I'm looking to switch the nuts on my 2 Matt Freeman Precisions but there is lacquer over the ends of the nut. What's the best way to get them out without damaging the finish on the neck?

Squier Precision - Matt Freeman model. Incredible.
Ive had my CV Jazz since they were released and ive had issue with it (or the neck in general) at all. Probably done 200+ gigs with it.
I'm sure they're fine (in fact I've heard a lot of people say they're pretty good), but they look like they're made from that stuff that dentists use for temporary fillings. -
Mine needed nothing but a slight turn of the truss rod. I did bring the saddles down a bit too as I wanted a bit more "snap", but it was pretty good as it was. Fretwork is good, the nut is not great but was cut well and would last a while...
What are the nuts on the CV Squiers about? Squier says they're "synthetic bone" and they work fine, but they look like they could started crumbling to pieces at any minute. They don't inspire confidence to look at but they function well, I've not (yet) had a problem with them. -
Squier Precision - Matt Freeman model. Incredible.

I've mentioned this several times before but another time won't hurt; I've got both Matt Freeman Precisions. I picked up the black one at the end of November last year for £175 "used". It still had the plastic on the scratchplate, and came with a Fender gig bag that I've since found out cost about £50. Everything about that bass is immaculate, and I love the sound. I used it as my band bass for a few months until I got a vintage white one in April. It cost a bit more but came with a Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounder that I removed and sold so the net cost was £240 (inc shipping!) It has a few dings and scuffs, and the neck pocket isn't quite as tidy as the black one (there's a slight gap on either side - a fag papers' width) but I'm happier to use it as I'm a bit less precious about it. The white one feels a lot heavier than the black one. The necks on these are great. Took me a few days to get used to it as I'd been playing a P Bass with a Jazz-width neck but it's very comfortable to me now; wide and shallow to my hand. The pickups are really aggressive which suits me as I play in a hardcore band. We've not gigged yet but we've had a few people come in to listen to us as we practice and they all comment on how good the bass sounds. Both basses are totally stock and I've no inclination to mod anything. A lot of people talk about how good the top-end Squiers are for modding but as far as I'm concerned they're perfect as they are. In an ideal world I'd like to do a CV/MF hybrid, with the Freeman neck and pickup on a Fiesta Red or Sonic Blue CV body to add to my arsenal but with the two I've got I don't feel I need anything else. My Peavey has barely been touched in the last 6 months and I'm tempted to flog it as it's totally surplus now. As the thread title says - incredible! -
argh! I can't believe this... I bought one THREE DAYS AGO after looking here for a little while with no luck! I went for the white one... but I liked both and either would have done! good luck with the sale!
I have both! These are excellent basses and the pickups are great; my white one came with a Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounder but I put the original one back in. They're both completely stock now, I've no desire to change anything about them.

I love Shell Pink, but I'd also echo the comments above and say that the tort scratchplate doesn't go with the colour combo. My general rule is that tort can go with pretty much any colour but only goes with rosewood fretboards.
I don't see a problem with it. I don't change strings every time I want to tinker with a bass - would make it an even more expensive hobby, and throwing out perfectly good strings is just a waste.
Agreed. Replacing the strings every time you took them off has never occurred to me; to my mind it's common sense to put the same strings back on unless there's something wrong with them. I'm happy to string leave the same strings on a bass for years at a time. I should probably buy flats.

Both my Precisions are Squiers, and both are stock. The build quality is excellent, and I love the tone but the Matt Freeman has a custom wound pickup so I don't know how it compares to the CV or VM Squiers. I've owned plenty of basses over the years and done countless mods to most of them, but straight off the bat these are the nicest playing and nicest sounding basses I've had.

That's beautiful! I was never a fan of LPB until recently, now I have a Strat in that colour. Happy NBD!

I'm happy with my two Precisions. I've got one tuned to standard and one tuned to C# for my band. The build quality is excellent and I love the tone; my white one came with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder fitted but I took it out and fitted the original one so they're completely stock. They're as good as the U.S. Standard P that I had a few years back so I don't feel like I need to upgrade at all. I have a Peavey Foundation as well but I seldom use it as everything is covered by my Precisions and I don't need a bass with two pickups. I really should get round to selling it, I wouldn't miss it if it was gone.
I really want a Squier Matt Freeman in Vintage White to go with my black one. I have pretty average goals in life.
I got the white Matt Freeman, now I want a CV 60s Precision.

I had the scratchplate off one of my Squiers at the weekend and noticed that it had mini pots instead of the full sized ones. I presume it's the same on both of them and probably my CV Strat as well as I've read that a number of people replaced the pots and wiring on their CVs almost straight away. I find that they function just as well as full sized pots and haven't had any problems with any of my Squiers, so why do they have a bad rep? Are they unreliable or have a shorter lifespan? And furthermore, what's the point of them? Are they significantly cheaper to buy/manufacture? The routing on my P is standard so I guess it's not to save space.

Shell pink.

I've never had to deal with crackly pots until recently; all three pots on my Peavey crackle when I turn them. Having never cleaned pots before, what do I do? Do I have to take the pots out and spray them from the front?

Posted this in the Gear Porn section earlier but thought I'd chuck it in here as well too - my pair of Matt Freeman Precisions. The white one is tuned to C# for band use and came with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder, although I'll be putting the original pickup back in when it arrives. The white one has a couple of gaps in the neck pocket which is a shame considering the black one is flawless. They're both excellent players, absolutely zero GAS for me right now.

My pair of Matt Freemans. The white one is strung with the bottom 4 strings from a 5 string set and tuned to C#, and came with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder fitted, but I'm going to put the original one back in as I love the tone.

Precison Pickup Recommendation for 70s type sounds
Jono Bolton replied to Lozz196's topic in Accessories and Misc
Have you listened to the Squier Matt Freeman Precision? The pickup is custom wound to replicate his 70s P Bass pickup. My bandmates love the sound of it, I haven't found anything about the bass to change and I've just bought another Matt Freeman with an SPB-3 that I'll be swapping out for the original pickup as soon as I get it. -
Best string gauge for whole step down tuning DGCF
Jono Bolton replied to bisonkills's topic in Accessories and Misc
This seems to be an old thread, but I'll chip in anyway. I (believe I) have DR Fat Beams on my P Bass for tuning a semitone lower than you and they're great. I've had them for years and they still sound excellent. I had a set of custom Newtone Drop Tune strings on before I chucked on the old DRs and they were sh*te; didn't do the job at all and flapped about all over the place. -
Reliced 60th Anniversary Precision USA, Surely Not!!!
Jono Bolton replied to thebrig's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The annoying thing for me is, I am actually searching for a 60th Anniversary Precision which is how I came across it, and I would have gone for it had it not been trashed!!!
There's one on here isn't there?
