Dealing with feedback with an uncompromising drummer
Mudpup replied to geoham's topic in General Discussion
Plan B would be stop playing the smaller pubs. That's what we did. Same issue with the drummer - big hitter and a loud kit. He tried playing with rods but it really didn't work for any of us. Robbed the power out of the band and drummer was grumpy about it. He also had a smaller kit but liked using the big stuff. I suppose it's like asking you to play through a 50 watt combo and below talking volume for him. -

Nope, it's the same size as the kit. You lose the gap under the cymbals but what do you use that for anyway? -

Get a drum screen. We use one and it works really well. Or a new drummer of course 😁 -
And one of the original UK Playboy bunny girls too

I used to work with Chas's daughter Juliet many years ago and she became the keyboard player in my band at the time. We rehearsed at the barn/studio in the garden of their farmhouse in Essex most weeks. Every now and again we would get kicked out so Chas and Dave could do some recording in there. They would randomly turn up with a crate of brandy and loads of cigars, boot us out and stay in there for days at a time putting tracks down. And another memory was sitting in the cottage after rehearsals at 1am with Chas's wife bringing tea and toast out, everyone having a bash on the old piano and a 60's PBass leaned up in the inglenook fireplace! Just the warmest and kindest people you could possibly meet. Juliet is playing keyboards with Eddie Tenpole at the moment...

Did they con you into the backstage poker game afterwards?

Here you go..... I have to give priority firstly to anyone that takes the whole lot, secondly to anyone that takes all of the lights or all of the audio and finally to people wanting just the odd piece and a dibs list will be kept. We finish up on Dec 7th so everything will be available to take from Sunday Dec 8th. Location is our storage near Esher or we can leave bits around Essex for people to collect if preferable. Or come to the last gig on the 7th in Southend and take anything you like away with you..... Yellowhouse PA and Lighting prices

I'll still be loitering around on here I expect. But my main motivation was always the gigging and I definitely need a break from that for at least 6 months or so. The guys did appreciate the extra value I gave but just saying thanks isn't enough - they needed to step up and actively help out and take some weight off me and they didn't. One of the guys was on sick leave from gigging due to a hernia between between about July 2023 and March this year. He didn't do a single thing behind the scenes - didn't approach a single venue for a gig, learn any new material or even view some recent gig videos and see where he could improve anything. It was all stuff that could be done at home easily. That doesn't cut the mustard for me. I'm going to keep most of my gear for now (just in case) and I'll probably use my time learning a 5 string - i've tried before but couldn't get my head round it because of the weekly gigs on a 4 string so maybe now is a good time to give it another go.

A weird one last night in Blackwater, Surrey. Gig number 1 of a final 6 gig run in to folding the band up. I decided a few months back to pack the band in - a combination of getting fed up with hauling tons of gear around every weekend, a dodgy back causing me days of discomfort after every gig, not getting any help with the backroom side of the band (booking gigs and social media stuff) and a few niggling personal gripes within the band that weren't really fixable were the primary reasons behind the decision. It's been a blast for 15 years but it was getting to be the same old gigs/people/songs and I want my weekends back to do some travelling and other things before I get too old and health issues start biting. I told the guys and offered to help source a new bass player with them but they decided that A - I was too talented and good looking to replace or B - they couldn't be arsed with the whole breaking a new boy in thing so they decided to do a few gigs at our fave venues and then call it a day in December. So we played in Surrey and had people from Margate and even France travelled over to say farewell with us. Humbled is the word.... We played really well even after an 8 week break due to summer hols and my Dad dying, the crowd were amazing and a couple of songs in I was beginning to wonder if i had made a poor decision. Then I did the pack up afterwards for an hour and a bit, did the long drive round the M25 home to Essex and realised I couldn't really face much more of that. So I guess I'll have 5 more gig reports to post and then thats me done. That's All Folks!!!

