1.
the gap between the top of the last fret and the string is around 3mm.
And the gap around the 12th fret? Problem with the cutlass necks was that the phenolic resin on the fingerboard wasn't stiff enough to resist string tension. All 5 I've either owned or played so far have had the same issue. I've never found one that wasn't from 1983 or 84 either.
BTW is that 600 number you mentioned an official figure for how many Cutlasses were made? I always wondered how many there were out there...
Yes, an estimate for Cutlass 1 basses. There were 300 Cutlass II's made.
 2. I believe either a GK3 or piezo bridge can send a signal to the hexpander (which is essentially a filter that combs out all the frequencies likely to affect tracking). MIDI is just used as a term of convenience, its not intended to suggest MIDI code is being created by the pickup. Thats the job of the Axon AX100, read it as piezo-MIDI if you prefer.
 3.
Kiwi i have your ex cuttlass one
Awesome! Nice to know its gone to a good home Pierre.
Years ago I remember talking to a guy from Strings & Things - UK distributor for MM gear - and he told me that 12 Cutlasses were only ever imported to the UK.
New? I can believe that. But if it's out of a total of 600 made, I'm sure there must have been secondhand imports as well.
Mine's black and it's a 1983 model - so not strung through the body and with a 4-bolt neck.
Can you achieve low action on it? That is, action low enough where you can't slide a 1 quid coin between the frets and the strings without making contact?
 4.
Be wary. They grew up in a different age.
I wondered why they were wearing matching dog collars and eye liner.
 5. I got an offer from an elderly couple.
 6.
What you need to do is stand up on a desk or table in public, pull the front of your T-shirt up over your head, put your elbows up & put your thumbs under your oxters & then ping your nipples whilst shouting "Bring the Milk".
I tried that already but couldn't see myself in the shop windows properly.
 7. gosh, thats tasty...

Always interesting to note the use of labels by wood suppliers to describe otherwise fairly non-descript woods! Basswood is known as lime to horticulturalists...agathis is fijian kauri - grown in massive plantations across Asia...
 9. Gosh that's purdee...
 10. I've played it, sounds fab. The mahogany body gives it a soft, chocolatey growl - a hip-hop/neo soul/gospel players dream.
 11. They're treated as two completely separate systems. The sustainer is just part of the magnetic pickup system which feeds into one channel of the Hexpander while the piezo/MIDI signal feeds into the other. Because the sustainer affects the string directly, it's picked up by the piezo/MIDI pickups as well. The hexpander allows you to select between and across MIDI, magnetic and piezo feeds.
 12. On a sustainer equipped instrument: Roland GK3/piezo bridge -> Graphtec Ghost Hexpander MIDI pre -> Axon AX100 -> Synth module
 13. I have one in my Klein copy. Amazing bit of gear - would love to hook it up to a MIDI interface...
 14. Love the sound of Class D amps. The Shuttle/EBS and Peavey rack/EBS rigs work so well. Love my Burmans too...and they work with EBS. Trace is OK but a bit of a one trick pony. Only improvement I would make is wedge speaker cabs - a project in the pipeline once I get my workshop set up.
 15.
I don't have any to hand unfortunately. Would I be correct in assuming that I'd need to unbolt the neck from the body to access these marker numbers?
Yes, that's correct.
 16. I've owned three, a Cutlass 1, a Cutlass II and a Cutlass 1 ex Cliff Williams with thru body string anchoring and three bolt neck. Have yet to find one capable of supplying low action but I live in hope... ...do you have any pics of the marker numbers written on the heel of the neck on your instrument?
 17. This is really interesting. How are you calculating paths? I've played around a little with this as well...free CAD software http://www.emachineshop.com/

 19.
Perhaps they're more profitable than the core business?
Perhaps a lot of things.
 20. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little bit envious...
 21. My concerns are: 1) Have they over extended themselves and remained overextended inspite of the recession? 2) Why are they floating shares rather than selling off subsidiaries like SWR? I've seen share float used to raise revenue shortly before owner/directors retire...

 23. Sure, basically I felt the barts in the Pentabuzz tended to stifle both the singing character and the upper mids (the thup sound as your fingers release a string). So I did a bit of research and decided on Alembic Aviators and pretty much paid through the nose for them. In hindsight, I would have gone custom instead because you could probably mount any flat response PJ set and get the same results. The East pre has been on a few of my instruments. It's a clear sweet sounding preamp which doesn't sound too brittle. Nice combo with the Pentabuzz and it gives me that all important control over the mids. On stage with the GK RB700 1x15 combo I used to have, I could get a gentle feedback going with the mids and it was like playing with a sustainer. Just a gorgeous sound...the aural equivalent of having warm chocolate dripped into each ear hole. Does your Hexabuzz have soap bars? I remember Shockwave looking into getting replacement soapbars for his Pentabuzz. Andy at Wizard said he thought they were too narrow to produce a decent sensing field so couldn't build them to be a direct replacement. Might be something worth thinking about if you look into replacements. Just check yours are made for a 6 string and not a 5.
 24. Mr Mani appears silent.
 25.
Always wanted to play this, cant understand why more covers bands dont do it, could even become the new Alright Now.
Taking a look at the bass player in that vid...I'm very worried for you.
