping that'l give me a little more clean headroom. That said the stock valves only get a little gritty around 9 on the gain .. with that I never got the volume above 12 o'clock and that was without usually being di'd and in a LOUD rock band! What cab are you planning on using with the head?
9. .. looking sweet man! loving your style. one tip for your next job is as above spray your frame black before stapling the grille cloth, i did this with my cab which allowed me to shove some thin black foam between the frame and cloth on completion to get it nice and tight. Another 'top tip' for the piping is to glue a small piece of plastic into the hollow of the cut end and stick it into the other cut end it gives you a really good join .. I struggle to find the join on my own cab. Looking forward to seeing your future projects!
10. About to order some chromes (D'addario ECB81's to be precise) and according to their chart I would be fine with 'Long scale' .. but according to the internet I def. need extra long scale? If it helps to know I string my bass through the bridge as opposed to through the body and it's a 2001 American Standard. On a separate note anybody know the best place to get them from? In terms of cost and speed? Found them pretty cheap on fleabay (less than £20) but amazon seems to be the best i can find at £30 and delivery by Tuesday. Cheers Dave
11. get a P. You'll find a good one no bother for that cash .. I doubt if you'll find a decent Sandberg for that dosh, but TRBboy might prove me wrong!
12. That's a very good point .. it's quite possible that actually I've been building other muscles that mean loading the band PA and amps etc. doesn't tire me out and my playing is less affected? To compare the effects on your fingers twiddling with a grip gadget with a bulky weight lifter not having "stamina" is retarded. My fingers aren't pumped up and bulging with muscles! .. I would say that my fingers, hands and forearms are stronger as a result of my grip thingy and I can say it really hasn't had a negative effect on my playing.
13. ... i've just realised it's not actually a "grip master" I use .. it's a "Vari-grip" http://www.planetwaves.com/pwProductDetail.Page?productid=510&productname=Vari_Grip .. it really is a great bit of kit for keeping your fingers working .. and building calluses between gigs. There really is no substitute for technique and practice, esp. if you are starting out. For old gits like myself who don't practice as much as we should .. but gig all the time I'd say it's perfect.
14. It totally depends what you want .. my current band plays in a drop tuning and I find newish heavy guage roundwounds give me exactly what I need.
15.
Strength and stamina are two different things. As discussed, minimal strength is required to fret a string. To find out just how much, try fretting a string without the thumb on the back of the neck. These gadgets build gripping strength, which is not required for playing bass. I am sure they have their uses elsewhere. Stamina, and dexterity are what is needed. These involve the lifting of the fingers off of the frets and onto another fret, (the opposite of gripping) without getting in each other's way. Again, these grip gadgets are useless in achieving this. The weight lifter and the gymnast come to mind here. Each need a different training approach in order to achieve their different goals.
... Minimal strength is required for fretting a string but holding your arm up and playing for 3hours plus 3 nights a weekend after sitting at a desk most weekdays takes finger and forearm stamina ... Something I've found my grip gadget perfect for. It isn't a strugle to push down but quickly fiddling with it has def. Improved the dexterity of my left hand and my hand genuinely never feels tired at gigs. Obviously sitting playing your guitar all day long would be far better .. but for some people that's simply not possible.
16. +1 on turning your amp up and playing softer .. having said that I sit with a grip master at work (mainly as a stress reliever!) .. it definitely builds hand / finger and forearm stamina. It's been a long time since I've had a marty mcfly moment on stage.
17. If it's still about the first weekend in June I'm at a stag do in Newcastle. I'd happily take it off your hands for fifty notes.
18. Welcome to the forum Paul, I've played in the black abbot a couple of times. Quite a good crowd up there!
19. Worst one I've ever done was for one of the biggest gigs my last band had done (for which we provided the pa and did the sound etc.) Went OTT making sure we had spare leads and separating everything out into individual bags (don't ask why! i've never done this before) arrived there un-packed everything set everything (physically) up ..then realised I'd forgotten the bag with ALL the kettle leads in it!! Thankfully the organiser worked in an office near the venue so me and him dashed there and ripped the kettle leads out of all the computers we could find! Proper 'brown pants' moment though .. the trip home and back would have taken up half of the gig! DOH.
20. If it is for recording just buy a long speaker cable and sit the head in another room ... if it's for live get a life!
21. Very nice playing dude ... Mrs T heard the music and thought I was looking at some soft pron, ha ha (no really!)
