1.
I get up on stages, well the corner of a pub really and do the entertaining bit,I play the bass guitar, and have done for 35 years now,so perhaps I may be a bass player??Well after all these years when Im intoduced to people as a musician, they allready know I play bass, just from the way I look???
I get that as well. Strange isnt it ?
2. Only skimmed this thread, so someone might have already said it. But ordinary common or garden sunflower oil from yer local supermarket works fine. Of course it wont smell of Lemons or Strawberries, or whatever, but it does the job.
3. Hows about John Ford from The Strawbs ? I'd forgotten him till I dug out Burstin at the Seams. The albums not quite as good as I remembered it, but still some nice lines there. What I was listening to when I started playing, but could never pay any of them right back then.
4.
If its any help, it looks a lot like my old Eros ( not E-Ros) Which I bought in 73 for £69. I think they were imported by [s]Rosetti[/s] and made by Matsumoku. They were out on a few different names.
Dunno what I was thinking of, should have said Rose Morris. Mine wasnt plywood, its a one piece body made of some sort of orange coloured wood. The headstock is made of two pieces of what looks like maple. Back the £69 with a hard case was expensive but bearable, (a new Fender Precision was £125 in the same shop)a weeks wages was probably around £30, but £180 now.... Hmm You could get something with a better name probably. But I still love mine
5. Dr Feelgood, Chess Masters. Only bought it last week & hadnt heard it before, but its been on constantly since. I know a lot of people knock the Feelgoods as being just a Tribute act these days, but this really is good. Theres not a duff track on it, altthough the 'recorded live in the studio' sounds like a bit of an exaggeration. Phil Mitchell really is a good solid Rock n Roll Bass player of the first order, http://www.drfeelgood.de/cd_chess.htm
6. Its a great idea, but cant help wondering if theres a catch. I wonder if averytime you hit a bum note or forget an intro he'll look into your eyes and say "And how did that make you feel" Before telling you that its your parents fault as they didnt give you enough attention when you were a baby.

Mins has soapbar humbucker looking pups, but you cant see whats on that one. I still have it, and it still plays and sounds great, lovely growly blues sound, Plays better than some of the Fenders I've tried. A bit heavy though.
8. Only skipped through this thread quickly, we get complaints about CCTV DVRs being noisy - cos they are, usually, and two or more together sounds like a vacuum cleaner if you put them in a cupboard. sometimes. Puttint them on a solid base, ie a paving slab or a piece of heafty kitchen worktop helps, but obviously if theyre rack mounted you cant, especially if theres a door and a back on a timplate rack cabinet it makes things worse. Just wondered if anybody on here has actually tried soundproof paint. Sounds like an april fools joke really doesnt it ?
9.
Hahahahah instant flashback to grotty old rehearsal rooms, more so the black and silver predecessor to that hi tech later model! They always had the knackered old folded cabs too!
Used one of the older ones in a rehearsal rooms near Bilston only last year, I'd forgotten how bad they were.
10.
Tried repairing Peavey B/W where the cone edging had lifted from the metal frame - age caused glue to fail. It was not a good result (I am pretty fair at repairs - usually) There is a good amount of info about how to recone available - shims to set voice coil in correct position seems to be the secret. What is blown? describe the damage - cone damage to paper can be fixed with varying degrees of success.
Couple of times in the past I have found open circuit speakers to be a bad connection where the flexible braid is soldered to the coil, just had to melt the plastic sealant with a soldering iron and re do it. It causes a weird distortion as it makes and breaks when the cone moves. always worth a try, much cheaper than a re cone and if the cone or coil is duff you got nothing to lose.
11.
Fair point. I'm a southerner by birth, but have lived and worked in and around Brum since my first job in 1973, so I almost feel like I belong.
I once heard somebody say you can always tell a brummie by how he wears the shamrock in his turban...
12. Cant say I remember the name, I remember The Jameson Raid though. I'd stopped playing by mid 77 . Barrell Organ was a good gig on a Saturday night, even if you did have to pay to use their house PA. Was it like the Rebeccas/Barbs deal we got offered, You got Barbs on a Sunday night as long as you did Rebeccas for half the fee ? I wont mention the [s]price [/s]pittance they were offering, but the rest band I was with at the time, The Remoulds, wouldnt do it for the price, which is one of the reasons I quit. They werent from brum so didnt understand. i'd seen so many class acts at Barbs, that I woulkd almost have paid them. wasnt so keen on doing Rebeccas though.
