It really sounds like Mark Adams of the band Slave. Its exactly his tone and playing style. This is only a guess based on the tone and playing style of the bass on the track though. As a reference. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hMfFpmJGCr4&...feature=related Sounds very similar playing styles, lots of slides and chordal popping. Edit: Beaten by a minute!

Oh as well as the girl next door
Incidently i was jamming with a band last night playing Yes's "Parallels" with the BB5000 You sir are a man of good taste, So much so that it completely outclasses my tender 23 years.

Hey guys. Looking for a new project or band to join in Bristol. All genres considered apart from singer/songwriter acoustic based stuff. So this means i am looking from anything, Death metal to funk, Jazz to Pop. If anyone can help me out that'll be cool -Rob.

Dont worry, i have seen it, thats gorgeous however its one less string then i would have wanted, Nice colour combo That and i dont have the money anyway But in january i should have 1K plus to spend on something nice if i can find another P5 deluxe in the montego black/gold scratchplate combo i am likely to go for that. Otherwise i know a man with a first year musicman Stingray i might go for. (Though i would have to pay in installments. -Rob.
Nice cover, Shockwave. Remember that a cover doesn't have to be exact. It's your interpretation of the music That Yamaha BB5000 sounds great, btw! And I love your left hand technique. Looks just like mine... Neat and tidy with none of that thumb over the top nonsense
Thanks mate. Though i wish i could believe its a nice cover! The thumb creeps up but not over when i play higher up or when i just hold onto the neck without playing. I blame this on my knuckle scraping long arms and goalkeepers hands. I have never had a compliment on my playing technique before!
its a good attempt, nice sound maybe make the notes shorter, nard seems to kill the note as soon as he plucks it (duff strings ) that way there is more of a gap, a more staccato(?) feel a good example is his playing on WHY by carly simon
This is why i am thinking he plays on really old flats. However i do love the slightly extended notes on the "freak out" bits. The yamaha's E string really sings!
what happened to the slide up to the octave © in 2nd and last verse? that adds some funk!
Concentrating on the timing!

Why did Bernard Edwards have such a difficult sense of timing? It sounds so nice on the recordings, But trying to emulate it is near impossible! All i can do is just bum note my way through it. I spend alot of time on trying to get the timing right and then i end up missing particular variations in the riffs. For example the quick octave jump at the beginning of the main line. Anyway! Enough Ranting. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg2mhoV4oZg Heres my attempt at Le Freak by Chic. I used my new to me yamaha BB5000 through my Marshall bi-amp and peavey bi-amp cab. The yamaha has active 18volt fender electronics, and a set of old heavy roundwounds (Note i only play with very very very light and bright roundwounds so this was very new to me!) Anyway, If anyone can give me some advice on emulating his technique and some opinion on the sound of the bass that will be lovely can i assume that Bernard used a set of old Flats on his MM ? - Rob.
Wow it sounds like you and this bass have been through a lot together. I know very little about it's story, you'll have to fill me with all the details some time. It would be interesting to know what was spent on it too. The routing is nice but for a luthier to do that to the trussrod... wa wa we woo! If I've got time, I might get the neck off today. If only to see what's under there. I'm curious to know what the wee bit of plastic bag sticking out the side turns out to be.
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=25655&hl= Heres some of the story, I really cant remember alot of it. I received the parts in a trade deal with Shaggy. I put about 300 into it and sold the bass on. I had to pack the neck pocket quite a bit, I heard that the guy i sold it too also rearranged the neck pocket but not sure how. I think you need to either graft on a decent peice of wood into the neck pocket, or drop the bridge into the body. Personally i would drop the bridge into the body.
Agreed the slap tone beats my SUB hands down. The finger tone is wkd too. It just sound lovely all over in fact. I have to say that whoever did the 'lectrics made a bonzer job of it, very tidy. Out of curiosity, what was the truss-rod cover made from, sticky-back-plastic? I'll be putting a wee bit of rosewood back into the cavity and tidying it up a smidge and I'll craft a new cover from wood veneer.
Myself and an electronics expert had to puzzle out the electronics as the schematic was very confusing. It took us a whole afternoon to work out which bit was the input etc, The guy who did it is named Jessie hes an amp and electronics expert, He can look at a PCB, work out exactly which bit does what and doesant even know what its for! He charged me 20 quid for the whole job, hes a real nice bloke. One of the last of a dying breed unfortunetly hes been doing it for 40 years+ The truss rod cover? Dont get me started it was waghorn guitars, a supposed luthier in bristol. He did all the routing on the bass and installation of the new truss rod. Charged me 200 quid for what frankly was not a great job. Although his wood working skills are good, his botching skills are terrible.
The fiver is my new acquisition. I mainly bought it upon the strength of the fact that it looks similar to my 4 string custom, that, and the recommendations of a few guys on here that have played it and bummed it up. I'll not say it's a disappointment as I got it for a ve-heh-heh-ry reasonable price but it is not a finished project - which is weird as the all ingredients are there. It's Barts and Schack pre-amp are very tasty indeed and the neck is sweet. I'd describe her as the Cameron Diaz of the bass world - Great body and in the right light she's gorgeous but up close and you're like "hmmm". So I'm gonna strip her and treat her to a proper seeing to Ou7shined sty-lee. The dimply, drippy varnish job, the 2mm gap and shim job in the neck socket, the *ahem* "truss-rod cover" which hides a multitude of sins and the scratchy linear blend pot are first on my list. Watch this space folks.
I think Chopthebass did the original finish, I admit i was not terrible enthused by it either! The reason of the sins underneath the truss rod cover was because the original truss rod was not man enough for the job, We had to retrofit a much stronger truss rod into her. It was managed without removing the fingerboard, But created the mess. I have to say though, One of the best sounding pre-amps i have ever owned. The bass has a great slap tone!
Don't worry Rob, having owned both basses, the SR5 is a far better bass, you'd only have played the PB for a few weks and it would have been up for sale. Would have been nice however had BCers managed to sort something. Next time eh! Chris
Ahh well, When someone told me a particular bass was supposed to be better compared to another i take it with a pinch of salt, As much as i would like to believe you, I undoubtably have a different opinion! I mean lifes not that bad, I have a 5 string thats a P-J, I have a 5 string which has a MM, But what if they put the two TOGETHER. I would still like a P5 Deluxe even if i decide to sell it, As that ebay auction proved there will be a market for it! besides, I loved the colour combo I feel guilty enough for considering the possibility of taking a BC'ers money anyway to pay for a bass. So there probably wont be a next time Thanks for the advice though man -Rob.
