  14. I've played quite a few used stingrays and found them to be on the whole very consistent machines through the 80's to the mid 90's. I tried a used SR5 at the Gallery and found the classic stingray growl albeit slightly less thick than on the 4 string model. I also tried a new HH SR5 in another visit and wasn't impressed at all, particularly with how gutless the neck pickup was. I also found on the SR HS models there were problems with noise interference in some coil settings. So I don't know what to make of that really. I hope they aren't cutting corners in QC and design.

  16. I think my gear is about OK for me. I have just enough instruments and no more, the stuff is good sounding brands that will sell on easily and (apart from the Shuker) none of it is particularly flashy in appearance. I have more amps than I need, for sure but there's an [i]intended[/i] use for all of them bar one perhaps. I was out of my depth with a Ken Smith BSR6GN that I bought in 2004 but now I have the Shuker 6, I feel less out of my depth than back then so I dunno...its all stuff I can grow into maybe? At the moment I have quite a bit of MIDI gear to learn how to use and that's keeping me gainfully occupied. It took me 6 months to learn how to use my Lexicon MPXG2 so I'm anticipating years for some of this kit...and I have a bit of re-learning with Pro Tools as well now.

By isolating the cab from the hollow stage, you can control the lows a lot better with the benefit that your sound can have more focus. Also, if your cab is rear ported then by putting it up against a wall, it also helps reduce boom.

Our sound engineer tended to cane the low frequencies quite a bit, at least until the subs overheated and failed a few times.

  21. Might be worth considering a Fender Bassman head, especially if you can pair it with a sensitive cab. They're quite smooth sounding. Alternatively you could go for an Ampeg B15R Portaflex fliptop reissue. Very different to SVT heads and Jamerson used to play through one.
  22. The laser lens probably needs recalibrating, did you get it looked at by a tech at all? It would be an easy fix.

  25. That rig is extremely tasty but utterly insane I like it a lot! The drill is a nice nod to Paul Gilbert too. Wouldn't want to be your roadie though. Have you not been tempted by some of the Line 6 modelling stuff then?
