Not on bass, but maybe still relevant: - depping in all kinds of music, and on different instruments - teaching - steady money but it takes a lot of time away from playing, so it's a mixed bag - depping in all kinds of music, and on different instruments - playing in church every sunday plus weddings and funerals - depping some more None of those would give an income alone, but together they made me survive. Never made income type money playing with a band or playing my own music, and all proceeds from radio and tv were regarded as accidental extras that would get me an LP or two. best, bert

There's this rather firm (probably neoprene "rubber") foam that comes with glue on one side, and in different thicknesses. I don't know the brand name, and don't know how easy it is to get hold of, but PM me if you want to find a source for it. I know someone in Coylton (between Ayr and Cumnock) who probably has it, or I could send you a piece of it. best, bert

Bear in mind there are lots of (anti-)nodes, and during the vibrating of the string, different ones of them will be "active" / "not active" - especially during the attack phases, but not only then. As a result of this, I can't escape the feeling that some of the discussion above is missing what the alleged sweet spot is about, and is discussing with straw men. Originally, IIRC, it was never said that there's only one sweet spot, but it was said that they found a spot that served a certain purpose very well, and why it did that. If I find the article I have on it, I'll report exactly what was claimed. b, b

Seriously though, this plan might just turn out to put an undue pressure on your studies. My background is that I studied composition for many years, and from that experience, my take would be: I'd contemplate very much about what learning you can draw from each song on its own. This is the essential bit, as I think now is not the time to dream about masterpieces, but to write stuff that fits your developing as a composer. IME this developing is best served not by few elaborate works but by [b]very varied, short and effective pieces[/b] that are set up and planned for exactly to help in that regard. Your life and your choice of course, but I've been there, dreaming about my opera masterpiece when I was 19. At any rate: good luck with whatever you choose! best, bert

Whilst there may be zillions of rather sweet or extremely sweet spots, as well as light spots and diet spots, the chosen one was chosen as a good compromise for the overall sound. Also keep in mind that fretting a string does not change the formant, present even on electrical instruments. The explanation that followed in the press releases showed that they knew exactly what they were talking about. Now, the actual value of that exact sweet spot as opposed to others, or indeed its importance altogether, is a different matter. But they were never unaware of strings being fretted and string knots moving as a result. Of course they were aware. It's basic knowledge. best, bert

Nope. Maybe when I get very old, but not whilst I'm averagely old. Though the idea of "one bass only" does charm me, I can't imagine having only one as long as I can survive economically with [s]several[/s] lots of them. Edit: However, I can imagine slimming down the collection. Say that I find I can't do sixers, fivers or fretlesses. Then they will have to go. In the unlikely case I can do everything on my fretless sixer, and never feel the need or wish to play any other bass, then I might consider owning only one. It's never gonna happen though. My main concern right now is whether we can bring all our gear into the nursing home and whether we'll be allowed to do prog, jazz and classical, or must comply to the majority wish of two- and three-chord music - - preferably slow and sleep inducing. best, bert

Don't mind telling, but I'm afraid it will not be too interesting, as there is little plan in it as of yet. Most gear was bought when a sudden possibility appeared, like a half price offer or a used one. Also, some of it was bought purely to get a friend started, so there's even less plan there.