We will be selling off all our PA and lighting after the final gig in December. If anyone would like to buy any or all of it we are open to offers on each item It would be properly useful for either A - upsetting your neighbours, B - turning your front room into a replica of the Punk Floyd gig at Wembley Stadium in 1997 or C - if you're in a band topping up your stage show with some noisy/blinky things. Off the top of my head here's some of the PA we have... Peavey XR1220 powered mixing desk Peavey passive 12" speakers Mackie sub with replacement board (the bit that always blows up on them) Active floor monitor with cover (I'll add the brand/model when Simon wakes up and tells me what it is) Boatloads of PA cables to suit in various cases And the lighting is as below... American DJ Quad Sweeper beams DMX/remote x 2 (big swivelly things at the back of the stage) American DJ V Bar Pak DMX (LED uplighters that we use front of stage) American DJ V Par Pak DMX (LED drum kit uplighters) Chauvet Intimidator Spot Duo DMX x 2 (LED swivelly beam things on the floor rear stage) Beamz F900 Hazer with remote and spare fluid Lasers DMX x 3 various brands Eurolite Bigfoot DMX Move programmable floor controller Loads of DMX cables to suit Lots of speaker/lighting stands in bags/cases A backdrop stand Everything fits comfortably in the boot of a 1993 Ford Escort Estate car Have a look at our pics and videos on Facebook, You Tube or Lemonrock at Yellowhouse UK to see what it all looks like or maybe even come to the last gigs and have a chat about it. Or drop a message over of course

Having been through bloody loads of amps over the last 15 years I've ended up with these ones below. My main criteria is that they must work in a band context with a hairy arsed drum basher, have plenty of slam and I can carry them. In order of preference Mesa Big Block BB750 - just a brilliant valvey big rock amp. Sustain and heft for days. Straightforward EQ too. Quite rare though. Orange 4 Stroke - Half the weight of the Mesa and has similar grunt. Massively flexible EQ but sounds great pretty much flat. Onboard comp really fattens it up without losing dynamics. Even more rare than the Mesa. Quilter Bass Block BB800 - the only class D amp that I've found that doesn't get squeezy and shouty when you push the volume. Great EQ when you know how to use it and a great power amp to run a preamp pedal through.

The USA Sterling has ceramic pickups, a smaller body and some different switching options as well as a jazz neck. It doesn't sound exactly like a Stingray but it's very close. You could also look for a Sterling SB14 which is a cheaper version of the USA one - there was a black one in the classifieds recently. I've had both the USA Sterling and the SB14 and there's barely anything beteween them sound wise. You just dont get the oiled neck on the SB14. If you can find a Stingray SLO thats the one with a jazz neck on a 'proper' Stingray. As Kiwi said above they're super scarce though....

Popular contemporary funk for The Dog and Duck.
Mudpup replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
None of that matters down the Dog and Duck And I'm glad I don't have your ears 😉😊 -
The brands would rather sell you two pedals than one....

I don't quite understand why they've straight chamfered the edges either. It immediately looked odd to me. It can't be as comfortable as a curve and any dings on there will really show

I've had some very posh basses over the years and the Cort is better than all of them. And not even 'for the money's. It's brilliant

Another morning after the night before post for you My mob Yellowhouse played the Essex Riviera with a dep singer. She's done a couple of gigs with us over the last few months with us and it's getting better each time. I think this is the best bit of video I've ever seen of my lot. The sound is great and the vocals are immense. It's an old Skunk Anansie song which I've always wanted to play and Susie blows the doors off here.... (Cort A4, Orange 4 Stroke, Laney Digbeth pre on the tube setting and a couple of Barefaced Big Baby cabs for the geeks)

You can adjust the brightness on the fly with one of the pedals if you want to.

Just received a pedal from Nigel. Fast delivery, well packed and a totally stress free transaction. 🙂

Yep, I have one and it's an excellent bit of kit. But I was expecting a shop that had some very high end and expensive basses in stock would have something better than a front room combo to play them through. I bet the guitarists don't get such a rough deal in there ....
