I once saw Dave Mattacks enter the stage, introduce himself to the other members of Lesley Duncan’s band (handing them his business card), sit down and play a flawless set. An absolute god among drummers!

My career has been a doughnut with a kids and family-shaped hole in the middle. So I feel like a car that’s been garaged… less miles on the clock than you’d guess by looking at me. Hopefully the end of the Road isn’t yet in sight. Though wIth the passing of @yorks5string and @bumnote I am running out of role models…

A lot of our legends are winding down their careers with one-man or similar shows. Two have come to my attention lately - Francis Rossi, and Dionne Warwick. I gave Rossi a miss, but a mate went and rather daringly opted for the front-row Meet and Greet option (£100). Your phone gets taken away and a pic is taken with it by a minion, while the star will sign things during your brief Hello (no pun intended, Quo fans…). The show is part storytelling, part acoustic performance with Quo’s guitar tech. Must be a lot cheaper than carting all those Marshalls around… Dionne last night was daylight robbery. Half of the two hours (plus break) was spent watching excepts on a big screen from a TV documentary available on iPlayer, while her son fawned over her with glib questions (and even asked one twice). We got five songs, all delivered from the couch (poor dear had a bad back). Just glad I had a £45 cheap seat…Gladys Knight last year was miles better! Moral of the story - check the reviews before you help replenish your idol’s pension fund. EDIT Now this fella could do a one man show…

Annual Otis Jay Blues Band show at the local Forest Arts Centre, New Milton. Sold 100/130 tickets for a three-band bill - all good clean fun and a joining-in audience to boot. Great to have pro sound and lights. Sandberg VM4, GK MB200 through Barefaced Two10, DI’d of course.

Love the way they play and move on up the road. It was in New Orleans I realised the purpose of the bass solo in the penultimate song. It’s to let the guitarist pass round the bar with the tip jar😂 Now, back on topic…

Provisional Otis Jay Blues Band line-up for a gig on 1st May at Forest Arts Centre, New Milton. All very welcome! We sold out last year, so 🤞 Singer and harmonica player are on loan, but like Marcus Rashford are playing up a storm.🎤🎺 It will be this lineup’s second and last gig. There are three Dave’s, and my second name is David. On 2nd May, the remaining trio will be going forward with… shock horrow … a girl singer. Watch this space!
