1. I've replaced a lot of the parts on my MP5 so I have the originals (and some extra machine heads) for sale or trade. Pickups £20 Black scratchplate £10 Machine heads £10 Squier (I think) 4+1 machine heads £10 The Squier machine heads look much better than the MP ones, but I went with Hipshot in the end. All including UK postage, happy to consider trades.
2. I've been considering one of these for ages, I have a stingrays 5, and a modern player jazz 5 (with roscoe beck pups) and there's things I like about both of them, but neither is exactly what I want. The best things about both of them seem to be almagated in the TM5, but I've never tried one. Has anyone tried one, or even better has anyone compared one to a stingray? I know the best thing would be to try one, but I don't know of any in Edinburgh, so I need to decide if it's worth the trip to somewhere that has one to try. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
3. The same as my rig, best rig I've used, and at an amazing price. Surprised this hasn't been snapped up.
4. I wish I had the money for this, hopefully something as nice as this shows up after my Christmas party residency (just work parties not the royal Albert hall). GLWTS
5. I bought this for my girlfriend, she wanted a mustang but it's her first bass. I've put in a Seymour Duncan 50s precision style pickup and CTS pots and it sounds and plays lovely. Sarah is getting a my little pony decal made for it......I'm planning nicer machine heads, we have different approaches to modifying......
6. My G&L L5500, it's always been a great player, but the original EMGs just didn't suit me. The Seymour Duncan's are great, wired up VVT, with series/parallel switches on the volumes, and the tone has a single coil switch. I think I will go for a 2 band preamp at some stage, but really happy with it just now.
7. Thanks for that. I really like them
8.
Look at the sold prices on Basschat, on eBay, on Gumtree, etc.
Same here, ebays "sold listings" option is great. Why do so many basschatters delete all the info from their sale thread when it's gone, I think the threads are invaluable when deciding on a fair price for buyers and sellers.
9. When I'm writing a bass line for someone else's song I tend to make a recording of the basic guitar vocals arrangement then listen to it over and over until I'm singing the Bass line in my head. I definitely don't like to use my hand muscle memory or my knowledge of scales write a line for me, they would quickly all start sounding the same. Sometimes I hear a song once and I already have a good idea of what will work, other times it can take ages to be really happy. I tend to find the line will evolve quickly the first few times I play it, but often will keep changing slightly for quite a while, which is why I prefer to gig a song a few times before recording it. When you've written the line you need to be comfortable with it, and open to changing it depending on what other musicians are going to be playing on it. Your line might be amazing, but it may sound awful with the piano player, or drummers ideas, this is when the theory and musical knowledge can be really handy.
10. I met Rosco at Glasgow to buy a Gallien Krueger 2x10 combo, it's a kick-back amp with wheels so it felt like bringing luggage back on to the train to Edinburgh. I sent a long message saying I'm short with a beard wearing a shirt etc, he just said "I'll be the one with a bass amp".
11.
Stunning. *cough* tort guard *cough*
Agreed
12. I bought this for my partner, but replaced the electronics (mostly because I had all the bits already) it's a great little bass, I use it a lot for messing about at home. 13. I tried one when shopping for a short scale for my partner, she bought the Squier Bronco because it looks better, but I think I'd have gone for the Gretsch if it was my decision. It is a lot of bass for the money.
14. I put new pots and pickup into my partners affinity bronco bass, the only thing to watch out for is check the space available in the control cavity. I ordered some cts pots and they were too wide for the cavity. I had to do a little routing, but it was worth it.
15. I've always fancied an ATK, I will get one at some stage, but I wouldn't sell my main bass to fund it.
16. Not a huge fan anymore, but flea is one of the reasons I started playing bass, and Blood Sugar Sex Magic is one of my all time favourite albums. I'll definitely be picking this up.
17. Any updates?
18. I'm working on this just now, I'm thinking preamp with normal (on/on/on) switches for parallel/series/single coil, though I may well look at sorting the pickups too. I fell for the neck on this bass, and the body seems decent quality so I think it'll be worth upgrading.
19. It's going to be a bit of work, but should be reversable and if you want to do it then you should. If we all did the sensible thing all the time the world would be a boring place.
20. Really great bass, probably one to keep even if you get a more expensive one later. Can any one tell me though, is it pronounced west-tone or west-one?
21. I'm also typing on a used iPad 2, there's a few in the sell anything section at the moment.
22.
I'd suggest ignoring any legal and/or financial aspect, and simply wish them luck in their new ventures, playing the 'magnanimity' card, but that's just me. I couldn't be bothered with hassles for even a modest return, let alone a small one. I understand the notion of 'principle', but wouldn't whip myself (hard...) over such matters. Move on, whistling..?
+1 Though, I would ask to be listed as player on the album sleeve. It might be useful for your C.V. at some point. I keep a copy of everything I've played on, it gives you a portfolio of work to show to potential employers or collaborators.