13. Only just seen this. Any chance of adding me to the list ?
14.
I was at a many of those gigs and at least one of them is a band I was in.
C'mon, which one ? I might remember you. Pity it doesnt go back a year or two earlier. Pre punk Barbarellas was a geat venue for the time.
15. just spotted this. Although i was at a fair few of them. why anyone would bother to compile a list like that I cant imagine. Rest of the sites got good bits. http://birminghammusicarchive.com/memories-of-brum-gigs-77-79-where-you-there/
16. With that set list, they should have been able to wing it. After I had a long long break from playing I came across similar things a few times. Usually people who had gigged a bit at some time in their lives, got married/jobs/life got in the way etc etc. then one day aged 40 decided to try and re live the youth they never really had. Spent some of the redundancy or the endownment on new gear that they couldnt have afforded back when. The new and expensive gear that they were not familiar with was often the first sign. Rehearsing for ever would have been the next. I'm not knocking people who want to start again after a long break, I did it myself. but a lot of em were deluded, thinking they were better than they were.and liked the idea of being in a band more than the work involved. I should think guitar shops love people like that, they have money to spend, and are probably back a year later to sell the hardly used gear back to them. .
17. [sub]Parking and useable gear is a must, and reasonably clean and not smelly.[/sub] [sub]Theres one in Brum, wont mention the name, but parking can be a pain, the Bass gear was probably good once, but its old and knackered, and one particular room smelled like a sewer. I have heard the same tale about a Rat jumping out of the Bass Drum a few times from different people, I dont believe its quite that bad, but you get the point. Theres a few rooms though, so maybe the bands I was with just got the bad ones.[/sub] [sub]Also, heating and a fan, theyre usually in old buildings, so too hot in summer and bloody cold in winter. One place I been to wouldnt let us use the Calor heater for more than the first half hour - Calr Gas ? Never went back there. As for kids trashing the place/gear. CCTV and kkeping an eye on them should help.[/sub]
18.
My boss Lyndon has a lot of ties to the Brum and Black Country music scene... http://www.laney.co.uk/history.php
Yeah, I remember Laney had part of Devonshire House, the old Birds Custard factory back in the mid 70s. Was a useful source of transformers for me, and they were thoroughly nice blokes There still might be a few amps other than Laneys around with their trannies in them. There were a few bands around Brum using Laney PA gear with Sabbath Stencilled all over it back then as well I remember.. I did speak briefly to a guy there about a job, but had an offer a job with a car from an Electronics firm so I forgot the idea. Shame really, the job only lasted a few months.
19.
Brummagem has always been a fast changing city:
Agreed, and its been multicultural since the industrial revolution. But where the luftwaffe failed in the 40s, the town planners obliterated most of the architechture in the 60s, just 15 years later, and replaced it wit the soulless concrete that you see in the - mid 70s ? - Telly Savalas film. Then demolished most of it again, and replaced it with either more concrete boxes, or tacky cheapo looking eyesores like Selfridges, which looks like its made of old hubcaps and is already looking old and tattered, you have to admit its unusual to rebuild on that scale after just 40 years.
20. Never had a Tesla apart but. Coils that are not carrying current usually break at one end or the other. So might it be worth dismantling it to see if you can unwind a bit and re connect it ?
21.
Even Telly Savalas loved Birmingham
Half of the Brum on that films been demolished and replaced with something worse still. Must be the only city centre thats been demolished and rebuilt twice since the 1960s
22. Lots of good stuff came out of Brum. Nice to see somebody else has noticed. Most people seem to thinks its was just Ozzy. But whats a 'long term brummie' ? You either are or you aint surely..
23. Thr Grapes in Stafford. Realisd after i was halfway there that I'd fotgot my strap, managed with a spare one that was way too short, to be comfortable so I felt a bit like an 80s slapper, Tuner packed up, but luckily I found a spare in me bag, strap came off during the soundcheck, so my P hit the deck. seems OK though. Stage sound there was weird, could only really hear Bass, but 3 feet from the stage I was too quiet. and my sweaty hands problem has come back with a venegance for some reason. Went down OK. although not exactly a packed house. Friendly crowd in there.
